I had an errand to run yesterday that took me past my old stomping ground—Great River Park in East Hartford. The park is along the bank of the Connecticut River and the entire length of the park is on the river side of the flood control levee. The park is designed to be flooded and absorb the water that would otherwise flood the city.

The duck in the featured photo was moving at a pretty good clip upstream against the current. Notice that nothing is obvious that indicates how he’s moving.

We don’t always know what’s going on beneath the surface.

Observation for One-liner Wednesday by Linda G. Hill

That’s it from me today, except for those bits of advertising I’m still running.

The book I’m advertising is the recent novel by Willow Willers and myself. Here’s the trailer for it:

  1. I love how we cannot see below the surface, its wee legs are paddling like mad I’m sure. Great photos Da and that leaf most certainly resembles a dragon!

    1. Thanks Wayne. There were two ducks. I wasn’t able to get a picture of them together, but they were both moving upstream pretty fast. Those little feet had to be moving furiously under the water. I’m glad you agree on the dragon.

  2. Bunnies abound. I like the water drop, pumpkin bee and leaf shadow.
One question. Is levy the US spelling? Having an extensive working background in water departments, in Australia, we use levee for water embankments.

    1. Good catch, Brian. Levy is a typo. It should be (and I will correct it) levee. I noticed a couple other typos. At least I spelled bunnies correctly. I wouldn’t want to offend them.

      Liked by 1 person

      1. Never offend the bunnies as you know who else may become upset that you offended the bunnies.
I am glad you didn’t mind. I saw it in someone elses post too and thought that it was a USA thing

  3. The water drop with the underside of the leaf is a beauty. Even better is the lesson from the duck — you are so right that we don’t know what’s going on beneath the surface and we can’t see the current at all.

    1. Thanks. These days, I think there’s a lot going on that we don’t see.

  4. Are your water levels down? Our lakes are down 8″. We need rain.

    1. The CT River in our area is down quite a bit. I think I could walk across it except for the boat channel. It looks better in Hartford, but there’s a series of flood control dams on a major tributary that feeds in between us and Hartford. I suspect they released some water for the holiday weekend so people could use the boat launch. We need rain here, too.

  11. The duck is a perfect example of how much goes on below the surface in this world. Damn scary to think about.

Grumpy cat will never change me thinks. He would make a good pet for David….they would complain to each other all day and into the night!

Love the pumpkin blossom/bee photo. Between the pumpkins and now corn you and the Editor can expect a good harvest this year, thanks to the squirrels!

The leaf shadow is most definitely a dragon.

Nice to see flags returning to full staff.

    1. We cut the pumpkins for the squirrels and bunnies to eat. If we get corn, the squirrels can have it. We planted corn years ago and the squirrels loved it.

That cat would be good for David.

I’m glad you agree about the dragon.

  13. Great fall-looking photos, Dan. I am happy you started with the cat. He looks sweet. **is Dan being mean to you, little one?** 😹

We had to take these color personality tests at work, and it was either the blue or green person who was cool and unruffled outwardly but were paddling like crazy underneath. One person is my department was like that and she was amazing to watch. I was yellow. I like structure, organization and being in charge. What a surprise! 🤣

  16. What’s the Story Morning Glory!

I agree about ducks all serene on top but paddling like mad underneath. When I worked in customer service at Waitrose every Christmas we’d exuded a the calm of a swan taking food orders from irritable customers, “yes of course your festive food will be here for you and your turkey, goose , duck or all three rolled into one! ” While under the surface we were paddling like made to keep up??? Yes I get your one liner!

wonderful photos all of them 💜💜

  17. Thanks Dan for the words of wisdom in your one-liner response. Beautiful calming photo of the duck in the water, but as you noted so well, all is rarely, if ever, as its seems on the surface.

Loved all the photos of the flowers, the leaf…aka dinosaur silhouette, and the critters being their respective selves. The morning glory photos are both beautiful, as well as the close-up of the water droplet…superb.

Great capture and moment with the bee in the pumpkin flower.

And nice to see the critters helping out with some garden chores like pruning, etc. Smokey is so adorable.

Thanks for the great photos as always, a pleasure to see the critters and visitors in your yard or on your walks.

    1. I’m glad you enjoyed this, Suzette. We’ve been puzzled by an almost total lack of birds these past few days. We can’t imagine what’s keeping them away as we’ve changed nothing. The squirrels are still here.

  23. It’s fun to see the early fall photos from your area – and fun to see Smokey is still around and the Jinx lookalike. Yep, that’s a dragon for sure! I heard recently that you can make friends with crows (by feeding them). I’ve been trying that and we have two who keep returning. We’re not friends yet, but they do seem to think the lady with the chicken bone scraps is kinda cool. LOL

PS – LOVE the trailer for your book – it is great and so is the book! You and Willow did a wonderful job.

    1. Thanks Shelley. I think the crows like us. They sometimes walk around the yard looking for food, and then we put some out for them. They say they can remember faces, and they remember people who are mean to them – we won’t be, and I’m sure you won’t be. I rather have them as friends.

I’m glad you’re enjoying the book.

Yes, I enjoyed the books so much! Thank you for writing them!

        1. :) That makes me feel so good. We just caught a mouse. I’m not sure who ended up with it, but I’m sure someone did.

          Liked by 1 person

          1. On another mouse story, I captured one in the trap, but it didn’t die right away. After about 6 hours, I checked back in the yard to see if it died in the trap, it was still alive, so I opened the trap, and it scrambled off in the grass. So, I thought, “Good for you, just don’t come back to our house.” A half hour later, I saw the crow on our fence with the mouse in its beak – ’tis the circle of life, I guess. 🤷‍♀️

            Liked by 1 person

            1. Yeah, it’s sad when we have to put the mice out, knowing that they will die from the cold or get eaten, but they can’t stay on our porch because the next stop will be in the house.
