Over a year ago, one of the woodworking supply stores I buy from introduced a shop vacuum attachment for a drill press (see above). It was interesting and it seemed to address the problems inherent in collecting debris from a drill press. While the action is always in the center, the center isn’t always easy to get to. Between the thing being drilled and the things holding it in place, there often isn’t room for a dust collection nozzle to be safely secured. The unit looked good, but I thought it was overpriced at $65, and I was sure I could rig something up on my own.
About a month ago, they put this item in a clearance sale for $19 and I bought one.
It attaches to the column of the drill press with two hose clamps that you weave through slots on each side of the base (top and bottom). The description said the kit included two different size clamps to “fit most popular drill presses.” Well, despite my drill press being quite popular, neither set of clamps worked.
Since I wanted to use this contraption, I secured it with nylon zip-ties. Then I searched our local hardware store for the right size hose clamp—none to be found. The slots are narrow and none of the clamps would fit through them.
Fast forward to last week. I was cleaning my workshop, and I decided to get rid of some boxes of things I’ve had forever. One box contained items I brought home from my father’s shop over 40 years ago after he passed away. Some of the items were things he probably should have thrown away 25 years before that. Still, having inherited his packrat genes, I inspected everything. You’ve probably guessed where this is going—in the box were two hose clamps that were the perfect size!
“Happiness is finding exactly what you need in that box of crap you’ve been meaning to throw out for years.”

My wife felt that I had been neglecting the bunny lovers. So, she took a few photos and a video. The video is below the gallery.
