We’re continuing our series focusing on food, this week. If you want to see where we are going from here, check the CFFC home page.

We are looking for photos that suggest lunch or dinner. Again. Anything that makes you think of these afternoon and/or evening meals works. My featured image brings us back to the days of car hops and juke boxes. It’s my favorite place for fish and chips, and there is a juke box inside. Since we’re in the early days of Lent, I’m starting with fish. Actually, it isn’t much of a sacrifice for me.

I don’t usually add an introduction to the shameless marketing attempt below, but food is an important part of my books. I believe that people like to eat, and that many of the important conversations in life take place during a meal. Readers have said not to read these books on an empty stomach.

All five of my current books are now available in audio book form thanks to Amazon KDP’s Virtual Voice process. The voice is AI generated, but I can honestly say, it’s pretty darn good. The audio books are reasonably priced (all below $7 US) and, if you already own the Kindle version and want to add an audio version, you can do that for $1.99. There is a five-minute sample on the book page for each book. If you’re interested, click on any of the Dreamer’s Alliance book links below the image or on the link below for my latest book.

  2. Lots of good food, Dan! I’ll have fish n chips and my husband will have prime rib. Happy birthday to Faith. I haven’t been to a Dim Sum restaurant for many years. I’ll find one close by and take my family there.

    1. Thanks Miriam. I’m not sure that Dim Sum restaurant survived Covid. It was in China Town in NYC. A friend of mine took me there and it was an amazing experience.

      1. I know, Dan! Many restaurants, stores, and museums didn’t survived Covid. A Children’s Museum in Portland didn’t survive either. We were sad to see it go. It was pretty much an indoor playground for kids and it was convenient for parents especially in the winter.

  3. Not fair Dan. I’ve been away for a few days and the fridge is empty. I have been thinking of what I could have for dinner 🤔 You have been a help of sorts. Oven cooked fish ‘n’ chips could be had.
It does peeve me when you get served a meal with the fish or meat on top of the chips. It’s OK if you like soggy chips I guess.
I like the stove as well.
Hope you didn’t inflict your usual conversations at Curlys with David on Faith for her birthday dinner 😂

    1. I am sorry, Brian. I know the affect food photos have (he says while staring down at his toast). The birthday meal was in the restaurant at the CN Tower in Toronto. Faith had just turned 19, and that was the drinking age in Canada (as opposed to 21 here).

I do wish the fish was separated from the fries, but in Skooter’s I can barely finish the fries anyway, and the fish is usually off to the side so the center fries are crisp.

I hope your dinner was good and you have a good week.

      1. It was a great time thanks Dan.
I ended up having vegetable sprig rolls cooked in the oven and I made a soy sauce, sweet chilli sauce and chilli jam dipping sauce.
Decided that lunch last Friday was a good one for CFFC plus I had some photos 😁
The chips were on the side of the plate too

    1. That’s so cool, Willow. David and I were there for a programming conference. We picked David up at Logan Airport in Boston (he’s from Ipswich) and we all drove up together. We had such fun. Faith turned 19, which was the drinking age in Canada (ours was 21), so she was a legal drinker for a few days.

      1. I have asked before but I believe David is from Ipswich US and not Ipswich UK?

The CN tower is an excellent venue and I bet Faith enjoyed being a legal drinker for her stay 💜💜

        1. Nope, David is from Ipswich UK. The photos of Issac’s I shared last week were taken when I visited him in 2011. Before that, he lived in Tuddenham St. Martin (sp?)

Before dinner, we toured the tower and stopped at the bar. Faith ordered an Espresso Martini. David looked at me and said, “She’s legal today but I don’t think this is her first time at a bar.”

Food and conversations are a perfect couple. That Dim Sum restaurant is ginormous! You photographed some delicious looking meals Dan, not to mention great pictures of you, Faith and David.

I love that stove too. My great aunt Emma had one in her kitchen back in the 50’s, and she produced some delicious meals from it.

Have a happy Monday followed by a great week.

The women that cooked on those stoves (I remember my mother’s Aunt Alice) were amazing cooks.

I don’t know if the Dim Sum restaurant survived Covid. You certainly couldn’t put a crowd like that on the street in China Town. A friend took me there. I’m glad I had the experience (I’m not even sure what all I ate).

  17. The corner of Main and Bacon? Seriously? The fish sandwich at Immaculate Heart sure took me back to the fish fries that build our parish and school back in the 50s. I think the stove was a little more modern than the one here, but truly I think it was the shrieks of laughter in the kitchen that fried the fish! Great family photos — and how well family and food go together (especially when someone else cleans up)!

    1. It is on the corner of Main and Bacon. The perfect address for a diner. The kitchen crew in that church was having a very good time. They reminded me of the women in my grandmother’s church. One of the men (who was probably only there to lift stuff) came out and sat with us for a while. We learned a lot about the parish history, including historic battles with the Archdiocese. I think every parish has those stories, but they were fun to listen to. We’re going back again this year.

    1. Awww, Dale. The fish sandwich and the fish fry were both for a good cause. That has to count for something. Also, we were planning to have a fish taco when the waitress told us that the special was prime rib. So, you know, it wasn’t really our fault.

  19. Our local newspaper always has an article on which churches offer Fish Fry meals during Lent. The Catholic church has too many rules about when you can order/pick up a meal. The Lutheran church ‘knows their stuff’ according to my husband. So Fridays has him on the prowl, stalking the Lutheran church for when they open up for lunch.

    1. Fish fries aren’t popular around here, Lois, but there are so many in Pittsburgh that the paper publishes and interactive map on their website! We’re going back down this year. Last year, Faith had just added fish to her vegetarian diet so we drove down to Pittsburgh. She was perusing the map and picked out a Methodist church that was nearby. I vetoed that selection – I grew up in a Methodist church, and it’s not where you go for food. I told her to find a Polish church. Immaculate Heart is located in an area of Pittsburgh known as Polish Hill. Yep, that’s the place for us. I’m glad your husband knows the drill.

      Liked by 1 person

      1. That is funny about the Methodist churches not being known for food. We have zero Polish churches down here. The best fish dinners come with hush puppies and oh, my are people particular about their hush puppies. Cole slaw, baked beans and a roll are all good, but the hush puppies have to be perfect.

        Liked by 1 person

        1. I have yet to find a place anywhere around here that makes good hush puppies. The worst was a place that had hush puppies on the menu, but I couldn’t even recognize what was served. I asked and the waitress said, “Our chef makes Korea hush puppies.”

The churches we go to in Pittsburgh both have fish and Polish food. We eat the fish on Friday night, and take enough takeout (pierogis, huluski) to go for a meal on Saturday.

This lunch was at a BBQ Cafe in Mandalay, Shrimp Pad Thai with extra crushed peanuts, chile flakes, lime, bean sprouts chives and lettuce in Thailand. We had a combo of Takoyaki, doughy balls filled with octopus or squid and BBQ chicken for lunch  in Yoyogi Park in Tokyo. The Takyaki was a little too much like runny pancake mix, possibly undercooked, and the chicken was definitely undercooked – we took it back twice to get it cooked. Or maybe the Japanese undercook everything, at least that’s what it seems with sushi, which I actually love. This annotated menu was for a sushi tasting in Vancouver; in Japan we were using film and only took a photo of the Takoyaki because it was outside. Really fresh scallop at a fish cafe and mussels on Lamma Island, a short ferry ride away from Hong Kong. More of Dan’s CFFC: Suggesting Lunch or Dinner. […]
