Welcome to the last Saturday of normal time. Yes, we lose an hour tonight so children can start riding the bus in the dark again and I can walk while the sun is rising. But I’m not going to complain — well, any more than I already have — the weekend is here, and David and I are going to make the most of it. Linda has given us a nice prompt, so we’ll work on that:
Your Friday prompt for Stream of Consciousness Saturday is “open book, close eyes, point, write.” When you’re ready to sit down and write your SoCS post, open the closest printed matter, close your eyes, point to a word, and use it as your prompt. Use it any way you’d like. Have fun!
When Linda’s prompt arrived, the closest bit of printed matter was a proof copy of my work-in-progress. I was checking some layout issues I was worried about. It looks like my word is ‘cigars’ despite the fact that I don’t smoke.

If we were having a beer, you’d be mad at me.
“Good afternoon, David. How are you today?”
“I’m fine, Dan. It’s a little windy, but we’ve had a nice warm week.”
“I know, check out this photo. (see featured). Ain’t it amazing what six hours of pourin’ rain will do? Those fields are ready for kids, bats and balls.”
“Aw Dan, why did you do that?”
“Whoa, before you two get into a snit over something I could care less about, can I get you your drinks?”
“Yes, Curley. Set David up with a John Howell’s Special and pour me a cold Modelo.”
“Coming right up, Dan.”
“Now, David what on earth is it that I did to you?”
“You got that song stuck in my head.”
“What song? I Love a Rainy Night, Have You Ever Seen the Rain? I love Creedence. Or maybe my favorite ‘pouring rain’ song, Ain’t Wastin’ Time No More by the Allman Brothers.”
“Here’s your drinks, guys. A glass of bourbon, a snifter of seltzer and some ice for David. Oh, almost forgot, three cherries, and your beer, Dan. By the way, I think you’re on the wrong track. You want the track with the midnight train and at least three boxcars.”
“Midnight Train To Georgia, Curley? There’s no rain in that song.”
“Curley’s right, Dan. The song now firmly stuck in my head is King of the Road, by Roger Miller.”
“There’s no rain in that song, either. How did I cause that?”
“You said, ‘six hours of pourin’ rain’ but I heard ‘two hours of pushin’ broom.’ And the rest of the song followed it into my head.”
“That’s so funny.”
“What is it that you find funny, Dan?”
“That you would remember that song. It hasn’t been played in about sixty years and it’s the most un-David song out there,”
“Why do you say that?”
“First off, when was the last time you pushed a broom? You hire people to bush your brooms. And, as for ‘an eight by twelve four-bit room,’ you have closets bigger than that.”
“I do not! Well, my wife does, but that’s only because she took over a small bedroom. My closet is quite normal in size.”
“Yeah, but I doubt there are any old worn-out suits and shoes in there.”
“Stop it! Stop it, you’re making it worse.”
“How’s that?”
“You’re reminding me of lyrics I had forgotten. Now this stupid song is stuck even farther in my head.”
“Another glass of John Howell’s Bourbon might make you forget. You boys want another round?”
“I think that’s a good idea, Curley.”
“Maybe David would like to step out for a smoke while I pour. I think I saw an old stogie in the parking lot.”
“That short cigar by the steps?”
“Okay, you guys, enough is enough.”
“Sorry, David. We couldn’t resist. You should know better than to tell two guys about something that bothers you.”
“Well, just for all that, you’re buying me a Wisconsin burger and some fries.”
“Okay. Curley, I think I’ll join him. Two Wisconsin burgers and crank up the playlist. Maybe we can flush that song out of his head.”

All five of my current books are now available in audio book form thanks to Amazon KDP’s Virtual Voice process. The voice is AI generated, but I can honestly say, it’s pretty darn good. The audio books are reasonably priced (all below $7 US) and, if you already own the Kindle version and want to add an audio version, you can do that for $1.99. There is a five-minute sample on the book page for each book. If you’re interested, click on any of the Dreamer’s Alliance book links below the image or on the link below for my latest book.
