Happy Saturday! David and I both had busy weeks, but the weather was pleasant and we have been looking forward to a nice afternoon break. The weather is nice enough to draw most of the patrons outside to the patio. David and I have the bar to ourselves. We’re looking forward a cool drink, some fun conversation and working with Linda’s SoCS prompt for the week:

Stream of Consciousness Saturday by Linda G. Hill

I think we can work with that.

“Every seven days like clockwork, my two favorite customers slide up to the bar. Your regular beverages, gentlemen?”

“We could go somewhere else, Curley.”

“No, you couldn’t Dan. You’re stuck in this groove. If you guys ever get self-driving cars, they’ll bring you here on the first Saturday without being asked.”

“That brings up an interesting question. I wonder if you could be pulled over for DUI if you were in a self-driving car.”

“You can, David. Pulled over and arrested because current laws hold the human occupant responsible for operating the vehicle, even if the system is in control.”

“I thought you gave up answering rhetorical questions, Dan.”

“Hard to tell with you.”

“When someone says, ‘I wonder,’ it’s a good indication that they’re just thinking out loud.”

“Yeah, but when a bartender says, ‘your regular beverages…’ it’s a good indication he’s asking you if you want your drinks. I figured since you two had already drifted off into the Twilight Zone, you’d be drinking. Here you go.”

“Curley.”

“Yes, David. Oh, never mind. I forgot the cherries for your bourbon.”

“Dan’s the fan of the Twilight Zone, Curley. I don’t go in much for science fiction.”

“What’s the last Twilight Zone episode you watched, Dan?”

Nothing in the Dark.”

“Wow, Dan, that was quick. Did you watch that last night?”

“No, I watched it on Tuesday. It stars Robert Redford.”

“Robert Redford played in a Twilight Zone episode? He must have been a child.”

“He was in his twenties, but already handsome. He played Death.”

“Death?”

“Death, you know, the Grim Reaper. He came to lead an elderly woman—played by Gladys Cooper—to her final resting place.”

“And she went with him?”

“What woman wouldn’t? He was the most charming Death to ever hit the small screen.”

“Gladys Cooper was in another Twilight Zone episode, right?”

“She was in two others: She played Millie McKenzie in Passage on the Lady Anne, and Elva Keene in Night Call, both of which deal, at least tangentially, with death.”

“Sounds like a nice tribute to Robert. Did you watch anything else? The Sting, perhaps.”

“Wednesday night, I watched Three Days of the Condor.”

“That’s a spy movie, isn’t it?”

“More like an agency thriller.”

“Yeah, well I’m sure it wasn’t an insurance agency. If the CIA is involved, it’s a spy movie.”

“You boys having anything to eat today?”

“It’s been a while since we had some Teagan’s Mushrooms. Two orders of those will be nice, Curley.”

“And another round?”

“Of course.”

“Dan, I’ve lost track. Is it my week to pay?”

“I think so. Curley would know for sure.”

“I’ll pay. I’m feeling generous today.”

“Must be the change of the season.”

“Yes, the last Modelo of summer. I’m surprised you haven’t switched to Octoberfest.”

“Too heavy. Modelo is perfect, year ‘round.”

“You know what they say about variety, Dan.”

“This from the guy who drinks John Howell’s Bourbon with a snifter of seltzer and a glass of ice every week.”

“It doesn’t mean I don’t know what they say.”

“What do they know, anyway?”

I had a little excitement on my walk Thursday. I was trying to get a picture of one of the black squirrels but he was running very fast toward a tree. He ran around the back side of the tree and climbed high into the limbs. That’s when I realized he was being chased by a hawk. The hawk brushed close to the tree and landed on a fence.

Once again, I’ll imagine giving you a choice between watching a video trailer for one of my books, or a video my wife took of one of the bunnies eating some of the carrots she puts out for them. Once again, I’ll assume you’ve all voted for the bunny. Just in case, my books are all here.

  1. The hawk looks distinctly peeved, so I guess the squirrel got away. Happy weekend, Dan xx

    1. I was rooting for the squirrel. I even shouted “Run Smokey!” I thought the hawk might have gotten hurt when he brushed the tree. I waited for a while, and he finally flew off and up to a distant tall tree.

And a double bunny shot. Sweet!

    1. Double bunny and bunny-vid – can’t get any better for you. Smokey sat in the tree for a long time. Probably huffing and puffing.

  4. Three Days of the Condor is one of my favorite movies! I have lost count of how many times I have watched it.

Great discussions as always at the bar. I got a big smile from the ‘I wonder’ discussion. Thanks Dan.

Superb photos, Dan. I love the feature photo among the trees —a trestle bridge, I think.

You captured great action in your photos shared today! The amazing speed of the squirrel as the drama unfolds while being chased by the hawk. Well done, little squirrel! And the hawk, after the fact, looking pensive.

Speaking of squirrels, Smokey is quite skilled to balance on those delicate branches while eating berries!

I loved to see the drama in the skies, including my favorites, Canada Geese, heading for warmer shores. And a great photo of the milkweed looking like a tiny mist had rolled in over the plant’s pods, magical.

Huge Thank you to Mrs. Antion for the great closeup video of the bunny! I love the bunny’s alert (twirling) ears, still fully aware of his/her surroundings while eating carrots.

I hope you have a wonderful weekend, Dan. Thanks for the share.

P.S. Superb photo of the flags!

    1. Thanks Suzette for you kind comments. Yes, the trestle is emerging from behind the trees. This is the first good look at it I’ve had in months.

I tried to put my camera into movie mode as Smokey was climbing that tree. The branches were swaying this way and that until he got settled. He stayed and ate for a while, They love those berries. And kudos to his cousin for escaping the hawk. I know the hawk has to eat, but not Smokey, not while I’m watching!

The bunnies are so much fun to watch as they eat. Not big bites like Bugs, little nibbles but they seem to enjoy each one.

The milkweed is beautiful. So many insects fed on the flowers and the leaves (and the other insects) this summer. It’s a singular ecosystem and it’s been fun to watch.

I hope you have a great weekend!

        1. I forgot to mention that my brother asked me if I had ever seen ‘3 Days of the Condor’ when I was visiting him in 2024. We snagged it off Fandango that night. I’ve watched it several times since then,

  6. When Twilight Zone was new, I watched infrequently, but the episodes I watched often stuck with me, sometimes just in fragments. That one where Death reaches out his hand and says “Mother” (as I remember it) is indelible. I did not know that was Robert Redford. As you know, I struggle to tell a story, and so the stories in those episodes were amazing to me, and still are. In just a half hour, a creepy memorable story. Too believable! That photo of the trestle is one of the best!

    1. Your memory is correct. He does call her “Mother” as she takes his hand, and looks back at herself at peace in her bed. After the long and amazing career Robert Redford had, he had very fond memories of that episode and working with Rod Serling and Gladys Cooper. I think that says a lot about him as a person. In 2014, he reflected on that episode:

“That was really special,” said the actor, “I had no idea that it was going to have that kind of impact. It was a wonderful script. And I had the pleasure of playing opposite Gladys Cooper, who was a wonderful English actress.”

“Twilight Zone was very popular at that time, and I think Rod Serling was one of the great giants of early television. And he had written it. And I just loved the idea of playing that character because he had to be the absolute opposite of what you would think of Mr. Death,” continued Redford. “He had to be kind, compassionate, and there was a wonderful dynamic between she and I because she was so frightened that if she ever opened the door, Death would come in.” – Credit: Remind Magazine

      1. It was exactly a challenge to think of Death like that. Do you remember the episode of MASH with all the dead soldiers walking, walking? Both of those images are indelible to me. The power of story, and the story in an image.

        1. I do remember that episode. There’s a Twilight Zone like that, too. It’s set near the end of the Civil War. Lincoln walks by at the end of the line.

  7. I was out running errands most of the day yesterday, so listened to Terry Gross “Fresh Air” on NPR. It was her interviews with Robert Redford from years ago. She played some tape from “Route 66” and it was funny, but he had no recollection of that TV show at all. One of my favorite movies of his is Spy Games. Rarely do I sit still for a movie at home but that one I gladly do. I think we have Three Days of the Condor. I might need to just sit down and watch it. Have a great weekend, Dan. Protect Smokey!!!

    1. I posted his comments from 2014 in my reply to Maureen. He remembered this episode fondly. I don’t think I’ve ever seen Spy Games. Smokey can come snack on some peanuts after his escape.

  8. I’m glad Smoky gave that hawk the slip. Gotta feel for the hawk though. Lovely photos and memories of The Twilight Zone. It surprises me that I think I have seen every episode. I think I watched more TV when I was younger.

    1. Thanks John. I know the hawk has to eat, but not Smokey, and not while I’m watching. I have seen every episode of the Twilight Zone, and I still watch them. Serling Fest is taking place in Binghamton, NY this weekend. The show remains popular, over 60 years later.

  9. First off, today’s banter was fun. Even Curley is becoming quite the comedian. Good thing he doesn’t host his own show on TV! Lol!

Hooray for Smokey! Smokey can never be anyone’s dinner. Not ever.

Yikes, those Canadian geese must’ve partied hearty the night before. I’ve never seen such a discombobulated formation before!

Good to see the pumpkin patch thriving. LOVE the milkweed pods and Smokey feasting in the Korean dogwood.

Also love the Editors video. Please thank her for sharing it with us.

    Fantastic picture of the flags.

Enjoy the weekend Dan. Apparently lots of rain due next week.

    1. Thanks so much, Ginger. I’m glad you liked this post. I am so glad Smokey got away without becoming a meal for the hawk. There are plenty of mice near the park.

I know sometimes, the geese change formation to let someone else lead, but these guys looked like they needed to practice a little more.

We’ve been cutting pumpkins in half and letting the critters feast on the seeds. They earned the right–they picked good places to grow them (although we’ve been watering the plants lately).

We could use some rain. As long as we don’t have a return to the 90s, I’m fine with whatever comes.

I hope yo have a great weekend.

  10. So, my first question is this: If the car is self-driving and is correctly driving straight within the law, and not swerving, how could its occupant be pulled over for drunk driving? How would the police know?

I think all of your readers would choose bunny video over book video. Sorry Dan. They would also choose Smokey’s escape over the hawk’s lunch. Our hawk family is still around, looking for lunch yesterday afternoon. Don’t know if they were successful, but don’t think I would want a video of sucessful hawk hunting.

Nice photos! Five bonus points for the faux cat shadow photo. Have a wonderful weekend, Dan!

    1. Thanks Mary. I’ll assume your question is not rhetorical. Apparently, you can tell your self-driving car to drive faster or slower than the speed limit. Also, there have been accidents involving self-driving cars and pedestrians, cyclists and even a woman in a wheelchair. OK, enough.

I have no illusions about the popularity of my videos compared to a bunny eating a carrot. Thanks for the bonus points, and I hope you have a great weekend.

      1. Just so you know, I am completely against self-driving cars and especially the self-driving semis. I hope this is a “fad” or an experiment that has too many negativities or losses to continue.
