Happy Saturday. Today marks the end of a busy week, and I feel like I need a few minutes to relax, share a cold beer and catch up on the world. David and I are here at the bar for our regular weekly meeting and drink. We are welcoming a break from the obsessive heat wave and a nice cool breeze. Perfect weather to generate a little hot air between friends. Linda has given us a prompt to work into our conversation. I’ll see what we can do with that.
Your Friday prompt for Stream of Consciousness Saturday is “chip.” Use it as a noun, use it as a verb, use it any way you’d like. Enjoy!
Stream of Consciousness Saturday by Linda G Hill
If we were having a beer, you’d be worried about the pizza supply.
“I think I have a bone to pick with you, Dan.”
“Some would say good afternoon, David. Didn’t your mother teach you any manners?”
“Don’t bring my mother into this, God rest her saintly soul.”
“Don’t bring God into this. What’s got you in such a twist?”
“You had pizza. You had pizza here at this bar, and you didn’t invite me to join you.”
“David, we’re friends, but it’s not like we’re married.”
“Do you deny having a pizza here?”
“Yes and no.”
“Don’t! You know I hate that expression.”
“I know. That’s why I said it. You see, I took a pizza home for dinner on Thursday. We hadn’t had pizza in a while, and my wife was looking forward to it.”
“Hold up, guys. Let me sell some liquor before you start marking your territory.”
“Hi Curley. Were you behind the bar when Dan was here for pizza?”
“Yeah. What’s that make me, an accessory after the fact? He often gets a pizza to go on Thursdays. Is that a crime?”
“In a way, yes. It means we won’t have pizza today.”
“Are you kidding, David? I had two slices of cold pizza for breakfast. We can have pizza today.”
“Are you sure, Dan?”
“Sure, I’m sure. Curley, set up a John Howell’s Special, pour me a Modelo and toss a meat-lover’s pizza in the oven.”
“Done and done.”
“That’s generous of you, Dan. Thanks.”
“Correction, it’s generous of you, David. It’s your week to buy.”
“Oh, that’s right. Oh well, too late now, unless you’d like to chip in something.”
“I’ll stick with free.”
“So, how long were you here on Thursday?”
“Just long enough for the pizza to cook. I got here late. I spent the morning waiting for my car to be serviced.”
“The whole morning? What all did they do?”
“Oil change, filters, tire rotation and brakes. It took a little over four hours.”
“Wait a minute. If you had your car in for service, you stopped at Great River Park and then had breakfast at Maddie’s—didn’t you?”
“Of course I did.”
“So, you had breakfast at Maddie’s and pizza—in the same day?”
“Yes, but I didn’t eat as much pizza as I normally do.”
“Hence a couple slices of cold pizza for breakfast. You’re not helping your case.”
“You two hens still at it? Your pizza will be ready in a few minutes. You want to add some fuel to this fire in the form of another round?”
“Why not, Curley, why not?”
