Last Saturday, June 14th was Flag Day here in the States, a minor holiday which often goes unnoticed. Each year, on Flag Day, various groups in our town burn the flags that have been retired during the previous twelve months. Burning, in a respectful ceremony, is the commonly approved method for disposing of the American flag. This year, there was an added ceremony. Nathan Nadeau completed his Eagle Scout project earlier in the day. Nathan’s project was to construct a concrete pad, extending the memorial and install seven flag poles.

After the retired flags were burned, a new American flag was raised and it was surrounded by flags for every military service — Army, Navy, Air Force, Marines, Coast Guard and Space Force.

One flag — Every American and six flags honoring every veteran.

      1. I can see that! I particularly like that all branches of the military are represented.

        1. The Main Entrance sign for the park also mentions the Merchant Marines. They paid a heavy toll in WWII, I wish there was some official mention of their contribution, but it is good to see all branches represented.

Oh, Nathan’s Eagle project was worth waiting for, Dan!! So terrific hearing of young people picking up the torch for us!

    1. Thanks GP. Marje, and all the others helping with this launch, have been wonderful. Willow and I are so happy.

Nathan did a very good job raising money and lining up volunteers to help. The flag memorial is a very nice addition to the park. Veterans Park is huge, and the memorial looked more like an afterthought. This is a beautiful tribute.

    1. Thanks John. I enjoyed watching the progress, and I had the opportunity to talk to Nathan and the Scoutmaster a couple times. A lot of hard work went into this.

  8. Nothing going on here for Flag Day. Usually a few neighbors decorate, but this year because it coincided with The Donald’s charade parade, I think people didn’t want to do anything that might be interpreted as support for him. 🤔

    1. The flag retirement ceremony is an annual event in the park. This addition to the memorial was a worthy addition to the ceremony. I think it stands well on its own.

  9. Flag Day! The day when Jack the Ripper cruises for victims in a gray van! At least, that’s what #s2 and 3 Daughters said in their personas as police detectives. They had notebooks full of pictures and descriptions of his confederates (pictures cut from newspapers and magazines) and would knock on the front door to warn me and interview me as to any suspicious activity in the neighborhood. Chilling!

  11. What a lovely Eagle Scout project! I knew about the proper disposal process but had not heard of a community that has an annual ceremony for it. That sounds special.

    1. The burn pit was built by another Eagle Scout, several years ago. The American Legion always had a ceremony on Flag Day, but it was never as special as it is now.

  12. Great work to the volunteers, the seven flags look right at home there.

Love the critters and the wonderful path you constructed.

Of course I must mention the dramatic rain-filled sky you captured beautifully in your photo. Thank you! Have a great day Dan. Cheers.

    1. Thanks Suzette. the rain certainly gives us interesting skies to walk under. Today’s walk was rained out about halfway through. The flags look great on their new pad.

  15. Great pix, Dan, and what a terrific project for Nathan. Well done! Our grandsons are 12 & 14 and very involved in the Scouts; our older grand will be heading off on July 5 for 6 weeks in the Adirondacks as a volunteer counsellor in training. Next summer he’ll be a counsellor.

All the best with your book launch!

    1. Thanks Nancy. Your grandsons sound like they’re taking advantage of a wonderful program, good luck to them. This project was very well planned and carrier out. Nathan did a fine job, and it’s a great addition to the park. The fire pit where they burn the retired flags was also an Eagle Scout project. That was built about 3-4 years ago.

  18. Hi Dan, I’ve heard of this burning of the flags ceremony before. I have no idea how flags are disposed of in South Africa. It seems correct to have a formalised process for this.

    1. It was a great idea, and he chose the perfect location, Jennie. The park is huge, but the memorial was tiny by comparison. Now it feels right.
