Bees, bunnies and squirrels are all eating in the yard, so it seemed only appropriate that I could share my breakfast with you for Linda G. Hill’s One-Liner Wednesday. That’s it up there as the feature photo.

Favorite summertime breakfast, sourdough toast with butter and fresh tomato

One-Liner Wednesday

Most of today’s pictures were taken in the yard, where it’s harvest time.

If you want to see Sammy enjoying the fruits of his gardening labor, check out the short (26 sec) video below.

  2. Sammy puts his whole self into meal time, doesn’t he? What a smorgasbord your yard is — and what happy diners! And that is what I call a happy breakfast. It brings a tear to the eye.

    1. He really was rocking that pumpkin to get all the seeds out. I doubt he understands how he’s responsible for planting them. The bees are lucky in that the goldenrod patches bloom at different times. They’ve had flowers, somewhere in the yard since August. I won’t have many more of those happy breakfasts, but I won’t complain when asked to help with garden chores.

  5. From your breakfast to Sammy’s breakfast, great gallery. And your local bees are no fools…they know exactly where to go to fill up their gas tanks!

Love the sunflower thriving in with the tomatoes. The unexpected is so typical in your animal kingdom!

I do love that milkweed. Beautiful.

Happy first day of October Dan. 40*F here. Don’t trip climbing over the hump!!

    1. Thanks Ginger. It was 47 when I left for my walk. I maintained a brisk pace to stay warm. It might be time soon for a vest.

It’s so good to see all the animals eating out there. I’m glad I was able to get a video of Sammy rocking that pumpkin. They really work to get all the seeds out. I think the bunnies come by later and eat some of the flesh. Either them or a possum or skunk. Who knows, but the pumpkins disappear most of the time.

Not sure who planted the sunflower, or who’s planting the corn, but we have several new mini-crops of corn growing. As soon as they get small ears of corn on them, someone eats them down to the ground.

Errands to run today. I hope yours is a good one.

  7. Thank you for the adorable photos of the critters and bees, Dan. Sammy is so cute and Smoky…an elegant pose for the camera!

I love the video; the squirrel sure seemed to enjoy foraging inside the pumpkin half for choice morsels. I noticed that he or she did not once step away from the pumpkinm so I assume it was delicious!

I love your photo of the Milkweed seed pods; they look magical, like fluffy wings ready to take flight.

Lovely mood and colors captured in the morning walk photo.
    Great gallery, Dan.

P.S. Perhaps the bunny is hoping to catch a bit of the water sprinkles as a fun pursuit while you water the garden.

    1. I”m glad you enjoyed this collection, Suzette. Everybody out there seems happy with the state of the yard. Our neighbors might wonder why we don’t have a traditional lawn, but this is a much better alternative.

I’m glad I got the video. He wasn’t giving up until all the seeds were gone. If the pumpkin had been any bigger, he could have crawled inside.

These are the things that make autumn my favorite season.

I think the bunny might like the wet grass. I know they like the birdbaths we keep on the ground.

I hope you have a great rest of the week.

      1. Thank you for tending to your yard in a way that makes it a welcoming habitat/haven for the critters of all stripes.

Thank you for hitting all the right notes of autumn for me as well, seed pods, critters foraging in their changing fur coats, and the colors…outstanding!

And a great rest of the week to you as well, Dan. Cheers!

  9. What a splendid harvest time, Dan. Thanks for letting us join you and the critters for breakfast. By the way, you’ve gotten me hooked on sourdough bread. I had not had it in many years, and recently I noticed it at my grocery site. Yep… Hooked. The video is cute. The squirrels back in DC were nuts for pumpkins too. 🍁 🐿 Hugs.

    1. I’m glad you found sourdough, Teagan. I think it’s a nice treat for breakfast. My brother put a pumpkin out for Halloween last year and the squirrels ate their way in. He left
It there and put a light in it. Carved by squirrel. 🐿️

      1. Hahaha! (They ate the ones in DC. Since I had a shared front porch, and every few years a new neighbor sharing (none of whom could take my word for it) there were many years with pumpkin spatter all over the porch. And some very fat squirrels.

  10. Love these photos! And that sourdough bread looks like it makes for a wonderful breakfast. :) We see more critters moving through our yard right now — deer grazing behind the fence and an enormous groundhog fueling up for the winter under our bird feeder. It’s a fun scene.

    1. We had a groundhog early in the spring but I think he/she was passing through. Ate a lot then moved on. We don’t have any deer around here.

    1. Thanks Lois. He really was excited to find the pumpkin. Hey, he might be the one who planted it. We have no idea who planted the sunflower.

  15. My go to breakfast the last few weeks has been sourdough bread toasted then I smash some avocado and smear it on my toast then top it with tomato slices and salt and pepper. That and two cups of tea.
It’s been a nice treat and break from my usual steel cut oats for breakfast.

Sammy looks like he’s also enjoying his Autumn harvested pumpkin!! lol. That was delightful to watch.

Love seeing your bunnies. Never see ours, only the squirrels, foxes, bear, and a skunk. Been leaving our apple peelings outside, the squirrels pass on it but the skunk will eat it. That toast looks delicious

    1. Yeah, I threw apple bits out. The squirrels picked them up and tossed them back down. They’re oddly particular. Possums and skunks seem to eat anything.

  18. Your garden looks terrific, Dan. And your breakfast – perfect! I share your love of sourdough bread, especially toasted with butter. We’ve lots of bunnies in our neighborhood as well, and at times, one or more will peek into the house at the sliding glass doors. They are precious, aren’t they? 😊
