This week, we are starting a new series. I want to thank Willow Willers for suggesting the series we just finished, and I want to thank everyone who participated. Thanks for working through the various portions of the day. We’re moving on to a challenge that was suggested by another dear blog friend—Mary from Mary J Melange.

Before we get to my photos, I have a question for the participants. Pictures of our hobbies might be a challenge for some people who have more than one hobby. My original plan was to suggest that if your primary hobby is photography, you could share any photo(s) you like. Then I thought, wait a minute, everyone who joins us must have an interest in photography. So, if you’d like to run with this challenge for two weeks, let me know in the comments.

If you want to see where we’re headed next take a look at the home page.

My feature photo today shows two of my hobbies—woodworking and writing. I made the bench and I wrote the books. I remind you often enough about my books, so today I will focus on woodworking in the gallery.

Let’s take a look at the photos I’ve gathered this weeks’ prompt. I chose pictures I know were taken during the night.

And now for that shameless advertising our recent book. Recently, we added a new video (below) where we’re sharing some of the comments people have made in their reviews of Poetic Justice.

  1. I really like the dark table with the drawers. Your woodwork is excellent. Two weeks of hobbies is good for me. Some theme suggestions: windows, through a window, famous buildings, night life, on the street, churches and cathedrals. Street art

    1. Thanks Robbie. That table is my favorite piece.

After hobbies, we have two weeks of photos that are framed by something. Famous buildings is a cool thought, churches and cathedrals, too. Street art would be fun. Thanks for the support.

  2. Hi Dan, your creations are amazing. Love the centre table, table with drawers, desk. It must make furnishing your home so easy to be able to make anything you want. I would love to have one of those desks or chairs.
Hobbies sounds good. I had actually sorted pictures of dawn and dusk, sunrises and sunsets for the previous challenge but missed sharing it. Looking forward to taking part in this one. I like Robbie’s suggestions.

    1. Thanks Smitha. The little table is my favorite piece. The problem with furnishing our home is that it’s small, and I’ve just about run out of room. I do have a list of projects though. I’ll be able to stay in the shop for a while.

I think we’ll go another week with this one.

  10. Your woodworking skills never cease to amaze me Dan. And the Editor knows how to stain! I remember that photo with Mimi! All your projects are top notch. The coffee table remains a favorite of mine.

    1. Thanks Ginger. I gave both coffee tables away. I got a photo from my old boss (he got the table MiMi is standing on). It’s still part of their living room decor. When I retired from working, the Editor retired from staining – especially anything with slats.

I hope you have a great week!

  11. Dan, if I haven’t told you before…I admire your woodworking skills and craftsmanship. It takes a special talent to take a hunk of wood and make it into a beautiful coffee table, a bench or a bookcase…and that talent leads into being able to author not one novel, but four. It’s amazing!

And that being said, here is the link to my hobby post.

    1. Thanks Mary. Enjoying these hobbies makes it feel like it’s not work, and I enjoy both.

I love your photos. You have more than managed to keep yourself busy in retirement. I think you’re busier now.

      1. Ha! That’s what I tell people…I’m busier now than when I was working. Mostly self-imposed, but also enjoyable and it keeps me out of trouble.
My other hobby, one you share (watching our fave football team), will keep us busy until February (I hope).

  12. I have said this before, you are very talented, Dan. These are all superb examples of excellent artisanship. Wow.

I love how you can see a slab of Mulberry and envision something beautiful from it; and then, make it happen! Beautiful coffee table. I like the photo with it in its ‘home’ and the wonderful soft lighting of the lamp. Great composition.

Mimi is ever a star in photos, examining her new perch here. So cute.

Love all the details you add and consider in your pieces, from a host of clamps all in the right places for applying veneer — to designing a full back section for the bookshelf so that it is beautiful to look at on all sides. And what great help you received from the ‘Editor’ to stain the desk…an excellent helper.

My favorites are the Queen Anne tea table (?) and the bench in the feature photo.

*P.S. Thank you for the question. Yes, two weeks on this topic would be lovely!

    Liked by 1 person

    1. Thanks Suzette. The Queen Anne table is my favorite piece. It was truly a labor of love. MiMi loved exploring everything I made. I have pictures of her in bookcases and on top of everything. She also liked to “help” when I was working in the house, but she would steal my tools. She took a small pry bar that we’ve never found. I think it ended up sealed in with the drain I was working on.

I think we’ll run this one another week.

    1. Thanks Sherry. If the interest in live edge furniture had begun 40 years earlier, I might have been able to keep a cabinet shop running. Still, I enjoy woodworking much more as a hobby than a business, so I guess it worked out well.

    1. From what I’ve read on your blog, Jan, he was a creative person. Visualizing a result applies to many hobbies. Making it happen is the fun part (and marketing/selling is the worst).

      1. A pleasure, Dan! I remember one of my relatives was quite the carpenter; I loved walking through his workshop, smelling the wood and shuffling through the sawdust. No big fancy equipment back then but somehow everything he made was a work of art. Your photos reminded me of him. Thank you.

  18. Your woodworking is wonderful! It is always hard to market your book. I find that to market is challenging and not everyone will help including your readers. I guess I feel a soft spot for writers, being one myself. I have published one novel “The Bayou Heist” and am working on my second. A publisher picked up my first book, but fame did not follow. I still enjoy writing and in retirement the husband finishes projects in the house. We might not post many photos, but I am happy!! So are the pugs! Do you write books with another writer? Do you self publish? I would like to try to use Amazon (kindle unlimited) or find a publisher using unlimited) as so many readers like to read using unlimited.

    Liked by 2 people

    1. Thanks! As long as you enjoy writing, it’s a good thing to be doing. I’ve had some success, but I really do enjoy the whole process. All of my books are enrolled in Unlimited, and I’ve also had some success there. I wrote my last book with a co-author (she wrote the poetry and helped guide the story). That was fun, but I’m back on my own for the next one.

      Liked by 2 people

      1. Well, I admire your tenacity in figuring out how to self publish. I will try to enroll my second book in Unlimited as I think my book will reach more readers. Barringer’s was a hybrid model. Yes, you must enjoy your craft and let some things go because with writing, the odds of getting published are great. Enjoy the process! I have edited for a friend her novel but I would have some challenges writing with another as it is a solitary art, for me. Enjoy! Thanks for sharing.

  21. Dan, I never stop being impressed by your craftsmanship. Each one is wonderful. That small dark table is exquisite.

I’m trying to figure out how my hobby (if it’s really even that) could be photographed… especially without showing a photo of me actually doing it (music, Karaoke, whatever). But my mind seems to have latched onto the challenging part of the idea. I wonder how I might photograph soundwaves… Hugs.

    1. That is a challenge, Teagan. See if you can get an app called ‘Decibel X’ it produces a pretty cool graph, but you might have to settle for a screenshot. There are other apps that measure sound in various ways without directly recording it (although your music videos are very good).

As for the woodworking, that table is my favorite and best piece. That was a labor of love.

  26. Lovely examples of your woodworking Dan 😎👍 I always love the grain within pieces of well made furniture and admire the skills that bring it too the fore for us to enjoy. I can’t claim any such skills myself although I’m pretty good with a soldering iron as I spent my working life in the telecoms industry. That also got me involved in computing, so it will appear in my post 😅 Thanks again for running Cee’s challenge for us all to enjoy 👍
