Badge entry Ritva
Ritva at Ritva Sillanmäki Photography

Welcome to Thursday Doors! This is a weekly challenge for people who love doors and architecture to come together to admire and share their favorite door photos, drawings, or other images or stories from around the world. If you’d like to join us, simply create your own Thursday Doors post each (or any) week and then share a link to your post in the comments below, anytime between 12:01 am Thursday morning and Saturday noon (North American eastern time). If you like, you can add our badge to your post.

The badge contest ended in a tie, so I will be altering the badge I use here, but you are welcome to use either of the winning badges.

Last week I shared doors from the Fire Department’s annual carnival. On the last day of the carnival, there’s a parade. Fire and rescue equipment, other vehicles and marching units keep our attention. I can’t add much more than what’s in the captions, just that I do love a parade.

I hope you enjoy the photos, and I hope you will take a few minutes to view the photos from other participants.

If you are in a hurry and don’t wish to scroll through the comments, click to Jump to the comment form.

That’s right, Poetic Justice is on sale today for 99¢ at Amazon.

If you haven’t seen it yet, check out the trailer below. Also, although I don’t usually post on Fridays. I will alert you tomorrow to our final launch tour stop at the blog of Jan Sikes.

Also if I recall correctly you have had occasion to one of these vehicles in the past and at one of these events! … Thank goodness for all emergencey services. 💜💜

    1. Haha – yes, it was after this event that I needed to services of the ambulance. I felt instantly better when they arrived to help me up, stop my bleeding and transport me to the hospital. You hope you’ll never need their services, but when you do, you realize just how wonderful they are.

    1. Thanks Wayne. Years ago, almost every volunteer company had a carnival and a parade. There aren’t many left, but ours is still going strong. The community supports them for this, as they support us all year long.

  11. Nice little parade. There are so many towns that rely on volunteer firemen. When driving I sometimes see them on the roadside asking for donations. I think emergency services and medical care should be covered by our taxes. I might be labeled a socialist.

    1. In addition to everything else they do, I don’t think they should have to raise money for operations. The carnival is for the non-functional aspects of the department. We also contribute directly. The cost of replacing the volunteers with a paid department would shock the crowd who would call you a socialist.

      1. I know. We complain about lack of services but do not want higher taxes like the French or Italians pay. They also get a month or more vacation. Free education, etc…

  17. This parade goes through a neighborhood? That is so nice. All of our parades are downtown–same route, same parking problems. I wish we had something like this.

    1. Other parades go down Main Street, but they park the fire trucks near the carnival for the evening. This one always comes up this street. No one seems to mind.

  18. One of my favourite annual reads, Dan, I love these trucks, and I love the carnival culture you present. You answered a question I had in my mind – what happens if there is an emergency during the parade?…

This week I have doors from a small town in Surrey called Godalming: https://scooj.org/2025/07/10/thursday-doors-10-july-2025-doors-of-godalming/#Godalming#Surrey#UK

  19. Thank you, Dan, for the great photos and for honoring the work and importance of these services and their staff.

I love the old-style fire truck. I have not seen one like it before… Superb.

The East Hartford Engine 2 is a fine-looking machine, a perfect Fire-Engine Red from my memory at least.

The weather and sky looked quite amiable for a parade, and what a good turnout too.

I hope you have a great weekend. Cheers.

    1. Thanks Suzette. The parade was great. I felt bad for the marchers, it was 87°f (31°c). But they marched to a non-stop applause. I love seeing the equipment. They certainly keep those machines in top quality condition.

  20. I love the antique truck, of course — what personality in that! But my favorite photo is the one with the fire department marching; in that one, there’s a better view of the house on the other side of the parade. To me, that house and the flag being carried by is pure Norman Rockwell, and I am a big fan of Norman Rockwell. I want to be reminded of ideals! I think Rockwell would also have included the three kids at the curb in the first photo, with one covering his/her ears and another apparently yelling back at the siren. It’s not a parade without kids. Thanks, Dan — this was fun.

    1. I’m so glad you liked these pictures, Maureen. I think you’re right, the parade needs the kids. We are so proud of this crew. They provide such an important service to our town, and they backup the fire crew at the airport, which is a huge responsibility. They train every year for that. I like Norman Rockwell, too, and I do think he’d include those kids. I hope you have a nice weekend.

  21. I love a parade as well. My favorite are all the red fire trucks especially that vintage one. I just love they way they folded up the hoses back then and how they filled out the whole back of the truck bed. Great images. It looks like it was a great parade.

    1. It was a very nice parade, Deborah. I like the antique truck, and the fact that they keep it road ready. As long as they have this carnival & parade, I’ll walk over to support them.

    1. It’s so much fun, Ally. The departments in the area support each other’s parades, and we do our best to support the department. The turnout was great considering it was 87 degrees. I felt bad for the crews that were marching.

    1. That’s a different kind of parade, Liz. I hope they got the driver off the street. This parade is walking distance (I walk to that park every day) so it’s fun and easy.

  25. Dan, this parade was every bit as much of a delight as I expected. I can’t help feeling sorry for the firemen marching in those dress uniforms in that heat though. I never tire of seeing the antique fire truck. That huge yellow truck, all shiny and clean for the parade — that’s fabulous. Just the idea of it gives a personality to the truck. Thanks for letting us be part of this fun. Hugs.

    1. Thanks Teagan. I’m glad you enjoy this. I hope I never wear out the welcome for these posts, but I get excited by the carnival and especially the parade. It’s hard to get a dump truck up to parade quality. Those guys did a great job. I, too, felt bad for the marching units. 87 degrees is tough marching weather.

    1. The young kids were having a great time before the parade started, running around and playing tag (it was 87 degrees, but that didn’t seem to bother them). Of course the marchers and the firemen toss candy to the children as they go past.
