Welcome to Thursday Doors! This is a weekly challenge for people who love doors and architecture to come together to admire and share their favorite door photos, drawings, or other images or stories from around the world. If you’d like to join us, simply create your own Thursday Doors post each (or any) week and then share a link to your post in the comments below, anytime between 12:01 am Thursday morning and Saturday noon (North American eastern time). If you like, you can add our badge to your post.

in primo piano – photos

Last Friday, our daughter and made our annual visit to Old Sturbridge Villiage (OSV), an 1830s recreation setting, for their Christmas by Candlelight event. Part of that event is a holiday gingerbread contest, and if we visit OSV before the day we feature holiday doors, I use these whimsical doors for my post.

I’m not sure how many people are featuring holiday doors — we have a light touch on rules — but that was the suggested theme. In any case, be sure to follow the links listed in the comments to see a nice collection of doors from around the world. If you can’t make it today, check back on Sunday for the weekly recap.

I will be out most of the day today, but I will visit all your posts before the challenge ends on Saturday.

If you are in a hurry and don’t wish to scroll through the comments, click to Jump to the comment form.

  2. I had no idea today was a holiday door theme or else I would’ve done that. Nevertheless, since I have a newly renovated church in the post I think that should somehow blend with the holiday theme. It sounds funny but this church was going to be among the first church posts on my blog, but now ended up being among the few last ones in Mumbai category. However, I’m glad that we went and covered it and its finally up on my blog. Here’s the link for those who want to enjoy the tour: https://travelindiadestinations.com/afghan-church-mumbai/

    1. I think your post is perfect for this season, Sharukh. It’s a lovely church, established for a noble purpose and restored so it will stand for more hundreds of years. Your photos are delightful. Thank you for joining us this week.

    1. I didn’t think of it, but that could be Rapunzel’s tower. There always seems to be one entry where the builder wanted to reach for the skies. I do enjoy seeing them all.

Your photo today is quite appropriate for the season. Even though I know it isn’t a seasonal doors, it has quite a festive look to it.

  4. I always look forward to your Christmas posts. This selection of gingerbread houses is delightful, each one a winner. I am fascinated by the British influence… Stone Henge and Dr Who’s tardis.

Not playing by the rules this week, but completing my selection from Exeter: http://scooj.org/2024/12/12/thursday-doors-12-december-2024-exeter-doors/#Exeter#Devon#UK

    1. Well, Old Sturbridge Village is in the heart of New England ;-) I was surprised to see Stone Henge, but accurate and good use of a bag of candy.

I think you saved the best of Exeter for last, I had a hard time picking a favorite this week at your place.

  9. Dan, I always look forward to the OSV Gingerbread Creations. This year is no disappointment! It seems impossible, but every year these talented artists get more and more creative.

I love the Shredded Wheat roof and the Police Box.

I wouldn’t want to be judging in this contest. They’re all winners.

Thanks for this. Stay warm and have a good day.

    1. I love the materials they chose. The chocolate flooring is new to me, but I approve. I always look for the use of shredded wheat – so much better to build with it than to try and eat it.

  18. I’m always amazed by what people choose to build for the holidays. The police box and Stonehenge took me by surprise. The dwarf thingy with cats on the outside was a head scratcher too. Thanks for these, Dan. Always fun to see.

I looked at the first and second photos and then went to Google–of course. It looks like a Cat Front End Loader plowing through the dwarfs’ front door. Even used, those Cat things are not cheap. Obviously, Snow White is redecorating. 😂

  23. I love Old Sturbridge, and the gingerbread houses are masterful! In our area, the Prescott Conference Center claims their Gingerbread Village is the “largest in the world”. I don’t know how they determined that, but it is a dramatic display of gingerbread houses/hotels/farms/etc. Locals contribute and win prizes. It’s fun to attend — but it’s not Old Sturbridge. ❄️🎄❄️

    1. Thanks Gwen. I can only imagine what the result would be if all these people were working together on a village. I love seeing the entries, especially the ones by the children. The roof with the shredded wheat made me smile…so creative. I too like the blue lighthouse, it looks like something out of a fairytale.

Great share, I really enjoy gingerbread houses and the whole sense of fun that they add to the season. Much appreciated.

    1. Thanks Suzette. It’s always a challenge to get the pictures because they are people moving around and the entries are in close proximity to each other. They had a lot of entries this yea. I did a lot of cropping and turning, so the photos look better than they should. Stonehenge was curious at first, but I like it.
