Last week, I asked if people wanted to extend this particular challenge for a second week. Several people did, and since I didn’t take a poll or count the results closely, I decided we would do that. So, this week’s challenge is the same as last — share photos of your hobby.

For some of you, it’s a chance to feature a second hobby. If you don’t have pictures of a second hobby, you’re welcome to share some photos you really like. You’re also welcome to expand the definition of hobby to include anything you like to do.

If you want to see where we’re headed next take a look at the home page.

My feature photo today goes back several years to a point where I might have characterized all of my writing as a hobby. I like to think some of it has moved beyond that stage, but if MuMu were still alive, I doubt she’d agree—she was a harsh critic. She slept on the shelf above my desk and never looked impressed with anything I wrote.

I won’t be around much during the day today, so I might not make it to your posts or your comments until later. I appreciate both, and I will catch up.

Let’s take a look at the photos I’ve gathered this weeks’ prompt. I chose pictures from some hikes I have enjoyed in the past. I don’t hike much anymore, but I try to walk every day and I take pictures of the things along the way that seem interesting or make me smile. Some of the photos are from hikes with our daughter to Mt. Tom and along a ‘rail trail’ in nearby Massachusetts and Mt. Rainier in Washington. Some are from a hike to Multnomah Falls in Oregon and in the Garden of the Gods Park in Colorado Springs, CO. The last two are from one of my daily walks.

And now for that shameless advertising our recent book. Recently, we added a new video (below) where we’re sharing some of the comments people have made in their reviews of Poetic Justice.

  2. That is a good hobby to have Dan. Outside in the sunshine and walking is good as long as it doesn’t rain

    1. Just posting the pictures from the archive made me wish I was back on a trail somewhere. I hope to do a couple short hikes this fall.

  7. Walking is a great hobby choice Dan. I never thought of it as a hobby, but I guess it is. There was a time when I walked 3-5 miles daily! I’m afraid age, illness and needing to walk with a cane has put the period at the end of that sentence! But my new hobby is remembering those walks and how much I enjoyed them.

Waterfalls…they draw you in like a magnet, right? Love them. Great shot of you at the Siamese Twins.

The different rock formations are awesome. Amazing what nature can create without any machinery or technology !

Pretty soon, too soon for me, we’ll be seeing frozen leaves again.

Hope whatever is keeping you busy today is something pleasant.

    1. I try to walk every day, Ginger but not 3-5 miles. I think I usually cover 2 miles. I haven’t hiked much lately. A couple little day hikes, but I do enjoy it.

I love waterfalls. They do draw you in. I love watching them and I really like it when I can get a picture.

The rock formations were amazing to see. I love seeing things like that during a hike.

We’ll both be seeing those leaves turning and then getting frost covered and then snow.

Faith and I went to the Big-E today. It was a good day.

  9. That image of MuMu under the window curtain serene vibe to it…superb capture, Dan.

Wonderful photos all. Love the photo of the trestle bridge, amazing how these bridges are still in use after over one hundred years or so. Great history to them.
Your colorado photos are my favorite with the spectacular rock formations and Pike’s Peak behind you in the photo.
But….the Five-star photo; *Multnomah Falls. It is like something out of a guidebook cover. Superb photography, Dan.

Thanks for the inspiration from your excellent photos and for your superbly generous interpretation of a hobby to (“include anything you like to do…”) Wow!

    1. Thanks Suzette. I miss MuMu. She was a good writing companion, periodically letting me know that brushing her was more important than whatever it was I was working on.

I was happy to be able to walk across the old railroad bridge. As much as I like trains, if we can’t support the railroad, I guess it’s better to create a trail.

The picture at the falls brings back memories of a very nice day. I was in Portland for a conference, and a friend and his wife took me on that hike and then we had dinner at a restaurant at the base of the falls. The Columbia River valley is so beautiful, the ride alone made it a great day.

Sorry I’m so late getting back to you. Yesterday was a busy day, but it was a good day. I hope your week is off to a good start.

      1. Oh, no worries at all, Dan. Blogging is done as time permits, in one’s respective schedule of enjoying life, I feel.

I would love to visit those falls; it’s a pretty amazing scene. Certainly a place to cherish and build fond memories.

I agree one hundred percent, Dan. Anything one can do to support these iconic bridges that helped to build the rail infrastructure that exists today —because of the groundwork those early train systems laid long ago, is worthy of support, at the very least, to honor what was accomplished with… very little of the tech in rail building present today and a great deal of ingenuity.

Thank you for your best wishes for the week. May you enjoy the same grace. Cheers.

    1. Our company had a policyholder (customer) meeting in Colorado Springs. Hiking in the Garden of the Gods was one of the activities for an ‘afternoon off’. I jumped at the chance to be the employee in that group. It was a guided hike, and our guide was wonderful.

  12. Your photos from the Garden of the Gods remind me I need to make a day trip and go down there. I was pleased to learn they allow pets on leashes so I’ll bring my floofy sidekick. Thanks for planting that seed. Happy Monday, Dan.

  14. I used to like walking trails, like through gardens and gorges and such. Don’t know if that would count as hiking. I don’t get around much anymore. Hmmm…. Why do I have an earworm now?

    1. I was just about to yell at you for getting that song stuck :) I’m not sure where to draw the line between hiking and walking, but you know me and rules. If it felt like a hike, you were hiking. Gardens and gorges sound like places you hike. Old Sturbridge Village has several marked “hiking trails” and they are really just the long way around a hilltop. The path isn’t as wide or clear as the regular path, but it’s the same distance. So I think we can be generous with the definition.

      1. Charlie and I walked uphill from Natural Bridge Lodge to Natural Bridge on our honeymoon. Then we did it again on our 25th anniversary. The first time, I was thin. The second time, I was fat. But it was a struggle the first time and a breeze the second time. Country living and running after kids will buff you up, fat or no fat.

  15. Wow, I loved the photos of the rock formations, Dan. That visitors center looks like a very pretty, and pleasant place to… (applesauce… I swear all those “Ps” were not intentional but now that I’ve noticed, I might as well edit “stop” and say) pause. At least I wasn’t saying it out loud, because my computer screen would be spattered… Anyhow, I hope it’s a good kind of busy there. Hugs.

    1. I liked your run with the Ps, Teagan. Yesterday was a good day. Not hiking, but walking around a fairground for several hours. The rock formations in the Garden of the Gods were amazing. I liked seeing them from a distance and then hiking to see them up close. I hope your week is off to a good start.

  21. The opening in the Siamese Twins formation is very like our Natures Window, in Kalbarri NP. I guess the world is made up of the same stuff, after all. I really like the falls in Oregon and don’t think I’ve ever seen a bad picture of them.

    1. I don’t think you could take a bad picture of those falls, especially if you include the bridge. We hiked up to the top, and that was a bit unremarkable. You’d hardly guess what a little stream was about to become.

Seeing formations like those, in other places in interesting. Natural forces at work. Those forces are still at work, but not fast enough for us to notice.

    1. It is a great way to spend a day in nature. I’m hoping to find some (flatter) hikes I can go on with my daughter. She’s normally looking for more challenging routes, but she can take an easy one now and then.
