Welcome to Thursday Doors! This is a weekly challenge for people who love doors and architecture to come together to admire and share their favorite door photos, drawings, or other images or stories from around the world. If you’d like to join us, simply create your own Thursday Doors post each (or any) week and then share a link to your post in the comments below, anytime between 12:01 am Thursday morning and Saturday noon (North American eastern time). If you like, you can add our badge to your post.

The badge contest ended in a tie, so I will be alternating the badge I use here, but you are welcome to use either of the winning badges.

For many reasons, not the least of which is the ongoing launch tour of the book Willow Willers and I released last week, my mind is still anchored in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania. That book, like all my books to date, is set in Pittsburgh. But, today’s doors have nothing to do with the book. In fact, these doors could be found anywhere.

One of the stops we made while in the Strip District (an old warehouse district gradually being converted to retail and residential properties) was at Bass and Bennett, a retail store specializing in interesting furniture and home decor items sourced from around the world. They claim to be preserving culture and traditional artisanship. Since they encouraged photography in the store, and the store was chockablock full of interesting doors, I’ll leave it at that.

I hope you enjoy the doors I selected, and I hope you have a chance to visit some of the doors contributed by others. Of course, below my doors is a bit of unabashed marketing around the new book, including the short video trailer designed to pique your interest. And, if you’re interested in the latest launch post, Willow and I were guests of author and blogger Marjorie Mallon yesterday.

  1. Hi Dan, I like these pictures. Some of the furniture really appeals to me although I’m not a big fan of the distressed look. I’m more of a Versailles palace beautiful furniture person 🤣😂

    1. That made me laugh, Robbie. Some of these pieces were in the palace price range, but I wouldn’t want a room full of these. I think they might make a nice accent piece though.

  19. Superb doors and photos, Dan. I love the weathered look of wood, and these are all warm and inviting. Love the log cabinet; that is a really cool idea well executed.

The Tuk-tuk, motorized Rickshaw (the first photo) is iconic of the Far East, I love it. It seemed perfect in the setting in the store though, and I love the invitation to photograph at one’s pleasure… most excellent!

Great share, Dan. I enjoyed these. This is a unique store; I have never seen anything quite like it. Thank you for sharing these great finds on your travels.

    Liked by 1 person

    1. Thanks Suzette It was the perfect place to wander around for a while. The rickshaw and sign were right at the entrance, so we felt at home right from the start. It was hard to fathom a complete room full of pieces like this, but so many would make a nice accent piece or diversion. Most were out of my price range. I do like that log cabinet.

  22. That looks like a great store! I also like that log cabinet. When I lived (briefly) in Brooklyn 50 years ago, Atlantic Avenue was full of “antique” stores–I always enjoyed browsing, and was particularly attracted to the Victorian furniture.

I’ve combined my doors with the CFFC prompt this week. (K)

    1. I love browsing through antique shops. The ones around us don’t have much furniture, more odds and ends.

Great job on the combined prompt.

      1. There used to be a good one near here on Broadway, but it recently closed. All that’s left are the thrift stores–useful, but not the same.

  23. My favorite is that little red piece in your header photo. A little beauty! The ‘distressed look’–right up there with ‘shabby chic’ a look that went just a bit too far. Remember antiquing? Years ago, I bought a beautiful table that had been antiqued orange (orange!!). I stripped that down to the most beautiful wood. I still have that table and have to cringe at the things people did to wood. I would have some kind of fun in this shop!

  24. That one cabinet was definitely made to look distressed. I would know — I did that to a piece of furniture, once. I liked it/didn’t like it. I knew it was fake, and I knew that, if I had bought it looking like that, I would have refinished it to look new. Weirdness. The tree trunk made into a cabinet (or do I mean that cabinet made into a tree trunk?) looks right up your alley. I have more Sara in Spain doors this week: https://marianallen.com/2025/06/thursday-doors-more-sara-in-spain/

    1. I understand that. I think if I bought that piece, I’d sand it and refinish it. Some of these would bother me since I’d wonder if they were real or not. remember do-it-yourself TV Shows when distressed was a big thing. I like old/worn furniture, but not furniture made to look old and worn.

      Liked by 1 person

      1. For some reason, it seemed like a good idea at the time. It really wasn’t. I’m not sure whatever came of that piece. I have another piece that I stripped of years of gunk and refinished, and I still have that one.

        1. I took a small vanity desk for our daughter when I was helping a friend clear out his mother’s apartment in Queens. He was going to throw it away and I said I thought Faith would like it. It was brown, but I figured we could paint it white. When I brought it home, we cleaned it. It was white! His mother had been a smoker and it was just stained from cigarette smoke.

  33. Hi Dan, There’s a certain appeal about distressed furniture. I like looking at them, though I can’t imagine a lot of such pieces in my house. After a while, I’m sure they’ll distress me. One or two, would be charming.
It’s nice to see a rickshaw, too, in your pictures :).

  38. My husband and I were frequenters of places that sold the wares you’re displaying. We aren’t anymore because our house has maxed out on room for bulky antique and vintage furniture. We’ve also maxed out on room for small, dainty antique and vintage furniture. We have a china cabinet very similar to the “step up” cabinet, only wider.

I am still sorting through my photos and I’m starting a new blog to write up about the trip. It’ll probably take me years to get to the end we saw and experienced so much.
