Badge entry Ritva
Ritva at Ritva Sillanmäki Photography

Welcome to Thursday Doors! This is a weekly challenge for people who love doors and architecture to come together to admire and share their favorite door photos, drawings, or other images or stories from around the world. If you’d like to join us, simply create your own Thursday Doors post each (or any) week and then share a link to your post in the comments below, anytime between 12:01 am Thursday morning and Saturday noon (North American eastern time). If you like, you can add our badge to your post.

The badge contest ended in a tie, so I will be altering the badge I use here, but you are welcome to use either of the winning badges.

I still haven’t been able to get out for a doorcursion, but I have decided where I hope to visit when I do. I’m calling that progress. When running errands, I tend to follow a well established route. Last week, I had an errand to run first, which caused me to reverse my route. This exposed me to a new view of a well known route. I took advantage of that and stopped to snap a few photos.

I don’t know much about the photo beyond the fact that they we in my field of view. I’m going with them anyway, no hesitation. “Hesitation” by the way, is the JusJoJan prompt from Wendy https://waffle-with-wendy.blogspot.com/ Please check out her blog.

I hope you enjoy the photos in the gallery. I also hope you take a few minutes and follow some of the links to the other participant blogs.

All five of my current books are now available in audio book form thanks to Amazon KDP’s Virtual Voice process. The voice is AI generated, but I can honestly say, it’s pretty darn good. The audio books are reasonably priced (all below $7 US) and, if you already own the Kindle version and want to add an audio version, you can do that for $1.99. There is a five-minute sample on the book page for each book. If you’re interested, click on any of the Dreamer’s Alliance book links below the image or on the link below for my latest book.

  8. There is a lesson here I think. Something about doing something different to get another perspective. I love all of them and the snow does add to the photos. I especially like the back of St. Patricks.

      1. We take the dogs to the beach most mornings. We always start at one end and walk around to the other end which takes us near a coffeeshop, where hubby and I have a coffee/tea and the girls get a treat. One day there was no parking so we had to park at the other end and walk the opposite way around. The dogs were so confused! Hubby and I, thankfully, managed OK. LOL

  9. Loved St Patrick’s and the Raised Ranch Dan. Great buildings to see without even trying to find interesting ones. I also love fire stations and seeing how they differ in various towns and cities. Here are my doors for this week https://wrookieschu.com/2025/01/30/doors-of-wordpress-v108/

  10. Hi Dan, a wonderful set of buildings and doors this week, and the snow and gorgeous blue skies add to this uplifting collection. I love the idea of reversing the route. 25 years ago I went walking with my uncle in Nepal, and his advice to me (he is a photographer and seasoned walker) was to stop every few minutes and look back at the view where you came from, it is not an exaggeration to say that the advice was life-changing, and it is something I consciously do whenever I go exploring.

Some more doors from Peterborough from me this week: http://scooj.org/2025/01/30/thursday-doors-30-january-2025-doors-of-peterborough/#Peterborough#Cambridgeshire#UK

    1. That is really good advice, Steve. I do tend to do that, but I never gave it much thought. I think I will pay more attention to that from now on (I almost said, ‘going forward’).

You have some great doors this week.

  11. Lots of different door personalities here. I love those first two big white houses, and I’m just sure the one with the porch would offer me a rocking chair with peach cobbler — after the snow melts. What a beauty. I wonder what the story is on St. Patrick’s ghost windows. The lesson to look from a different viewpoint is invaluable — thanks for the reminder!

    1. I was surprised that the really big white house doesn’t have a porch. I’m sure the people at the other house would indeed offer a chair and some peach cobbler. In fact, I think I see a chair tucked in the right corner of that porch.

I’ve often wondered about those ghost windows. I’ve looked, but I haven’t found an explanation. I wonder if they hoped to one day add stain glassed windows.

      Have a great weekend!

      1. A big mistake I made when we built the house at the coast. I wish I had put in a three car garage. If I had I would have had room to work on my Toyota FJ40. As it was, I had to sell it.

  18. A different view, like a different point of view, can be a real eye-opener. I have looked at something and thought “nothing to write home about “, then looked from a slightly different angle and thought, “this is really neat.”

You use the term ‘impressive’ on your last photo. I would apply impressive to the entire gallery. Love ghost windows and doors. Looks like stained glass windows once occupied that space, but I can’t imagine why they would close it up. Maybe windows were damaged beyond repair and replacement was too expensive.

Great gallery Dan. I’ll be glad when the wind calms down.

  24. I lived in a raised ranch on two occasions but we called them split levels. Not my favorite style of house.

    1. Thanks Dale. When I was working, I made a point to know every back road away from the highway at every exit. For the last two years, I didn’t even try to take the highway home. Traffic was unreliable. A lot of my previous door posts came from those last minute detours.

  27. Great photos, Dan, all of them.
You are right, the change in one’s route, even a small reverse or switch-up, adds more richness to the view. It’s amazing!

Sorry Dan, I was attempting to pick a favorite but lost track along the way. The Barn is, of course, a standout for me as I love the look of how barns weather with time, usage, and the elements.

The wonderful classy house with the cream siding is fabulous.

That “raised house” has a chimney with a very unique, almost curved angle. I’ve not seen anything like that before. I have heard of chimneys bent inside the home near the roof to perfect the angle but never seen one almost curved in that way on the rooftop…pretty cool!

Love the pole in front of the house with the commercial space on the right side.

P.S. Well done integration of the Wendy’s prompt work for JustJoJan “Hesitation”

    1. Thanks Suzette. It was interesting seeing some views that I drive past often, but never noticed. The chimney might only appear curved. I think it’s been modified with an insert, maybe due to switching to a different fuel.
