Earlier this month my brother and I spent a week in our old hometown, Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania. I have shared doors from in and around Pittsburgh on numerous occasions, and this will be no exception. Well, that’s not entirely true—this will be a little different. I am planning a rather lengthy series of some very special doors, but I am not ready to begin that series. I also have a short fun series of doors planned before we go back to the ‘Burgh.

Of course I did take pictures while in Pittsburgh and some of those photos include doors, so let’s get those out of the way today and come back for the two special series after Labor Day (that’s a national holiday in the U.S. which occurs on Monday). The featured photo was taken from the West End Overlook.

I have shared pictures from a couple of these places before, but the pictures in the gallery are all new. I hope you have time to check out doors from the other participants. As always, this week’s doors will be listed in a recap on Sunday.

  2. I love how you plan your doors post. Mine are haphazard.

    1. I don’t always plan this far ahead, Robbie but the doors I want to share lend themselves to a larger story. So it would either be a couple very long posts with lots of photos, or a series of short (hopefully) easy to read posts with a few doors each. I might break it up, but that depends on other doors I collect along the way.

      1. I am poor at planning posts. I get distracted by other things and often don’t complete a series. I still haven’t posted all my Japan doors 😉

I’m glad you like the mural. There really isn’t a door there, but I liked it.

  8. The Pennsylvania Macaroni Company? Enrico’s Biscotti? I’ll take some of each, please! I love the picture of Carmody’s Grill — the lights and the lines are great! The photo of the brothers’ bags and baggage certainly seems to indicate you were ready for anything! The only one I think I remember seeing before is the one of St. George’s. Just the idea of a grandparents’ church is a comfort. How wonderful to go back with a sibling.

    1. One of these days we’re going to document the process of eating our way through the Strip District. We won’t be able to do both sides of the street on the same day, but it will cover everything from coffee to dessert.

Driving to a vacation where you’re staying in a 2-bedroom suite encourages a lot of luggage that you could never take on a plane. The long white boards in that photo are some custom extension jambs I made for that door we installed back in May. Transferring them from car to car was so much cheaper than shipping them that the savings probably paid for one of our meals.

St. George’s church is the third version of that church. Our grandfather and three other men built the first church. Our grandmother and her children were instrumental in building the second church. This one was only built after the turn of the century, but it’s adjacent to the parish cemetery where our grandmother and many relatives are buried. We always stop and visit the graves when we’re in town.

      Liked by 1 person

      1. I kind of remember that you visit those graves when you’re there; that must be both sad and comforting. What a family history in that church. As for the eating, I can’t wait for that post! The transfer of the door jambs was pretty crafty (applause, applause)!

        1. I’ll share a funny story with you. We planted some flowers on my grandmother’s grave. When I was digging the holes for them, I dug up two dandelions (roots and all). My brother laughed and said, “You know she’d want those for a salad.” As we planted the flowers, we replanted the dandelions. That’s the way this family rolls.

          Liked by 1 person

          1. I understand that so well! A great family story, and doubtless a great family. Thanks! (And don’t think your grandma doesn’t know about the dandelions.)

  13. What a beautiful night photo of Pittsburgh. The light and the water are spectacular. There is a serene vibe to the whole image. I like it a lot.
I love the reflection of the lamp you captured in the glass above the Eat n Park entrance door, pretty cool effect.

*I notice you have all the essentials on your hotel move-in cart… “lemonade,” water, etc.

Beautiful photo of Saint George Antiochian Orthodox. I love the whole facade… full of balance and symmetry. The door is fabulous!

I am always happy to see street art, love the mural, and the sky looks amazing… looks like the weather was excellent.

Love the photo of the bridge with the buildings and mailbox. A slice of the city infrastructure well captured.

Thanks, Dan, for the amazing tour of your trip to Pittsburgh. Thoroughly enjoyed your pics. Cheers.

    1. Thanks Suzette. I love how you notice things like the lamp reflection that get buried in a busy photo.

My brother and I do tend to pack for any contingency when we’re staying there. Sometimes, if the weather is bad, we might stay in for the day. Other days, we might take a road trip from the hotel.

The mural, and the building it’s on don’t have a door, but I know there are enough lovers of street art here that I’d be permitted that oversight ;-)

My grandmother’s church has been featured before, but it’s a new photo and it was a very nice day. The church is across from the cemetery, and we always visit the graves when we’re in town.

I hope you have a nice end of the week and a nice long weekend (if I’m correct, Labor, excuse me, Labour Day is also celebrated in Canada this Monday).

Love the Erie Hotel. We have an Erie restaurant here. St. George is a beautiful church. Carmody’s Grille looks like a fantastic place. I really like the mural on the last building.

So glad you and your brother are still able to get together for these family/hometown reunions. You always have such a good time together.

Thanks for sharing your trip with us. I’ve never been to Pittsburgh, but I feel I know it somewhat through your visits, and I don’t have to pay for a hotel room and meals, so thank you!

    1. Thanks Ginger. It’s funny, the cart isn’t much lighter when our daughter and I go for 3-4 days than it is for a week-long stay. We like to be prepared, and when you’re driving, there’s that “I might as well take it” effect at work.

I’m surprised that we still don’t mind the drive. It’s only 8-9 hours for me, but it’s 13-4 for him. Still, once we get there, we eat, drink and relax. The ride home is the worst part for me. Pennsylvania is such a big state. I am always thrilled to see the Port Jervis exit 😉

I hope you have a great weekend.

  21. Enrico has a cafe and a biscotti shop?! Sounds delicious! That is so nice to still visit a church from your grandparents’ time. These photos are great, but I am anxious to see the new series.

Carmody’s Grill reminded me of Carmy on that cooking series. Not sure the name because we don’t have any streaming services, but all I know is Jeremy Allen White is a cutie and I would always say, “Yes, chef!” to him. 🙄😂

    1. To be precise, Lois, Enrico Biscotti is a shop that also has a cafe. According to my brother’s sister-in-law, they make the best biscotti in the world. That shop, and the sentiment is featured in one of my books. I think I need to conduct more research the next time I’m in the city.

Carmody’s Grill is one of the places we’ve only recently discovered, but have added to the “must eat here when in the city” list. We added another restaurant during this last visit. We may have to start staying longer.

    1. It’s funny you mention the Target bags, Kerfe. My brother hadn’t seen them before. They haven’t banned plastic bags out there. I think they passed a law, but I’m not sure it’s in effect yet. I have so many because I always forget to take them.

      1. They are everywhere in the city and my daughters keep giving me more because they always forget their bags too. I long ago started carrying one with me everywhere. All these things like recycling that I initially thought would be so hard seem natural now. I guess we are hardwired to resist change,
