The holidays are over. I suppose that means it’s safe for David and I to stay home, but what fun would that be? We’re continuing our tradition of checking out the bar each Saturday, tracking inflation through the cost of adult beverages. Interestingly enough, bourbon and beer prices haven’t changed much since last year. Oh well, here we sit – eat – drink and work Linda’s prompt.

SoCS by Linda G. Hill

If we were having a beer, you’d be wondering about something.

“I saw your blog earlier, Dan. I guess you took that foggy flag photo early in the week.”

“Because it’s at full staff?”

“Yes.”

“I did, but I liked the fog, but I felt it was appropriate to show the one at half-staff, especially given the connection to my books.”

“Your books? What connection?”

“One of my characters has a name connection with Jimmy Carter.”

“Billy? It’s Billy, isn’t it? You named him after Carter’s brother – Billy, of Billy Beer fame.”

“Billy Beer? Is that what you guys are hoping to drink today?”

“No, Cheryl. A John Howell’s Bourbon Special and a Modelo will do nicely. Dan was just telling me about his character connection to Jimmy Carter.”

“Billy? Are you kidding me?”

“No, not Bily!”

“Then who?”

“Carter.”

“Oh, the guy at O’Malley’s. I get it. I figured he just had the same last name.”

“Actually, his name is James Traub.”

“Huh?”

“He used to go by Jimmy. He was in the Marines when Carter was President. Some guys started calling him Carter as a way of teasing him, but he liked it, so he let it stick.”

“Here you go boys. Did I hear you mention pizza?”

“Yeah, Cheryl. Give us a few minutes and then put an order in for a large meat lovers.”

“I’ll put it in now. The party in the lounge ordered twelve pies. It’s gonna be a while.”

“Dan, I think you have some explaining to do.”

“Why? What?”

“I’ve read your books. You never mentioned ‘Carter’ being a nickname. You said he was in the Marines, but nothing about his name.”

“You’re right, David. I forgot. That fact is revealed in the next book.”

“Another Rascal Todd Mystery?”

“Yes, but light on Rascal Todd — she’s not the main sleuth.”

“She’s in the book though…right? And Bonkers? Bonkers is in the book…right?”

“Yes, Rascal’s in the book, just kinda-sorta in the background.”

“And Bonkers?”

“Yes, Bonkers is in the book.”

“What’s the name of this book?”

“Right now, it’s Book Six After Box Mess.”

“I hope you’re going to work on that.”

“I am.”

“Why is ‘After Box Mess’ important, anyway?”

“In front of the catastrophe when my Cloud storage with Box went kerflooey, this was called Book Six. I started putting backup copies all over the place. Once the mess with Box was behind me, I actually lost track of which one was the most recent for a few days.”

“But you got that sorted out?”

“I did. When I found the most recent copy, I added the ‘Box Mess’ to the name and moved it to OneDrive.”

“One Drive? That’s also in the Cloud. Why not just keep it on your computer? You know, like we did in the old days.”

“I work off of two laptops. Having things in the Cloud means I always have access to the current version.”

“Until you don’t.”

“Precisely, until I don’t.”

“Did you lose track of your other books?”

“None of them had any edits after Box when on the fritz, but in moving the files to a safe place, they all ended up with the same creation date.”

“That doesn’t sound good.”

“Well, they all had slightly different version names, and I know which one I uploaded to Amazon, so it still works.”

“Do you ever think that all this technology is bringing along too much baggage?”

“It does create a few new adventures, David.”

“Adventures are things we choose, Dan. This is like having a pop-quiz in math class.”

“I usually did pretty well on those.”

“Yeah, well you’re weird.”

“Hey guys. Your pizza’s almost ready. Another round?”

“Of course!”

  1. I have a hybrid Grevillea called Billy Bonkers 😁

    1. Looks like you covered all the bases with that one. Although, I’m sure your name was here first.

      1. Probably, I’ve had the Grevillea for around 5 years

    1. Birds and squirrels get a long pretty well in our yard, Dave. If we haven’t put food out for a while, the Blue Jays squawk about it.

    1. Apparently. I guess Easter Candy will go on sale on February 15th. Then it will be time for Halloween.

  4. Great post, Dan. I have a special love for President Jimmy Carter because of his work with Habitat for Humanity. I was an unskilled volunteer for a while. The Carters’ example sparked my commitment. 😊

    1. I was so impressed when I read about them doing that work, Gwen. I liked him because he was a scientist. I also remember reading that his staff gave him the woodworking equipment to set up a wood shop in his home after leaving the White House.

  5. Bonus points are adding up for you, Dan!
From a raging river under the trestle, to flag – you sure got everything covered today!!

    1. Thanks GP. You know I can’t resist bonus points. Since Thanksgiving, we’ve gone from drought conditions on that river to my favorite park being flooded. We’ve had ice form a few times, but never enough to last. Who knows what we’ll see next.

        1. Right now, we have a stiff cold wind blowing, but not much snow in the forecast. I’m good with that.

  7. I’m glad you got all the versions sorted. What a mess when one loses a drive. I recently added a new external hard drive a big one. I tend to fill them up too quickly with images. 😂 It’s so scary when one goes down!

I LOVE that leaf frozen in your water dish.

    1. I have to get a large external drive at some point. I have backup device that is large enough, but it’s not that easy to explore. I have photos on a network-attached device, but the access requires the company to be in business. I have the drive, but for six weeks in 2023, I couldn’t access it, due to some snafu at the company. I’m guessing your image files are larger than mine.

The leaf in the water dish was so close to the surface. It melted free by mid-morning. I’m glad I got the picture when I did.

      1. I’ve had an online cloud based backup drive for years. Thankfully, the few times I’ve had to retrieve my files from it when I’ve lost a drive has been a good experience and no issues getting the files. Fingers crossed that continues to be the case.

It’s really good that you had the foresight to take that shot of the leaf when you did!

        1. Box has been really good for years. The service is good but the tech-support is awful. I think their overall rating on support is 1.7 out of 5.

  9. Between the trials and tribulations of being an author, and all the gobbledygook with the internet, you still manage to stay upright. Bravo!

The birds, squirrels, chipmunks and one exceptional stray cat all get along here. So what’s wrong with us humans?!

Love the foggy photos, especially of Old Glory. Great shot of the trestle too.

I had to laugh at the leaf in the bird bath. I have to remove as many leaves now from our bird bath as I did during fall. But at least in the fall I wasn’t freeing a block of ice!

I wasn’t a fan of Jimmy Carter as our President, but I admired him as one of the greatest humanitarians ever. What he managed to accomplish is mind boggling.

Happy Saturday Dan. Hope you’re staying warm. Have an enjoyable weekend.

    1. We have so many photos of birds and other critters side by side at the buffet out here, Ginger. It’s amazing how easy it is to get along when everyone has enough to eat and a place to call home.

Jimmy Carter wasn’t the best president, although I wasn’t paying enough attention to know who to blame, him or Congress. But he was an amazing elder statesman and human being. Not many politicians can say that.

Our water bowls haven’t been running free very often the past several weeks. We try to keep them clean and full, but it’s hard when it stays below freezing.

The technology and the “process” can be frustrating when it gets in the way of what I’m trying to do. I feel like the users I used to support (but I gave them better service than Amazon and Box gave me).

I hope you can stay warm this weekend.

  18. Great fog pic. We rarely have fog but it was thick as mud the night before last and I wanted to stay out in it except it was bloody cold! Keep hoping it would snow but so far only about 16 teeny flakes fell today. Mostly lots of windy conditions. Which means more drab and brown on the horizon.
