Punxsutawney Phil, a groundhog in Pennsylvania, crawled out of his burrow, saw his shadow, crawled back in and hit the snooze button. Legend has it that if he sees his shadow on February 2nd, it means we will have six more weeks of winter. NOAA, the official weather forecasting agency in the United States reminds us that Phil is historically accurate less than 30% of the time. Of course, for a forecast of ten or more days, they’re only accurate a little less than 50% of the time. And, in fairness, this year, Phil is predicting for 42 days.

Well, I don’t know about weeks two through six, but this first week of his forecast is shaping up to be anything but an early spring (that’s what we get if he doesn’t see his shadow). Not only that, but our forecast has brought the dreaded two-word phrase that I consider the worst in weather.

A wintry mix will affect Poughkeepsie and Albany, New York; Hartford, Connecticut; and Springfield and Boston, Massachusetts. Snow, freezing rain, and sleet before 4pm, then a slight chance of freezing rain between 4pm and 5pm, then a slight chance of freezing rain and sleet after 5pm. Patchy fog before 8am, then patchy fog after noon.

  1. That groundhog thing is a bit weird but if people need to believe let them I say.
I like the movie though 😀
A good mix of snow photos and others Dan

    1. Thanks Brian. I’m not sure if anyone actually believes it, but there aren’t a lot of things to do in central Pennsylvania in February. It was a good movie.

  2. Those first couple of snow pics are beautiful, Dan, but I don’t envy you. Surely winter is normally around till March in your part of the world, but no harm in being optimistic.

    1. Thanks Jo. I’ve always said that March can’t be trusted when it comes to weather. I like a winter that looks and feels like winter, so I’m ok with cold and snow. Freezing rain is another story. Other than some interesting photos, nothing good comes from that stuff.

  3. This has not been a pleasant winter. In fact, “Winter has been demoted to the fifth-best season,” says Punxsutawney Phil. But your photos are excellent, Dan.

    1. Thanks Dave. Poor winter, it gets a bad wrap, even from the groundhog.

  4. Those photos certainly show the beauty of winter. As always, I think the cypress in the snow is gorgeous. But this is about the time of year when that beauty starts to get tiresome; we are expecting that freezing rain later today, and there is no beauty in that! I hope it isn’t too bad there.

Looks to me as though things have changed in the Reader. I can’t keep up with WP.

    1. The cypress in the snow are so pretty. Back to back storms get tiresome quickly, and freezing rain never needs to happen as far as I’m concerned.

I’ll have to check the Reader. I never know what WP is doing. Stay warm and safe.

      1. I’ve had several weird things happening with my blog recently, but I’m at the point where I just shrug and mutter something. Do you remember when Calvin told Hobbes that tigers’ brains are like big bowls of tapioca? That describes mine perfectly these days, and I can take only so much. Trying to figure out WP is one too many.

        1. Calvin had such a wonderful way of capturing the essence of life. Then again, this might be one of the times that Hobbes would just roll over and take a nap.

  6. The calendar will tell us when spring (the season) arrives. Spring ‘weather’? That remains to be seen. Mother Nature has totally gone ’round the bend in the weather department.

Love those pigeons! Pigeon poop, not so much! I think we All know where the bunny lives. Good thing he isn’t an undercover agent!

I can’t believe that sign! Fantastic picture.

Exceptional photo of Old Glory with a brilliant blue sky as a backdrop.

Keep staying warm and don’t let the wind blow you away.

    1. Thanks Ginger. I don’t trust forecasts that go out very far. The birds and the squirrels seem to know when storms are coming, and they always seem to know when the storm has ended. They let me know, “It’s safe to clear some spots for the woman to put out food.”

I was sitting across from that sign, and I couldn’t figure out what was on the back until a plane came in and a few of them moved.

I had to get the flag photo at the market. I couldn’t make it to the park. Too much leftover ice on the sidewalks.

Stay warm, and be careful if we get freezing rain.

  7. I’ve already used the Toro once this week and chipped ice, but we’ve got 3-6″ coming in tomorrow and then more on Sunday. They had a great weekend of pond hockey up north last weekend, and the ice runway is going to be open again this weekend. The winter sports folks are loving it while us older folks not so much. ☃️

    1. It’s been a while since we got hit with two (or three) winter storms in one week. I like to think that we’re ready, but I don’t know how you get ready for freezing rain (other than to have enough food inside).

      Stay safe and warm.

  9. Right or wrong, Phil is the legend! Yep, his 35% is far from the best. Even my state’s Buckeye Chuck is only 55% percent – and they disagreed about this year! Something has got to give. For anyone interested, here’s the link to NOAA’s stats. https://www.noaa.gov/heritage/stories/grading-groundhogs …. good luck with the upcoming blast of ice.

    1. Thanks Frank. My brother sent me that week on Sunday. That’s what started me on this post. I guess every state has their own groundhog. Connecticut’s is Chuckles, and he says we’re going to have an early spring. We might, but not this week.

  11. We’ve had gale force winds since Friday. The rain has been on and off since. They’re calling it an Atmospheric River. There hasn’t been that much rain, but the wind yesterday was 28mph sustained with 39mph gusts. It’s not been fun trying to keep the cover on the patio table. We gave up and took it off yesterday afternoon.

    Stay warm!

    1. We took the cover off our grill for the same reasons. It was almost 40 yesterday, but barely 20 today at the same time.

      Stay warm and dry.

  13. It was cloudy here when Phil made an appearance and still, there are always six more weeks of winter in Wisconsin. We have had a dry and cold winter so far (January was FOREVER), so my expectation is for a snowy March, right when we start hoping for spring. Hope I’m wrong, but I’ve lived here long enough to know that neither a groundhog nor a meteorologist can keep the weather from doing what it’s going to do.

  15. The swooping pigeons are beautiful, Dan! Our weather–after the snowstorm of the century–is spring-like. Highs in the 70s and lows in the 60s. Can A/C weather be far behind?? Craziness.

    1. We might see an isolated 70-degree day in February (it has happened in the past two years), but sustained temps above 60 are a good way off. Not to worry, though, my will will have me uncover the compressor before it’s truly needed.

  16. Love the bunny tracks in the snow. Not grooving on this whiplash weather, though. Just pick one, Mother Nature, make it springlike or winter.
