Willow Willers and I are continuing our book launch tour of Poetic Justice at Miriam Hurdle’s lovely blog, The Showers of Blessings, today. Miriam is asking about how we got into character for telling this story. It was a fun interview. I hope you can pop over.

Yesterday afternoon, it was 102°f (39°c) with a “Feels like” temperature of the surface of the sun. Although I doubt the sun has humidity in the 80% range. I’ll leave it at “uncomfortable” because I know much of the country is dealing with similar conditions. The weather service has dropped its Extreme Heat warning because it’s only going to be 94°f (34°c) today. Let’s not all say ‘woohoo’ at once.

Anyway, I was sitting outside my shop for a while—it’s surprisingly cool on what we still refer to as Maddie’s porch, as long as that space in in the shade—and I was watching Snoopy. If you’ve been around this blog long enough, you’ve seen Snoopy (feature picture) before. She’s a House Sparrow, and she took over the birdhouse we put up to attract bluebirds. The place that sold the birdhouse said “bluebirds like a deep box but most other backyard birds don’t.” The house even has a hardware cloth screen inside to help the babies climb up.

Snoopy saw that the house was on the market, and promptly stared gathering grass and twigs and filled the house all the way up to the level that sparrows like for depth. She, or perhaps her children, have returned every year for eight years. While I was watching, Snoopy made over a dozen trips to gather bugs and some of the birdseed we put out and return to the house to feed her two babies.

Watching Snoopy, I thought that I really shouldn’t complain about having had to go to the grocery store earlier in the day.

Tip of the hat to Mother Nature for One-Liner Wednesday by Linda G. HIll

I embedded a short video of one of her flights (Note: she’s flies within the first 2 seconds). Be sure to put the sound up so you can hear the babies screaming. The video is a YouTube Short, and they don’t often fit well inside a blog post. If you have any problems, you can hop over to my YouTube site and watch

I’m not posting the trailer for Poetic Justice, but I have a new promotional photo. You may recall I took a picture on the Gateway Clipper last August. With a little Photoshop magic, I added my books to the counter my brother and I were sitting next to. During this heatwave, I updated the image to include our latest book.

Six of Dan's books
The Dreamer’s Alliance and the Rascal Todd Mysteries on “display” on the Gateway Clipper and available on Amazon.

  1. Good Morning Dan and thank you for the wonderful photos… My goodness it’s hot in America…it’s hot over in the UK too. The world is hot and not only with weather temperatures! …Even Mr Trump was red hot yesterday and in his ire resorted to Anglo Saxon language!

That aside as I said your photos are lovely and it was wonderful to take a few seconds out to watch Snoopy bless her ….Nature is at its best when she ignores us humans. 💜💜💜

    1. Everything on this side is hot, Willow, but we’re told that at least the weather is going to cool off. After today, we have three days where the high temp will be about 75°f (24°c).

It was fun to watch Snoopy rushing out to gather food for her kids. It’s what moms do. I’m glad that she’s here, and I hope she appreciates the food and water we put out for all the critters. I’m sure they’ll all like to have the temperature drop for a bit, too.

    1. Thanks Darlene. Snoopy was so funny the first year, when she just stuffed that birdhouse full of grass and twigs. We try to clean it out every year, but she fills it back up with fresh material. I am planning to build a few smaller houses, but she’ll probably stay here.

  3. Well said! Yes, the “feels like” the same as the surface of the sun. I wish you were exaggerating. I like the stripe-over-stripe effect on the flag, and I cheer for people who make flower gardens in little places. A little place can hold a lot of color. The sprinkler looks so inviting! As inviting as the bluebird house is to the sparrow. How wonderful to see the return every year. Those are some demanding kids in there!

    1. I’m glad you like the photos and I wish you didn’t understand the temperature reference so well. Our should break tomorrow, heading into the 70s. Snoopy’s kids are a loud pair, but she takes good care of them before they fledge. Then we’ll see her sitting on top of the house, probably taking a few deep breaths.

  4. It’s good to have a relatively cool spot outside, but that humidity makes the heat so much worse. In summer here, if I’m out and about, if I can park in the shade, I will, even if it means walking a bit. The golf course that our house backs up to sprinkles every evening now and it’s an amazing sight to see so many huge sprinklers going.

    1. My shop and that porch are under the shade of a large maple tree. So if it cools down at night, they both stay cool until 2:00-2:30 when the sun makes its way across. It’s a huge difference. The sprinklers are something I can never quite capture the feel of. It might be because they are in motion, and I miss what I think is the perfect shot. But I keep trying. Thanks for stopping by, Janet.

  5. Wicked hot up here too. 107 in the afternoon while I was getting groceries. My daughter pointed a heat gun at our driveway yesterday, and it registered 147.9. Now, do you want to take a guess whose central air picked yesterday to go out? 🥵

    1. Oh no! I hope you can get that A/C repaired before we get another heat wave. The hard surfaces get so hot. The news was even posting warnings for people not to walk their dogs on pavement. We always took ours out early for that reason.

I am glad to hear that you have a few bunny gardenhelpers “planting” pumpkin seeds for you.
Loved the video of Snoopy and… the sound of birds always puts a smile on my face.
Here’s hoping that the weather cools down to more kinder temperatures there for you.
    Cheers.
Great promotional photo of the your books!

    1. Thanks Suzette. Snoopy was so diligent in feeding those babies when it was over 100 degrees. I hope the forecast is right and that we’re going to cool off starting tomorrow. We’re letting the pumpkin plants have the run of the yard, and if we get any pumpkins, we’ll cut them in half and leave them for the squirrels and bunnies. They were a huge hit lats year.

I’m glad you like the image.

  8. I think you got the right picture of the sprinkler with the blue frame of the goal in front of it. Also nice photo of the flag partially folded in the light.

    1. Thanks Frank. Sometimes, there’s a rainbow in the mist of that sprinkler. I don’t think I ever managed to capture that. I do like this one, and I love that flag when it folds over like that.

  9. I’m glad Snoopy has a permanent home she can keep coming back to every year. She most likely feels very safe in the birdhouse and your yard.

Our heat wave broke yesterday, but the humidity stuck around, so it was still uncomfortable. Overnight, though, turned to heaven and I woke up to a cool breeze through the bedroom window and the weather I love most of all. I hope it gets to NE by tomorrow. I’ve gotten to the point where 75 and dry is plenty warm for me…for biking and gardening and being outside without sweating down my back.

Have a cold glass of lemonade, Dan, and stay cool!

    1. Thanks Mary. 75 is ideal for me. I don’t even mind low to mid 80s, but over 85 is too hot, and when you add in the humidity we normally have, it’s oppressive. I hope you get out on your bike.

  13. Whew, you got way hotter than us, Dan. Too hot!

Snoopy and her babies are so cute. I have mockingbirds building nests in a couple of shrubs/trees in my front yard. The excitement is watching them chase away the blue jays and cardinals who are curious about what’s going on. Who knew birds were so…vicious? Snoopy is such a good mom.

    1. We seen Snoopy chase some big birds out of the area. When I sit outside, the bluejays like to stand on her house, waiting for me to toss them a peanut. She flies right at them, and then chases them for about 50 feet. I want to get here a #1 Mom shirt :-)

  22. I have a very loud bird outside my bedroom window but I can’t figure out where the nest is. Usually there are robins, but I don’t recognized the song of this one. What a treat to have the same bird return year after year.

Everything is lush and green and the animals look happy with that. Since we’re supposed to get more rain with the cooldown, that should continue for awhile. Fingers crossed the weather reports are right…(K)
