We are closing out the first full week of 2025 and it looks like this year is going to roll down the line as fast and furious as the one before it. We can’t slow it down, and the only way to stop it isn’t a good option. Still, David and I will hold tight to the bar rail each Saturday and see if we can make any sense of things. We’re careful what we share here. I know there aren’t a lot of sports fans, and politics is a hard no. Still, we’ll find something interesting, and see if we can’t manage to handle Linda’s prompt. In January, the prompt is twofold—SoCS and JusJoJan.

Stream of Consciousness Saturday by Linda G. Hill

If we were having a beer, you’d be curious.

“Good afternoon, David.”

“Good afternoon, my young friend.”

“Young friend? I’m closing the gap on you.”

“You’ll always be the same number of years younger than me, Dan.”

“Yeah but the difference means less each year. It’s getting to be a little thing.”

“Little things matter, Dan.”

“Indeed, they do. Little things like a snifter of seltzer alongside your John Howell’s Bourbon.”

“Ah, the call of the not so wild. Good afternoon, gentlemen.”

“Good afternoon, Curley.”

“I poured David’s concoction, and a nice cold Modelo for you, Dan.”

“Thanks Curley. Cheers, David.”

“Cheers. Can I ask you a question about blogging?”

“Sure, David. Are you thinking of starting a blog?”

“Heavens no, Dan. But I’m curious about this new challenge you started.”

Cee’s Fun Foto Challenge? It’s not new, it’s been around for years.”

“Yes, but it hasn’t been your challenge. Why take on another challenge?”

“I didn’t want to see it end. I participated in it often. A lot of people like it.”

“But you already manage a challenge.”

“Right, so I already know what to do, and this one Is easier than Thursday Doors.”

“Which you also took over from someone, right?”

“Yes, Norm Frampton.”

“But you added several things to that one. Any plans for CFFC?”

“No, none. I’m keeping this one as is. It works well.”

“Thursday Doors worked well, but that didn’t stop you from messing with it. I mean, your running a badge contest as we drink.”

“Norm was planning to add a badge. Cee already had a great one, and she said I could keep using it.”

“What about the recap? You added that.”

“Yes, but that was also a programming exercise. I enjoyed writing the code to produce that. It’s almost fully automated — it looks like way more work than it is.”

“Are you adding one to CFFC?”

“No. There’s no need. The history of CFFC is documented on the Challenge page. So is the future for that matter. As long as I write the posts, I’ve been writing every week, it chugs right along.”

“What’s the attraction, Dan? Are you that interested in doors and buildings and all the things in Cee’s challenge?”

“No, David. It’s the little things.”

“Like what? A bunch of random people post a bunch of random photos loosely aligned with a theme of sorts.”

“You don’t read enough of them David.”

“What am I missing?”

“First, the people aren’t random, they’re very special. You’re also missing poetry, history, stories about adventures past and present. People have shared personal history, ancient mythology, historical trivia, rumors, impressions. The posts are entertaining and informative. I was reading most of them before I was running the challenges.”

“Little things? Those sound like pretty remarkable things, Dan.”

“That they are, David, but these challenges attract some remarkable people.

All five of my current books are now available in audio book form thanks to Amazon KDP’s Virtual Voice process. The voice is AI generated, but I can honestly say, it’s pretty darn good. The audio books are reasonably priced (all below $7 US) and, if you already own the Kindle version and want to add an audio version, you can do that for $1.99. There is a five-minute sample on the book page for each book. If you’re interested, click on any of the Dreamer’s Alliance book links below the image or on the link below for my latest book.

    1. Cheers, Brian. People have questioned my taking on another challenge. I needed to set the record straight.

  5. No snow for you either? We’re due for a dusting this afternoon… it’s nuts.

    1. No snow. They said we might get some this morning, but less than an inch. I’d much prefer looking at a snow-covered yard.

  6. It’s all about the community. The people who join in are special and in turn enhance our every day lives. :-) So far, we have just barely enough snow to see on the road but it isn’t even sticking to the grass.

Our street and sidewalks are covered, but not very deep. I’ll be able to sweep them clear.

  10. You are the master leader of challenges, Dan. I think you should be given the title of Curator. The photos are great, and I enjoyed the discussion today. It gave me insight into why you took on Cee’s.

  11. Well hell Dan, I guess I’m the oddball here. It never crossed my mind to question why you took on the CFFC Challenge. It’s so “you” to step up to the plate and keep this blogging community in tact. Even though I don’t have a blog, I have great admiration for all of you who do. Reading them and participating in the comments lights up my day! I LOVE reading all the comments!

I like that you keep the lights on through Orthodox Christmas. My s-in-l and granddaughter are Greek Orthodox.

The backlit leaves and the stegosaurus are great, as is the shadow from the fencing.

Old Glory looking mighty fine, even at half staff.

Have a fun weekend. No shoveling involved, maybe a bit of sweeping. Just a dusting here. Yaayyy!

    1. Thanks Ginger. Even without a blog, you are a remarkable member of this community. There’s no replacing you.

It’s been so cold here, that I haven’t been walking or even driving around, unless I had somewhere to go. I’m glad I was able to get a few pictures to share. I wanted to get the ice on the river. If it warms up, that may not last very long. It’s been a long time since the river froze over.

I love how the few surviving leaves stand against the wind and (hopefully) are warmed by the sun. I know, they’ve already fallen, but…

I will be sweeping the snow clear before heading out on a few errands. I hope you have a nice weekend.

    1. Thanks Jennie. Norm and Cee did the hard work of creating and building the challenges. My job is relatively easy by comparison. I enjoy them both, and I appreciate the work Norm and Cee put in to get them going.

Well done, Dan. And another fine gallery of pics. Winter shadows and lighting are so intriguing and you’ve captured both so well.
