Today is Memorial Day in the U.S., the day we honor and remember those who died while fighting to establish and preserve our freedom.

Note: The 5th Annual Thursday Doors Writing Challenge is underway. We currently have 55 creative entries, and they are all delightful. The way it works is simple:

  • Visit the Writing Challenge Page (TDWC)
  • Pick one or more door(s) that inspires your creative spirit
  • Write something, anything, or otherwise create or perform something based on that image
  • Post your creation on your blog and link to the TDWC Page (preferred) or to any of my posts, or email me the link. If I follow you, I might see your post, but WordPress isn’t always reliable.
  • Even if you don’t want to join us, you should visit the page to see what’s been written.

If you need to use email, you can reach me at NoFacilities at gmail dot com.

We’re continuing our series that, for lack of a better term, is called: “Things made of stuff.” If you want to see where we’re heading, you can check out the home page for this challenge.

This week, we’re looking for Things Made of Glass/Ceramics.

My featured photo was taken from inside the Javits Center, a convention center in New York City..

Good luck finding your photos, as you travel or in your archives. That’s how this works. Have a nice week.

  6. Pancakes with bacon! What cruelty! Now I am all about the memories of my mom’s buckwheat pancakes with bacon. They were among the best things I’ve ever tasted. Of course she brushed the griddle with bacon grease before pouring the batter. I almost missed the great glass miscellany because of the buckwheat hallucinations going on. I really like that sneaky photo of the upside-down goblets.

    1. Sorry about the hallucinations. I suffer with you when I put breakfast pictures in the gallery. There will be no pancakes here today, and no bacon. I remember having things grilled or fried in bacon grease. If the Surgeon General ever had home fries, fried in bacon grease, I’m sure there would be an exemption in the guidelines for that.

      1. In the next life, I’m going to demand an explanation for things like bacon grease. It should be GOOD for us, not deadly. It’s not fair!

Love those stained glass windows, but the glass sculptures are awesome. A clock that gives you the temperature as well! Your nieces lamp globe is amazing. That’s quite a collection of old bottles containing chemicals.

Good grief, if those pancakes were any bigger you could use them for throw rugs!

Happy Memorial Day Dan. Warming up tomorrow’s, and then, of course, more rain. 🥴

    1. Thanks for stopping by, Ginger. This was a fun collection to assemble. Of course, I’m craving pancakes now, but I’ll be having toast after my walk.

The previous occupant of my office at work left that clock for me. He said I’d find out why. The office was across from the kitchen, and it was the only clock in the office visible from the hallway. People used to get mad when I shut my door.

It will be nice to see 70s again. I’ve almost forgotten what that feel like. Rain, I fully understand rain.

Have a nice day and a good week ahead.

  11. Gorgeous photos, Dan, but the ‘sneaky’ photo of the tabletop made me laugh. Isn’t it the most fun thing to grab a photo like that?!

That last photo–my kind of photo! I love it. So random. So very cool and interesting.

    1. I used to get so bored at those meeting, Lois.

That bulb had perfect timing. It was early in a Photo-365 project I’d agreed to do with our daughter, and I had forgotten to snap a photo that day.

  13. Excellent photos, Dan! I’ve passed the Javits Center many times while driving in NYC, but was inside only once — in 2008 (I think), when I was a speaker at a cartooning event. While heading toward the exit, I saw “Spider-Man” co-creator Stan Lee walk by, trailed by adoring fans. So, I have positive memories of that monstrosity of a building. :-)

  22. I enjoyed your photos Dan. Glass and ceramic convey beauty and strength in form and function…so amazing how a fragile substance can capture so much light.

I love the 600-year old stained glass windows and the lamp globe and the photo effect you captured of your niece’s kitchen island overhead lighting.

Thanks for some great ideas, the lightbulb and the old pharmacy vials and flacons never sprang to mind until your photos. Thank you.

A blessed Memorial Day to you.

  23. Another charming gallery today’s post, Dan. Thanks for a succinct explanation about Memorial Day. Too often people just look at it as a long weekend with lots of retail sales.

      1. Stained glass is beautiful, but what attracts me to glass is the way light plays on differently shaped glass — like the one of all those goblets on the table. Or etched/carved glass. Even round crystal balls. Anyhow, lovely post.
