Welcome to the last Saturday of normal time. Yes, we lose an hour tonight so children can start riding the bus in the dark again and I can walk while the sun is rising. But I’m not going to complain — well, any more than I already have — the weekend is here, and David and I are going to make the most of it. Linda has given us a nice prompt, so we’ll work on that:

SoCS by Linda G. Hill

When Linda’s prompt arrived, the closest bit of printed matter was a proof copy of my work-in-progress. I was checking some layout issues I was worried about. It looks like my word is ‘cigars’ despite the fact that I don’t smoke.

Cigars
Cigars

If we were having a beer, you’d be mad at me.

“Good afternoon, David. How are you today?”

“I’m fine, Dan. It’s a little windy, but we’ve had a nice warm week.”

“I know, check out this photo. (see featured). Ain’t it amazing what six hours of pourin’ rain will do? Those fields are ready for kids, bats and balls.”

“Aw Dan, why did you do that?”

“Whoa, before you two get into a snit over something I could care less about, can I get you your drinks?”

“Yes, Curley. Set David up with a John Howell’s Special and pour me a cold Modelo.”

“Coming right up, Dan.”

“Now, David what on earth is it that I did to you?”

“You got that song stuck in my head.”

“What song? I Love a Rainy Night, Have You Ever Seen the Rain? I love Creedence. Or maybe my favorite ‘pouring rain’ song, Ain’t Wastin’ Time No More by the Allman Brothers.”

“Here’s your drinks, guys. A glass of bourbon, a snifter of seltzer and some ice for David. Oh, almost forgot, three cherries, and your beer, Dan. By the way, I think you’re on the wrong track. You want the track with the midnight train and at least three boxcars.”

Midnight Train To Georgia, Curley? There’s no rain in that song.”

“Curley’s right, Dan. The song now firmly stuck in my head is King of the Road, by Roger Miller.”

“There’s no rain in that song, either. How did I cause that?”

“You said, ‘six hours of pourin’ rain’ but I heard ‘two hours of pushin’ broom.’ And the rest of the song followed it into my head.”

“That’s so funny.”

“What is it that you find funny, Dan?”

“That you would remember that song. It hasn’t been played in about sixty years and it’s the most un-David song out there,”

“Why do you say that?”

“First off, when was the last time you pushed a broom? You hire people to bush your brooms. And, as for ‘an eight by twelve four-bit room,’ you have closets bigger than that.”

“I do not! Well, my wife does, but that’s only because she took over a small bedroom. My closet is quite normal in size.”

“Yeah, but I doubt there are any old worn-out suits and shoes in there.”

“Stop it! Stop it, you’re making it worse.”

“How’s that?”

“You’re reminding me of lyrics I had forgotten. Now this stupid song is stuck even farther in my head.”

“Another glass of John Howell’s Bourbon might make you forget. You boys want another round?”

“I think that’s a good idea, Curley.”

“Maybe David would like to step out for a smoke while I pour. I think I saw an old stogie in the parking lot.”

“That short cigar by the steps?”

“Okay, you guys, enough is enough.”

“Sorry, David. We couldn’t resist. You should know better than to tell two guys about something that bothers you.”

“Well, just for all that, you’re buying me a Wisconsin burger and some fries.”

“Okay. Curley, I think I’ll join him. Two Wisconsin burgers and crank up the playlist. Maybe we can flush that song out of his head.”

All five of my current books are now available in audio book form thanks to Amazon KDP’s Virtual Voice process. The voice is AI generated, but I can honestly say, it’s pretty darn good. The audio books are reasonably priced (all below $7 US) and, if you already own the Kindle version and want to add an audio version, you can do that for $1.99. 1. A fine selection of photos Dan, the water drops are so good. Looks like your Spring is about to arrive.
Not going to get me with the earworms though 😂

I did a book point and the word was honestly, honestly 😂

    1. That is amazing, Brian. I am impressed that you happened to have that photo. Good job. I do think spring it coming, but winter is fighting hard. A steady day of cold 30+ mph winds Thursday and yesterday.

      1. My photo file has all sorts Dan 😁 The winds here have been upwards of 100kph with driving rain I have had around 8 inches of rain.
The cyclone didn’t hit me and I am on the edge of it

  2. Hi Dan, this is a fun post. I really enjoyed its light heartedness. I’m so glad your clocks are moving back. The change puts my poetry meetings at a terrible time for me.

  3. It’s all a bit bleak out there, Dan, but with signs of promise. Except that now I’m stuck with that song too! Happy weekend!

    1. Sorry, Jo. I didn’t mean for any collateral damage from that song. I think spring is going to win, it’s just needs a few nice days to get started.

  4. I liked Curley’s line about D&D’s getting in a snit about something he could care less about. What could be worse than being afflicted with snits you can’t join in on? The views through the water drops are great — flying trashcans are not!

    1. Thanks Maureen. The trash cans were on the move yesterday, and so were the contents. I decided not to walk when I looked out and saw a large plastic bag moving down the street. The water drops held on tight on Thursday morning. I love seeing them.

  5. So I have to ask, what’s a Wisconsin burger?

    Liked by 2 people

    1. It’s pictured in the gallery at the top. It’s just the name this restaurant gives that burger. The big thing is that it’s served on toasted bread, not a bun. If you had Friendly’s up there, they used to make a burger like that. It was my favorite.

      Liked by 3 people

      1. Yes, I saw the picture but thought it might be something special… Wisconsin sauce? We used to have Friendlies but I think they’re all gone now.

        1. Lettuce, tomato, onions and cheese as I recall. The grilled bread was the signature element.

  6. I would be interested in using the ‘fine cigars’ photo for a post, with full accreditation of course. Please let me know if this would be a collaboration you would be interested in taking part in.

    1. Using the photo is fine with me. The book is a collaboration, and it’s still in draft form, so I can’t give you more information on it, but the photo is fine.

This post will have me laughing all day! You guys were in top form today! I will be singing Roger Williams songs all day!

A hyacinth, a crocus and a Robin, doesn’t get better than that. Sure sign spring will be bursting forth soon. Incredible shots through those raindrops. Dodging trash cans and other paraphernalia in these high winds is getting to be a daily exercise.

Old Glory looking mighty spiffy with lots of green around her.

Have a great weekend Dan. Not looking forward to adjusting to another time change. Sigh….

    1. I’m glad you enjoyed this, Ginger. It was fun to write. Way more fun than walking and driving the past few days. Those trash cans seemed like they were out to get me, along with a slew of branches.

Spring is on the move. We put Master Robin’s favorite bird bath out. I didn’t want to risk him showing up and finding a low water level. He prefers depth.

I can’t wait until the snow piles melt away and the park is fully green again.

      Have a great weekend.

  11. OMG. Damnit, Dan! When I was a VERY little girl I loved Roger Miller and sang his songs all of the time. Now I’ve got the full lyrics of King of the Road running through my brain and they won’t be leaving any time soon, and stuck in this apartment with no car, I don’t have any booze to drown it out! grrrrr♥

    1. I am sorry for getting the song stuck. I feel like I should deliver a bottle of bourbon. I’d say “dang me” but someone would surely be offended by the rest of those lyrics. Since you’re planning a move to the UK, how about “England Swings…” Sorry, I can’t help myself.

  17. Okay, Dan, I’ll bite. Exactly what is a “Wisconsin Burger” in your neck of the woods? Does it have three kinds of cheese and bacon on it? An unusual beer-flavored mayo? Does it taste like an old fashioned? Just wondering because around here, we get California burgers, burgers with eggs or bleu cheese or avocado or bacon on them? Is there a New England burger?

I know, lots of questions, but I have nothing else to comment on while that song gets stuck in my head. I would have participed today except I pointed to a blank spot on a page of my book and then ran out of time.

    Have a wonderful weekend!

    1. The burger has a little extra cheese but the signature element is that it is served on grilled bread rather than a roll (in the upper gallery). It thing the place likes to create names. There’s nothing weird about it (or I wouldn’t eat it).

      Enjoy the weekend.

  18. Your water drop photos are truly amazing! Love the banter about earworms. They sure can mess up one’s equilibrium, especially when they’re particularly annoying for extended periods. Almost all Pink Floyd cuts tend to do that for me. ;)

    Liked by 1 person

    1. Thanks. I don’t think I’ve ever had a Pink Floyd song stuck in my head (I don’t use the word earworm due to having see Star Trek the Wrath of Kahn). I love looking at water drops and I was glad to get some good pictures this time.
