Happy first Saturday of May. One third of this year has flown by but some things remain the same. Like the fact that David and I like to relax, share a couple adult beverages, a couple of laughs and work at Linda’s weekend prompt:

SoCS by Linda G. Hill

If we were having a beer, you’d be your typical self.

“Good afternoon, my young friend.”

“Good afternoon, David. You know as we both get older, the difference between our ages becomes less impressive.”

“Ah yes, but you’ll never catch me. I’ll always be older and wiser.”

“Older? That’s true. Wiser? I’m not sure that’s a given.”

“Didn’t some famous author say, ‘With age comes wisdom’ ?”

“Oscar Wilde, but that’s only part of what he said.”

“Oh?”

“Yes, the full quote is, ‘With age comes wisdom, but sometimes age comes alone.’”

“Ouch.”

“I hate to interrupt this conversation, but we prefer ‘with age comes better bourbon.’ You guys having the usual?”

“Yes Curly, and my young friend is buying.”

“I bought last week.”

“Yes, but I bought your book today, so it’s gesture of appreciation on your part.”

The Novelist’s Guide to Pittsburgh?”

“Yes.”

“David, that book is free today.”

Free from 12:00 am Saturday May 1st through 11:59 pm Sunday May 4th – all times Pacific Daylight Time

“According to Amazon, I purchased it. You want to see my confirmation?”

“Here you go. A glass of John Howell’s Bourbon, a snifter of seltzer, a glass of ice and three cherries. And a cold glass of Modelo. Now, I don’t care who pays, as long as one of you two mooks ponies up for the bill and a nice tip.”

“I’d say I’ll take the tip out of my royalties, Curley but you’re bigger than me.”

“I like the way you think, Dan. No offense to the old man, but I also like the way you tip.”

“I might not have paid for the book, Dan, but I am enjoying it and I’m here singing your praises. That’s worth something, right.”

“Emotionally, yes.”

“Does anything else really matter?”

“You’re going deep, David. I do appreciate your buying the book, and I enjoy sharing a beverage with you.”

“If you want to add to your enjoyment, we could order some of Teagan’s mushrooms.”

“Why not, I mean that book is still number one in United States Atlases and Maps, albeit it’s also still free.”

“Look out Rand McNally.”

“I doubt they’re worried, David.”

“Are they even still in business?”

“Yes, and I’m sure my brother has a recent copy of their Road Atlas.”

“Did I hear you guys wanting to order some mushrooms?”

“You most certainly did, Curley. David and I would like to share…”

“Whoa, Dan, we’d like to share—it would make our mothers proud; God rest their souls—but we don’t do that well. Make that two orders.”

“He’s right, Curley. Two orders.”

“See what I mean, Dan?”

“What?”

“Wisdom does come with age.”

The book is free until tomorrow at midnight. It will be free again in June when Willow Willers and I release the next Rascal Todd Mystery. That next book is in the series, but it is a stand-alone story. More information about that book will be coming this week. For now, I hope you’ll enjoy two things: 1) The gallery contains more sights of spring. 2) The Thursday Doors Writing Challenge has begun, and we already have some delightful poems and stories. Check out the Challenge Page. My first entry will be published here, tomorrow.

All five of my current books are now available in audio book form thanks to Amazon KDP’s Virtual Voice process. The voice is AI generated, but I can honestly say, it’s pretty darn good. The audio books are reasonably priced (all below $7 US) and, if you already own the Kindle version and want to add an audio version, you can do that for $1.99. There is a five-minute sample on the book page for each book. If you’re interested, click on any of the Dreamer’s Alliance book links below the image or on the link below for my latest book.

  2. Good morning Dan, …. Personally I think David is pushing his luck even I can remember that it’s David’s turn to pay! … But hey ho ! I guess you have humour your elders… even when they are sneaky snikies! Mind you he write about one thing. the I must say THE NOVELIST’S GUIDE TO PITTSBURGH is a beautiful book and reads really well. It’s great to see and read about this unique city.

Oh! Were is Cheryl she has not been around for a few weeks…. Did the boys push her out ?

You are such a busy man with the new book and Thursday Doors competition plus everyday life and still you have manged to take some wonderful photos.. absolutely lovely….have a great weekend. 💜💜

    1. David likes to trick me into paying, Willow, but he’s really a good sort. I’ll catch up with him on the bar tab. Maybe I’ll order a glass of bourbon ;)

Cheryl has been quiet on her blog and social media so I haven’t wanted to make her work over here. Curley likes this shift, but he still enforces her rules about keeping the bar a family friendly place.

This book is out, the writing challenge is underway (the hard part is setting everything up) so I’m winding down to just thinking about the book launch (and a few short stories). I also have a vacation coming up – I know, bad timing, but I need a bit of a break.

      I hope you’re having a great weekend.

    1. This morning, I went around to the porch and snagged a picture of Ms. Bun from the front. Everyone was out looking to be fed. We’re not allowed to sleep in around here.

  5. Ah, my Saturday begins well: thick spring blooms and snark at the bar. A good omen for the weekend. Of course I’m especially happy to see the Beauty of Moscow — that’s just extraordinary. My lilac did not bloom well this year, doggone it. Thanks for the good start to my weekend!

    1. Happy to oblige, Maureen. And I got the list of writing entries in place, and the 2025 challenge on the menu (above) so the TDWC is rolling in high gear. The lilacs are enjoying an easy spring, lots of rain and mild-to-warm temps. I hope your weekend is a good one.

I’ve just picked up my copy, Dan. The Guide looks fantastic. BTW, your link took me to amazon.au. I did a separate search and found the guide on Amazon.com. 🌞 Your photos, as always, are incredibly beautiful. Have a wonderful weekend.

    1. Sorry about the link, Gwen. Thanks for mentioning it. I’ll see if I can fix that.

  10. I’ve never in my whole life heard the entire quote though I’m not surprised. We’d all like to claim older and wiser is a package deal.

If you don’t mind my asking (I get it if you abstain), how is Amazon for a selling platform? I’ve heard mixed reviews about how authors are treated on there but have never personally known one I could ask. :)

    Liked by 1 person

    1. I think we like to leave the second half of that quote out of the conversation.

Amazon is a mixed bag, but overall, I’ve been pleased. For starters, I’d never have been able to put six books on the market without this platform. I think Amazon makes more money than I do, but I’m not trying to fund my retirement. I love writing, and I am thrilled that so many people have enjoyed my books. They’ve recently added the option to create the Virtual Voice (AI) audio books. That’s something I could never afford to do the traditional way.

I like the fact that I have control over when, where and for how much I sell these books. I tried other sales platforms, but I didn’t get so much as a nibble. They own this market, and while I think I should get more money, I’m also trying to keep the books affordable. This book is free today and tomorrow, but it will never be higher than their minimum price. That’s my choice, so I can’t complain.

I do think they could add a few features to the system, but that comes from my developing systems for 42 years where I was always thinking of ways to make things better. So far, they haven’t asked for my help ;-)

If you have other questions, feel free to reach out via email.

      1. Thank you, Dan. I’m glad this is such a positive experience for you! Being able to put six books out for your readers is a wonderful opportunity, and the new AI audio feature sounds wonderful.

David was really feeling his oats today! Congratulations on your latest publication.

Spring is really blooming in your area. Beautiful apple blossoms and lilacs. Bunny butt is adorable!

Old Glory reflected in the fire pit is always a welcome sight. Love this photo!

Happy May Dan. Hope your weekend is relaxing and fun all rolled up into one. Lots of rain in the forecast, but at least temperatures are warmer.

    1. Thanks Ginger. At least that rain will soak into the ground. No need to worry about shoveling it or slipping on the ice.

David was in fine form today. He likes to take advantage of the moment.

The squirrels, birds and bunnies are all enjoying the yard. I will rest easy and watch the rain fall. I hope you have a great weekend.

The break is necessary, but I need to stay close to support the writing challenge. I’ll be missing some blogs and I’ll skip a few posts of my own, but I do have some stories to tell.

I love seeing that flag in reflection.
