I don’t have a Thursday Doors recap today, but I thought I’d feature a bunny for those people who depend on seeing that bunny each week. Without the recap, I wouldn’t normally post on Sunday, but as we are in the early days of Linda Hill’s Just Jot it January challenge, I’m still going strong. I will try to be brief.

Today’s JusJoJan prompt is frustration offered by Barbara at Teleportingweena. Please check out her place if you have a few minutes.

Do you recognize the line I used for the title? It was spoken by Yul Brynner in The Magnificent Seven when one of the other characters was convinced that Brynner’s character was trying to deceive him when he was telling the truth. That’s the frustrating feeling I’m getting more and more often with search engines that employ AI.

I search for something, trying to be precise, but the search engine responds with meaningless answers to the question it thinks I meant to ask. They have inserted an analytical layer between my question and the search for the answer — it isn’t helping.

    1. True, and there’s more of that than ever, too.

  2. Just not the same without the captions.

    1. The caption for the featured post was: “This was taken through the screen about 4:00 am. But bunny!”

    1. It does. It makes it harder to do research, as it leans toward popular culture, and I’m often looking for things in the past.

    1. That picture was taken very early, through the window/screen in our bedroom.

  5. haha, I asked my AI if it could do a picture and it started interrogating me. I’ll stick with the bunny, Danny.

    1. When it starts asking you for your credit card, it’s time to shut it down.

  6. AI could provide a whole month of postings. :-) Magnificent Seven was, well, magnificent.

    1. I’ve been avoiding this subject, but it’s driving me crazy. Between the search engine and Word suggesting “better” words and phrases, I work harder than I would if they weren’t there. I watched the Magnificent Seven again last week. I love that scene when they take the hearse up to Boot Hill.

  7. Judy said it perfectly Dan, “Magnificent Seven was, well, magnificent.”

I see AI as just Another Idiot. Just sayin’.

The featured bunny sure looks frustrated. Can’t find any food, any friends or even shelter. Poor guy.

Have a pleasant Sunday as we begin our first full week into 2025.

    2. Thanks Ginger. I do love that movie.

The bunny has plenty of shelter. He might not have much to eat, but looking at our shrubbery, he’s finding something.

I love Another Idiot as the definition of AI.

I guess we can be grateful this storm is passing below us. Take care.

  8. What drives me nuts is to use advanced search to include limiters and get back responses that I told the database not to give me.

    1. I find that, too. I’ve even specified exact date or at least years, only to have them be ignored.

  9. River Girl will be happy, but yes, the bunny looks startled this morning. He looks like he is listening for danger. Or maybe he’s just so cold he’s looking for shelter.

    1. He lives under our porch, which is about twenty feet away. He might be startled because I took the photo through the window at 4:00 am.

  10. I have been working with local Ollama and when I get a soft, meaningless or dishonest answer, I repeatedly tell Ollama to “try harder” and it works. I have also found that AI is quite willing to do something that humans are rarely willing to do: admit they were wrong.

    1. I’ll have to give that a try. I’m not working with a dedicated AI tool. I’m just frustrated by the AI features they’re adding to regular tools that previously worked pretty well. Maybe they’re trying to chase me to their AI offerings. Microsoft Word is constantly suggesting bizarre changes. I write, “Dan called Greg” an Word suggests, “Dan is called Greg” because it seems to have forgotten that some people use phones to call other people.

  12. Isn’t that frustrating! AI answers are the first thing that pop of whenever I make a query about something. I now just scroll past those answers and look for real people’s answers, dictionaries, and encyclopedias…not wiki-links.

    1. We do have to move down the list. Past the sponsored links that often aren’t even related.

  13. You’re right. It takes longer to find an answer to something because of the AI suggesting similar but not quite right topics. Then if you change your question just a little bit, you’ll get a whole other set of suggestions. haha :)

  17. A lot of people seem to embrace the AI trend…I’m resisting. I can’t Siri on the same page, so imagine I’d be even more disappointed if I tried. There’s a lot of work left to be done before I’m on board.

    1. I’m resisting where I can, too. It’s getting harder, as they keep adding it to processes where it might save someone some money, but it doesn’t always improve results. I suspect the problems I had with my latest book were caused by Amazon turning more of the review process over to AI. The book was a composite of three books that had already been published. I know the issue that caused the grief, and while I’m sure the early process caught it,. a human reviewer could easily understand why it wasn’t a problem. the AI process seemed to be confused.

  18. Agreed. It isn’t Artificial Intelligence, it’s Artificial Stupidity, and we have plenty of that in the wild.

  19. Hi Dan – I love Another Idiot description … but sadly having heard a few things today … I’m very anxious. I was meant to go to a TED group talk on it today – but ran out of time … I think bunnies with rabbit holes to travel down make sense … anything to get away … cheers and Happy New Year – Hilary

    1. Thanks Hilary. There are many good uses for AI, but I think it’s being implemented in ways and places that it’s not ready to handle. No one is questioning whether the results are better than what we had before. They’re content knowing that it’s cheaper.

Yes, AI on search engines are only so helpful. I have better luck with chagpt where I can redirect it or ask it to drill down deeper. Good luck.

And thanks for the bunny photo!

    1. My concern is the degree to which companies are implementing AI-driven processes where they haven’t been proven to help. It reminds me of when (late 1990s) they moved processes to the Web before it was really capable of improving on-premises systems.

      1. Oh, I can relate to those terrible phone systems where AI is completely unhelpful. I can imagine it gets very dicey when impacting a company’s operations.

  21. Lately, I have been using AI and I will say that we do not need AI for all purposes. However, the way the world works these days that if a thing is in fashion, everyone implements it for everything. It’s like you don’t want it but you have to because everyone is using it. Sad but that is how things are looking right now.
