SoCS by Linda G. Hill

If we were having a beer, we’d be trying to stay focused.

“Good afternoon, Dan.”

“Hi, David. I’m glad you like sitting inside on these hot days. Just looking at the people on the patio makes me sweat.”

“I’m going to get enough sunshine and fresh air on vacation, Dan. I don’t need to start early.”

“So, you guys are both leaving me? Are you going away together?”

“Normally, I’d chastise you not to be absurd, Curley, but in this case, whatever Dan is planning to do will be better than what I’ll be doing.”

“The suspense is killing me, David, but before I ask, can I set up some drinks?”

“Yes, our usual, please.”

“And, I’ll be picking up the tab today, Curley.”

“That’s good news, Dan. Here’s your Modelo. David, I’ll be right back with your John Howell’s Special.”

“I read that you’re suspending Thursday Doors for two weeks, Dan, are you going away that long?”

“No. I will be in and out during the next two weeks, but I don’t want to worry about blogging.”

“Here you go, David. A glass of bourbon, a snifter of seltzer and a glass of ice. And, cherries, I didn’t forget the cherries.”

“Thanks Curley. Cheers Dan.”

“Cheers. I have to ask, it sounds like you’re not looking forward to your vacation. What’s up with that?”

“Relatives.”

“Yours?”

“No. My wife’s. They’re having a family reunion to celebrate her mother’s birthday.”

“Can I assume it’s a big one?”

“Dan, when you get to be my age, they’re all big ones.”

“You shouldn’t talk like that, David. You’re in good health.”

“Dan, I sold financial products for a living. I spent my career knowing when people are ready for their dirt-naps.”

“An industry term?”

“We do tend to have a callous disregard for the subjects of our analysis.”

“So, I take it your mother -in-law is beating the odds.”

“She is. One century above ground.”

“That sounds like a good reason to celebrate.”

“It would be, if her birthday was in January, or if she lived in Maine.”

“Florida?”

“Yes, near Orlando, of all places.”

“I once spent six months—April to October—flying back and forth to Orlando. I was the only guy on those planes not going to Disney.”

“That must have been rough, Dan. My wife doesn’t want to fly.”

“You’re driving to Florida? In August?”

“It gets even worse. When she found out we were driving, my sister-in-law invited herself to ride with us.”

“The one you don’t like?”

“You’d have to be more specific, Dan. My wife has three sisters.”

“Do you get along with her husband?”

“Yeah, but that lucky S.O.B. is having a hip replaced.”

“He scheduled that during this trip?”

“It was scheduled before my wife’s youngest sister cooked up this idea. His surgeon is booked. No way to avoid it—so he says.”

“Well, if I drive anywhere, I’ll be driving alone.”

“I envy you your nice quiet ride.”

“How long will you be in Florida?”

“Not counting the time driving, a full week.”

“Will you be visiting the parks?”

“No! My wife and her family can handle that alone. I’m going to golf with some of the guys, and I’m going to tour the Space Center.”

“I did that years ago with my friend David, the one from England. That’s a fascinating tour.”

“I might even book a night in a cheap motel. Starting today, there are three scheduled launches at the Cape. We’ll be there for two of them.”

“Anything to get away from the crowd, huh?”

“One of my wife’s nephews might tag along. He’s a geek like you, works in IT, loves science.”

“A geek like me? You’re the one going to the Space Center, David.”

“I’m doing it to get away, Dan, but I’ve been reading up on these launches, in case I have to defend my decision.”

“Curley, how ‘bout we send David off with an order of Teagan’s mushrooms and another glass of bourbon.”

“Coming right up, Dan!”

I will be taking a blogging break from now until August 13th. I will publish the Thursday Doors recap for this week (tomorrow), and I will post the Cee’s Fun Foto Challenge prompts, but my presence will be limited. I will also hang a placeholder post each Thursday for the folks who don’t like to miss a week of doors. I might see you at your blogs, but I’m not making any promises.

Willow and I have been happy to see some wonderful reviews of Poetic Justice. I put together a happy little video to share some of them. It’s included below the gallery.

  2. Good morning Dan you have got to feel sorry for David! …he really doesn’t relish his in-laws!

I am sure your break will be much more restful and enjoyable! The photos are lovely today the sun through the woods and the river views are great. The one of the plane is excellent too the pattern effect of the window took my eye.

Have a great weekend and enjoy your break! 💜💜

    1. Thanks Willow. I hear that plane coming and I always want to grab a camera and run. I’d never get outside while it’s still in sight, so I just snapped through the screen.

I hope David can regale us with tales from the reunion when we return. A 1,200 mi (1,931 km) road trip might drive him around the bend.

      Have a great weekend.

      1. It’s a great shot I like the blind pattern on it! It almost impossible to catch things like that… Like when all those years ago Concord use to fly right over our house in and out of Heathrow daily…we never once did …not even the three that came home to Heathrow when the were grounded forever!

Have a good weekend too 💜

        1. The runway that goes over us is the only one open this summer, so I thought I’d have lots of opportunities to catch these guys taking off. Then most of them were deployed to the Middle East. They say that was planned a long time ago…

  7. Clever video! I’m beginning to look forward to the times David has to deal with his wife’s relatives — he’s hilarious. If you ever do a post about vanishing points, you can sure use that one of the bleachers. For some reason, I like that. Enjoy your break. I think I can understand the need to tune out blogging and listen more to the grass growing.

    1. Thanks Maureen. It’s funny, the Fun Foto Challenge featured vanishing point photos a few weeks ago. I wish I had had this one. There was something about the wet rusty benches that caught y eye. I am looking forward to some time away from a screen and a keyboard, but I might show up in the comment sections.

  9. Great way to present reviews in video format, Dan…a unique and first-class idea! I enjoyed it.
Loved all the critters and close-ups. Fantastic photo of the bee on the bee-balm. Superb photo of the bleachers, excellent point of view angle. I felt as though I was sitting right there.

Wonderful image of Smokey, and the bunny looks frozen at attention, listening intently, so cute.

Enjoy your vacation and time off, Dan. I hope the days cool down a bit to gentler temps there. It is already cooler here as per usual. Summer is rarely a swelter (or at least for very long) here in the Northwest.

    Safe travels, Dan.

    1. Thanks Suzette. I’m glad you enjoyed the video. I had fun making that. The critters get themselves out early on these hot days. We’re always amazed at how in-tune they are with the weather.

We have some very hot weather ahead, but that’s in keeping with late July and August. We’ll keep the critters fed and the water bowls filled.

I’m glad you liked that photo of the bleachers. That’s one that I’ve tried to get in the past. I like the way it turned out.

      1. You are right about the critters’ keen sense of changes in the atmosphere, amazing how they do that. Bless you for looking after them so well. Cheers.

    1. I went to a tech conference in Orlando about this time of year, many years ago. The real David, my friend/coworker from England was there, and it was like a steam bath the entire time. We did visit the Space Center, and it was a little cooler over there.

      Stay cool, GP.

  13. Dirt naps…you have to appreciate the technical terms of the industry. 😂 I used to have to go to Orlando every year for work–that place is never not a white-knuckle ride. Oh, David–I hope he has details about the family reunion. I am both dreading his trip and looking forward to it. He tells a story like only David can tell a story. Enjoy the break, Dan.

    1. I hope to hear about his trip when we return to the bar, Lois. I’ve been to Orlando too many times in the summer (for business). One more reason to be happy with being retired.

  14. The heat and humidity are here too, Dan. The older I get, the less I want to tolerate it. I much prefer 70’s, maybe 80, and low humidity, but it is whatever Mother Nature and weather patterns throw at us.

I was going to write a post for today, but life got in the way again. It would have been about algebra…funny story!

Enjoy your blogging break! Whatever you are doing, I hope it is enjoyable.

You will probably be able to write a book about David’s trip to Florida and his wife’s family. It would be an immediate best seller because David is a master at explaining his wife’s family!

Good grief, could Smokey have found a smaller patch of shade? Haha.

Flowers are beautiful, and thanks for sharing what the Milkweed produces. Just awesome.

    Nice shot of flags.

Have a restful, happy blogging break Dan. Your computer will likely enjoy the rest too! See ya when you get back!

    1. Thanks Ginger. I had to laugh when I saw Smokey sitting in the patch of shade, but he didn’t want to move. I tossed him a peanut and he sat in that shady spot and ate it.

I’m looking forward to what we can come up with when David returns.

I am also looking forward to a break.

You take care of yourself while I’m gone.
