This week, we’re continuing the series in which we’re looking for photos taken from a specific perspective, and I have a little news about that. Last week, I asked for some ideas about adding to this series. I received more than a few good ideas. So, if take a look at the home page for this challenge you’ll see that we have extended this series and added a couple more

This news also adds a small complication for today’s challenge. This week, we’re looking for photos with a vanishing point. Well, as I was searching the archives for the photos in the gallery, I noticed that several of the ones I found could also work for the prompt in two weeks which is “photos from alongside.” Just a word to the wise.

My feature photo today is one of my favorite locomotives, one for the New Haven Railroad. The railroad doesn’t exist anymore but some of it’s locomotives and rolling stock have been repurposed Fortunately, they didn’t repaint the locos. This photo was taken at the station in Hartford, Connecticut. At the time, it was probably pulling a few Amtrak coaches.

Below the gallery is an announcement about sales of two of my books. One book, The Novelist’s Guide to Pittsburgh, is free today, and it will be free tomorrow. Poetic Justice, the recently released novel by Willow Willers and me will go on sale on Wednesday.

OK, let’s take a look at the photos I’ve gathered this weeks’ prompt.

Very cool! I was never much of an artist, but I totally got into the art lesson when my teacher taught us about two point perspective and drawing lines to the vanishing points.

  3. Third attempt My comment was lost to who knows where so I shall try again.

Great photos Dan they all look very chilly like late Autumn or winter…I feel the chill.

I love the steps in Pittsburgh and my favourite ones are Sunrise over Riverside Park rails along the levee and the Ventran Memorial on ice .💜

    1. Thanks for being persistent, Willow. I know how frustrating that can be.

The rails along the levee is my favorite. That was one of those photos where we were there at the right moment.

      Happy Monday!

  12. The idea of vanishing point was a great one. That place we cannot see but know is there is always tickling our imaginations, I think, and the vanishing point reminds us of it. Of course I am partial to the trestle, but all the tracks and roads are beauties. That locomotive image is full of nostalgia — how many vanishing points the railroad brought us as we waited — and waited — to cross! A good beginning to the week — thanks!

    1. I’m glad you enjoyed these pictures, Maureen. I could have filled the page with railroad images. I have to check on my favorite trestle this week. It’s probably well hidden, but maybe I’ll catch a glimpse. I hope you have a great week.

  17. Great photos Dan. You had my attention from the first lovely photo of the GP40-2 loco of New Haven…superb! Love the mood and vibe in the photo of the road that runs along the Farmington River. You captures the misty lighting and the vanishing in point in such a way that the road was full of mystery. Thank you for the wonderful examples. I love the added themes for upcoming weeks as well.

P.S. I love the bunny…he or she blends in very well with the surrounding colors!

    1. You know your locomotives, Suzette 😊 I love the color scheme and the big block letters.. I’m glad you like the other ones as well. Rivers and railroads lend themselves to this challenge. The bunny was pushing it a bit, but so many people want to see a bunny.

  29. Thank you for sharing this wonderful capture, Dan. I truly appreciate and enjoy visiting train stations. They carry a sense of timeless movement and possibility, much like the one you’ve featured here. Your photo brought to mind Edna St. Vincent Millay’s poem Travel, which has always resonated with me. The final stanza in particular feels perfectly suited:

    “There isn’t a train I wouldn’t take,
    No matter where it’s going.”

There’s something magical about locomotives—whether preserved or in motion—that continues to stir the imagination.

[…] Staircases are often fairly obvious as to vanishing points (VPs) whether they are going up or down; in this case stairs leading down to the First World War tunnels in the Somme 1916 Musée in Albert, France.  Up the red staircase at the Brussels Atomium in Belgium. This note on perspective drawing shows a house-like object with three Vanishing Points labeled V1, V2 and the less obvious V3, which is the one that is up in the air somewhere. (H is Horizon, S is the sightline.)In this view of Hong Kong all the buildings appear to be tipping over into the centre because of Vanishing Point 3 (the one that is way up in the air somewhere.)A view of the town hall in Brussels, Belgium. Vanishing Point 3 shows up best in really tall buildings.Or really tall trees.Or in the lines and masts of a really tall ship, this one in the Maritime Museum in Melaka, Malaysia.More of Dan’s CFFC: Images with a vanishing point.
