This week, we’re continuing our series where we’re looking for photos taken at different points during the day. This challenge was suggested by one our readers. In fact, that reader was none other than Willow Willers, the delightful co-author of our recently published novel. If you want to see the future ideas for this challenge, take a look at the home page. If you want to know more about Willow’s author role, I’ll be sure to stick some promotional material at the end.

For this series, the day has been divided into six blocks of time, so we need to be careful not to overlap. Last week, we covered morning. This week, dusk, then we’ll finish the series with night. The timing doesn’t need to be precise, I mention this only to help you prepare for the upcoming weeks. Dusk is a funny time to pin down, it’s defined as the end of twilight, the time just before night. I know, that doesn’t help.

My feature photo today is one of the adult bunnies that lives under my workshop. It’s dusk, or close to it. The light is from a floodlight on the side of our garage.

OK, let’s take a look at the photos I’ve gathered this weeks’ prompt. I chose pictures from events that I think took place at or near dusk.

And now for that shameless advertising our recent book. Recently, we added a new video (below) where we’re sharing some of the comments people have made in their reviews of Poetic Justice.

  1. Interesting time of day. Not sure I’ll have anything but will look about.
That little chapel has a sweet if not bewildered look

    1. I”m sure you have something, Brian. I struggled to find photos I knew I took at night because I have a lot of early morning photos, and it’s tough to discern dusk from dawn. The little chapel is one of my earliest entries for Thursday Doors. Norm was in charge and I usually posted one photo – can you imagine?

      2. A bit of a think and suddenly more than one photo came to mind

Afternoon (the blue hour and others)

  2. The photo of the Small House is really interesting. I love the way it is lit. I like the barn as well. Rural buildings make great subjects don’t they?

    1. The Small House is always the first stop when we visit Old Sturbridge Village, so I knew it wasn’t night yet. Rural buildings and historic villages are wonderful places to take pictures.

  3. The photos of city lights at dusk are beautiful, but the first one, with that tree silhouette against that sky and the lone reflection, is exceptional, I think. The other dusk photos seem to have a certain melancholy to them, even the trestle train. At that time of day/night. you can certainly capture a mood. This is like a photo meditation on dusk. A nice calmer-downer to balance morning coffee!

    1. Thanks! Yes, I think these are more well suited to a nice calming cup of tea. Still enough light to feel secure, but not enough to think there are still things to do.

  5. Lovely gallery, Dan. I so love dusk and taking pictures at that finite time of the evening.

    1. Thanks Dale. I’m not usually away from home at that time, but it’s always beautiful and calming.

      1. It seems to hit that time suddenly. The window is so small to be able to capture things. Of course, today’s phones adjust for the light and it never looks like dusk!

  7. Dusk is such a pretty time and your photos bring out the best of the hour. I like the ‘walking home from dinner’ photo. I always try to walk right through the outdoor diners but can never help giving a glance at what everyone is eating.

    1. That’s funny, Lois. My father-in-law would look, and ask people what they were eating and if it was good. If I did that, I’d likely get slapped, but he’d often end up in a conversation with people. I don’t know how he did it.

      1. I love that about your father-in-law, Dan. I’d have had a great conversation with him about the food!

    1. I’ve always been up early, Sherry, but I was trying to focus on the late evening side by the pictures I chose. I’m better at up early than being out late.

  10. Dusk is such a lovely time of day, and you captured it beautifully. Love the small house’ and Capitol building’ photos. The little chapel is indeed interesting.

The kiln is awesome and ‘walking home from dinner, says it all. Perfect time of day for a walk.

  13. Excellent photos, Dan. You captured the mood of dusk very well in the photos, especially the fantastic view of Pittsburgh from the top of Mt. Washington. Love the muted shades of the “blue hour” you captured beautifully and also in the “walking home in Philadelphia” photo.

Of course, I am absolutely delighted to see locos and two of them. Love the CT Train going over the bridge with the loco’s night lights (ditch lings) on!! Superb!

Honorable mention to the kiln…an excellent photo; nice to see this piece of history so well preserved and still in use.

Love the bunny “hiding” in the snow near your work shed.

Thanks, Dan, for the inspiration for this week’s theme.

    1. Thanks Suzette. CFFC has a lot of train lovers, so I know I can include trains without going overboard.

My brother and I went to that overlook in Pittsburgh to try and capture the full moon over the city. The moon wasn’t in a mood to cooperate, but I did add to a collection of night images. I’ll probably use on of those next week when we wrap this up.
