David and I are trying to squeeze an adult beverage and maybe a bite to eat in between storms. Thursday brought us a little bit of snow topped with a layer of freezing rain. Tonight is supposed to bring us a much healthier amount of snow. It’s okay, we’re ready. And, since the snow will be falling overnight, it’s safe for us to have a touch of the creature while we work on Linda’s prompt:

Stream of Consciousness Saturday prompt by Linda G. Hill

If we were having a beer, you be concerned for my safety.

“Are you ready for the snow that’s coming tonight, Dan?”

“I guess so.”

“You guess so. What kind of answer is that? This is binary, you’re either ready or you’re not.”

“Well, I have a near full keg of Modelo, and a half a bottle of John Howell’s Bourbon, so I think I’m ready.”

“Cheryl. It’s good to see you again. I was beginning to think Curley had you tied up out back.”

“I’m a warm weather girl. I don’t like single-digits or negative numbers. If he’s willing to brave the cold, more power to him.”

“What about snow? It’s going to snow tonight.”

“Yeah, that’s Curley’s problem. I’m out if here at four. Here you go. Bourbon, seltzer, ice and cherries and a nice cold Modelo for Dan.”

“Cheers, Dan. Now, about that binary question I asked.”

“It’s never binary where the weather’s involved. My snowblower is ready, I have gas, I have shovels, so I think I’m ready, but I never bet against Mother Nature.”

“She sure threw us a curve ball on Thursday. Were you okay in the ice?”

“Yeah, but I hate when snow changes to freezing rain.”

“I like that. It’s better than freezing rain on bare pavement.”

“That’s the thing, David. If you clear the snow, you have ice on bare pavement. If you don’t clear the snow, it gets wet and heavy and it clogs the machine.”

“What did you do?”

“I waited until it changed to rain, and then I raised the blower up a notch and left a little snow on the ground.”

“I didn’t know you could do that.”

“My snowblower has three height settings. Very high which I use on the grass when making paths to the firewood and when I used to make ‘rest areas’ for Maddie. Then a medium and a low setting. The low setting scrapes the surface, for when the storm starts with ice before it snows.”

“Is it hard to adjust?”

“Nope. I push a pedal with my foot and lift or lower the hand grips.”

“From that picture you shared, it looks like you spilled your coffee.”

“I did. The cap loosens with the vibration and the cold. Sometimes, I forget to tighten it before taking a drink.”

“So, the windshield isn’t the only thing covered in coffee.”

“Yeah, my work jacket could use a post season wash.”

“How long does your coffee stay warm out there?”

“It’s pretty hot when I get it. My wife preheats the cup, then fills it and hands it to me as I pass the side door.”

“Like Charlie.”

“Huh?”

“Charlie. The Kingston Trio. The guy stuck on the M.T.A.  ‘“’Charlie’s wife goes down to the Sculley Square Station every day at quarter past two. And through the open window she hands Charlie a sandwich as the train comes rumblin’ through‘…”

“Look, David. I know you grew up in Boston, so maybe there’s something I don’t understand, but why didn’t she hand him a nickle?”

“My young friend, you are simply too literal.”

“So I’ve been told.”

“Did you treat the ice with anything after it finally stopped falling?”

“I did. I put some salt and sand on the driveway and on the sidewalk.”

“Can you buy that premixed?”

“I get it from Public Works. It’s the same stuff they use on the roads. They have a bulk storage area for residents. I fill a five-gallon bucket.”

“That’s a nice feature. Is it free?”

“Well, they bought it with tax dollars, so, it’s more like free-ish.”

  1. Snow, ice and freezing rain… How mean can mother nature get! I do hope you can all keep safe and warm…. I love the photos …what I hate Dan is when the thaw comes and the snow turns to wet and dirty slush and there is water everywhere. Have a cosy weekend 💜💜💜

    1. That used to happen every spring in our back yard, Willow. Our first Irish Setter loved playing in that mess. 40 years later, we still refer to that as the “Mitzi Slops.”

  3. Beer, pizza and bourbon? I’d say you’re ready for anything. 😉
We avoided that ice and thankfully stayed all snow… with another 6-8 inches due tonight. Our shovels are getting a workout.

  6. We got almost 4″ on Thursday along with the ice, but all that fell on the ice already on the driveway. Even with YakTrax on my boots, it was like skating while trying to snow blow. I can’t adjust mine like you mentioned. It was the most treacherous I’ve experienced ever. I felt lucky I only fell once, and I’m not looking forward to Sunday’s round of removal. I’ve used 30 lbs of ice melt since Monday and haven’t made a dent. I accept it’s winter, I just wish we’d get a break with the icy snow removal.

    1. I hope you can stay safe on that slideway, Judy. I fell earlier in the year when some melt-water was laying over a patch of ice. I’m not taking any chances now. IT looks like there are storms lining up behind this one. I guess Mother Nature is trying to make up for last year.

    2. Yikes. Not fun, not safe! When YakTrax can’t handle it, you know you’re in trouble. I too wish you’d get a break; this has been one exhausting weather plague.

  9. It looks awful there! And what Judy describes equally so. So far we haven’t been hit as hard as you and Judy have been hit, but this parade of storms isn’t over. Falling is not recommended! You are so right about Mother Nature and being binary. No way do we ever know for sure until it’s over. I hope you’ll get through it safely.

    1. Thanks Maureen. I hope we all get through this without injury. I fell once this year, and I’m not looking to do it again. I guess we wait and see what tomorrow brings.

  11. Same weather expected here Dan. NOT looking forward to it. It’s feast or famine with Mother Nature any more. Why can’t she leave the miserable ice and freezing rain out of the mix?!

I laughed out loud at the ‘ice forming on the fence’ photo. Looks like a weird ice cream cone.

“The sand for residents” in your town caught my attention. I need to check to see if that’s offered here.

The birds couldn’t eat their breakfast fast enough today! Think they know what’s coming? Lol!

Be careful out there. Be sure to tell your snowblower how much you appreciate her. Gotta keep the ‘help’ happy.

    1. I cleaned her windshield. Ginger. I hope she knows how much I care. You’re right though, I’d be fine with snow, but please take the ice off the table. I guess we just have to wait and see what’s here when we get up.

The birds have been feasting around here. We’ll put some out early this afternoon, but I might be scattering it all over the place tomorrow. As soon as I clear the path and the old Maddie-Patty, food breakfast will be served. I need that tip jar.

  15. We’ve only had to shovel once this winter so far. We’ve had snow but, with temperatures in the mid 30’s during the day it melts pretty fast. That Little League poster announcing it’s sign up time is cheerful as it’s another sign that Spring is on the way back.

    1. Six weeks until spring, Deborah. I think the kids around here will be ready for baseball. Looks like we’re going to need to move some snow this week, but that’s a return to normal for us.

  17. The modifications you made to your snow machine are brilliant. I get that this post is about more than that, but I’m already worried about how far above 100 degrees it will get this summer, so the snow parts stand out. (Highs the past week have already been at 80 here. February is usually in the 40s.) Anyhow, I was thinking that the machine deserves a worthy name. Maybe the Snow Slayer? Stay safe and warm. Hugs.

    1. Snow Slayer – I knida like that, Tegan. This post is all over the map, but Linda says to have fun, so…

80 degrees in February doesn’t sound good to me. GP has the A/C on. Lois is not turning it on, despite setting warm weather records in February. Frankly, I’d rather have the snow. I can bundle up and get warm. I can’t do much to make working in the heat any easier.

I hope you have a good weekend.

  21. Hi Dand, I can relate to the snow, ice, rain and then sleet or the other way around, Dan. The weather here too seems quite extreme this winter, very low lows and then sudden warmer spells. I see from your list of ‘supplies’ that you have all the right “refreshments” on hand, that is always good plan to keep warm. Stay safe and warm. I hope the storm is not too fierce.

    Great share as always!.
