Today’s Thursday Doors Recap includes the entries posted on July 3rd and the two days that followed.

A word about today’s bunny. A problem with my point and shoot camera made it unusable. The camera store where I purchased it recommended against trying to have it repaired, but could not offer a replacement (more on that in a future post). Long story short—I know, unusual for me—I purchased a new camera. Today’s bunny is the first photo taken with that camera. Some of yesterday’s photos and some in the days to come are the result of me playing with the features of this new toy.

  1. Have fun with the new camera. I hope they gave you a discount

    1. They didn’t have the camera in stock, or either of the two cameras that were comparably priced with similar features.

      1. They know how to lose a customer don’t they

        1. Even worse. Their website said they had them, but “In Store Only.” Most of the people ahead of me on the waiting list were from out of state, some out of the country, but they wouldn’t move me up, even though I walked in.

    1. You know me, Willow. The subjects don’t change much, but I like taking pictures, even of the things I see every day. The view is never the same.

  3. Very nice shot, Dan. What kind of camera did you get?

    1. It’s a Panasonic FZ80D. I had an earlier model of this camera about 12-15 years ago. It’s a larger format than what I was carrying, but if I want something small, I can use my phone. I couldn’t do that 15 years ago.

    1. I already have about a dozen bunny photos. I have to stash some away for winter.

    1. Thanks Suzette. I’m getting used to using it. It’s a larger form-factor so it will be easier once I get a proper case. I ordered on on Friday.

  6. How fun, a new camera! I hope the learning curve is an easy one. Most importantly I hope you really like it and enjoy using it. I have the Lumix FZ200 and still don’t know how to use it very well. Then again I don’t use it all that much so… I look forward to seeing all the new images you make with it. Thank you for the free book this week, Dan! That’s really generous of you! Happy Sunday!

    1. Thanks Deborah. The camera is a Panasonic Lumix FZ80D. I had an earlier model of this camera about 12-15 years ago. My daughter has the Lumix mirrorless cameral but the menus have a lot of overlap so she was helping me with the learning curve. It’s still a point and shoot, but more features and I can shoot RAW if I want to play more with Adobe.

I wanted to run this sale when Poetic Justice was released, but I had changed the rice prior to release and Amazon says I have to wait 30 days. So, we decided to celebrate the end of the book launch. I hope you’re having a great weekend.

    1. Thanks Maureen. You’re going to see a lot of those little guys. At least one of them had more babies this week.

  8. Was yesterday’s header photo with the new camera? Is it just me or are the pictures sharper? I still enjoy all your photos, Dan. Such a great variety you post.

    1. You have a sharp eye, Lois. Yesterday’s header was with the new camera. My old one didn’t do close-ups very well. I had this one almost inside that grass.

  9. You can also shoot RAW with your phone. I read the comments. My point and shoot is a Sony RX10-M4 Your new one has a longer range. Nice.

    To compare: Panasonic FZ80D:

Strengths: Long zoom range (20x), fast autofocus, 4K video recording, built-in flash.

Weaknesses: No electronic viewfinder, no Wi-Fi or Bluetooth.

    Sony RX10-M4:

Strengths: 4K video recording, fast autofocus, built-in flash, Wi-Fi and Bluetooth.

Weaknesses: No viewfinder, less zoom range (15x).

    1. When I ordered this, I accepted that it didn’t have an electronic viewfinder or a tripod mount The write-up also said it couldn’t focus closer than 10″.

After I unpacked it, I discovered it does have the viewfinder, the tripod mount and it can focus down to one inch.

It does not have WiFi or Bluetooth, but I never used the WiFi capability on my previous camera.

      1. I hope Edge was correct about the zoom. I will ask them at B&H. I may need to update my point and shoot someday and your new camera looks like a good one.

  11. Lovely view with the camera. Truth be told, I can’t remember when I used a full on DSLR. I just use my cell phone which takes adequate pics but if I want something that can do justice to a majestic landscape or low light capabilities and quick firing of the shutter, I have to resort to schlepping one of them. Have fun discovering all your new gear can do for you. So far, so good!

    1. I gave up lugging a DSLR after I messed up my shoulder. Now it becomes painful very quickly. This will do, but I won’t carry it everywhere.

      1. So long as there’s a nearby pocket, those little cameras have a lot of punch to them. Women are disadvantaged since pockets for us are made for looks-definitely not for function! I’m sure you deliver lovely shots of doors, bunnies and as well the other cool things you see with a great photographer’s eye.

        1. This one won’t slip into a pocket, but I don’t mind carrying a camera bag as long it’s not too heavy. If I’m going somewhere where I don’t want to carry it, I’ll use my phone.

    1. Thanks. I like having something other than my phone for certain subjects,

  13. I had Panasonic decades ago, then I had a couple of Sony. I still have the Sony if I want to zoom. Mostly, I use my phone.

    1. When I looked for cameras that were comparable with the camera I had, a Sony popped up, but I soon discovered it’s been discontinued. There are far fewer point and shoot cameras available today than there were five years ago. Phones are taking over

  14. A new camera is always fun with a bit of a learning curve. 😉

    1. I am having fun. I owned an earlier version of this camera, so the learning curve is a bit easier.

  15. You’re right . My Sony is 30x optical zoom. I took a photo of a baby grasshopper the size of a grain of rice and the details were incredible. I can’t find anybody making point and shoot powerful zoom cameras.
