Happy Saturday. It has been a long week, with ups and downs for weather. Last Sunday it was 87°f (31°c). Yesterday morning when I left to run an errand, it was 31°f (-1°c). But David and I don’t care about the weather. We just come here to catch up and, with a little luck, work with Linda G. Hill’s  Stream of Consciousness Saturday prompt. Linda says:

SoCS by Linda G. Hill

We’re still inside, and it looks like Curley’s still running the patio.

“It’s good to see you my young friend.”

“Hi, David. Any sign of Curley?”

“Yeah, he had to go downstairs to get a new bottle of John Howell’s Bourbon.”

“Oh, I thought he was serving the patio. I saw a couple people out there when I came in.”

“Probable drinking hot chocolate.”

“This is a bar, David. I made them both Irish coffees.”

“Hello Curley. Dan was just asking about you.”

“Well, I have the bourbon. The seltzer and the ice are right here. Dan, you’ll be happy to know that the Modelo keg was replaced earlier. David, here’s your Ikea special.”

“Ikea? You mean John Howell.”

“I call it Ikea because you have the makings of a a mixed drink, but some assembly is required.”

“Put a wrench in instead of a swizzle stick.”

“Speaking of assembly, Dan, how’s that clock…”

“Curley, ixnay on the uestionsqay.”

“What? Why?”

“You’re expecting him to say something like ‘fine,’ or ‘it’s coming along nicely.’ But this is Dan. He’s going to regale you some march through the weeds.”

“Well, I asked the question, and I’d like to hear the answer. So, Dan, how’s the clock coming?”

“David, do you remember what the plan was at the beginning?”

“Yeah, drill a hole in that ugly piece of wood and stick a clock in it.”

“Essentially correct. I thought I would do that, cut the bottom off of that interesting piece of wood and have a desk clock.”

“I take it that’s not how it went.”

“Curley, please don’t encourage him.”

“Too late, David.”

“Well Dan, I think that’s your cue to continue.”

“Thanks. I decided that I didn’t want to cut the bottom off.”

“That leaves you with a big hunk of wood.”

“I cut the back off.”

“Why?”

“I think I can hang it on a wall.”

“Okay, I can see that, but what about the bottom? That’s a lot of wood just hanging there, unless you make it a grandfather clock.”

“Actually, it’s too small for that. So, I decided to put a few drawers in the bottom.”

“How do you do that?”

“Have you ever seen a bandsaw box?”

“Those boxes where they cut drawers out of a hunk of wood? I’ve seen them, but I have no idea how they work—I take it you do.”

“I do, but I have to say, I’ve never done it before.”

“That’s my friend Dan, Curley. Jump right in with both feet and hope there’s enough water.”

“So how do you do it, Dan?”

“Curley! What the heck? Now we’ll be here all day.”

“Hang on, David, I’ll make this fast.”

“Or you buy the next round?”

“Agreed.”

“Okay. First, I drew the shapes I wanted to use for drawers. Then, I cut the side off the block. Then I cut out the shapes.”

“Okay, I follow, but how do you hollow out the drawers?”

“I cut the back and the front off each piece. Then I cut the inside out. I trimmed some wood off the drawer sides, then, I glued the fronts and the backs and the side back on.”

“How do you sand the drawers, Dan?”

“I wasn’t going to go there, David, so, technically, I’m done.”

“Yeah, yeah, Curley, one more round, on me.”

“I sanded the inside of the drawers before gluing the front and back on.”

“Did you sand the fronts and backs, too?”

“No, I wanted them to fit as close as possible.”

“What about the clock?”

“I drilled the hole for the clock, but that’s all. I only needed to know how much room I had under the long hand.”

“So, you still have a chance to screw this up?”

“Ha! Yes, David, there’s still a chance. Thanks for the vote of confidence.”

“You know I wish you all the best.”

If you’re interested in the clock project, there’s a slide show of all those steps. If not, there’s a gallery of photos below that. All of the equipment was off when the pictures were taken.

  1. That is so cool Dan, great job. What handles for the drawers?
Sounds like a good movie title, “Squirrels in the Mist”
The leaf looks like a prancing horse to me.

    1. Handles? That’s a good question, Brian. I was thinking of attaching (how?) little curved bits of wood cut from the inside of the drawer blank. If I can cut them, they would have the same grain pattern, but there are too many ‘ifs’ at the moment.

I’ll let Sammy know he has a hit movie in his future.

      1. How about glued, and screwed from the inside? The same wood is a great idea.
Could even be straight, about 25-40mm, with a little knob on the end =O

        1. I like the idea of a straight pull. Maybe hollowed out on the top and bottom just a bit to make it easy to pull.

    1. Thanks Jo. I love walking past the park and seeing that mist covering everything. It’s funny. The sun rises a bit more and it’s gone.

  3. There is a decided lack of bunny today, but at least there’s a double Smokey.
I love those funky drawers, this is going to be a great piece!

    1. Thanks. The bunnies were hiding this week. I’ll have to borrow a bunny from my wife’s phone for tomorrow.

  5. Delightful exchange of wit and humor with David, Dan. I enjoyed the laughs from your “march through the weeds” and David’s “vote of confidence.” Great fun to read.

Oh my goodness, Dan, your clock is superb. I love all the photos of the precision work you performed to make the clock as you envisioned it. The drawers have a lot of intricacies for sure. Your attention to every detail of the project is amazing and inspiring!

I love the photo of the Harvest moon. That photo of Smokey perched on the house… that whole photo/scene is a heartwarmingly beautiful poster for autumn, for me!

The star photos: are the misty sunrise with the bench, entering the park in the intriguing mist in the distance, and the one with the darting grey squirrel.

Superb photos all, Dan. Thank you for the enjoyable share as always, I delight.

P.S. Thanks for the lesson in Pig Latin. Most excellent!!

    1. Thanks for the lovely comment, Suzette. The drawers are quite heavy with details, including marking the front and the back and the direction they have to face when gluing them back together. I almost made a huge mistake with that one (mistaking lines in the wood grain for my pencil mark).

The critters have gone into prep-mode for winter. The park has a long line of oak trees, and they’ve been gathering acorns.

I do love those misty sunrises. I’m usually surprised because the mist is only in the park. I don’t see it on the way there like you would on a foggy day. I always feel lucky to see the sunrise in the mist.

      I hope you’re having a great weekend!

Thank you for the weekend best wishes, Dan. Same to you. Cheers.

  6. Incredible wood creation, Dan! Can’t wait to see the finished piece. Will you be staining it or coating it with a clear urethane finish?

    Liked by 1 person

    1. Thanks Monika. I will coat it with a Norwegian oil finish (Waterlox). It’s perfect for pieces like this that can’t be easily sanded between coats. It goes on and sinks in. No runs, no drips and with a couple of coats it gives a nice durable finish. It was designed for hardwood floors.

  7. The gallery is splendid, Dan. I like it when Curly pops up just as David is talking about him.

But your extraordinary craftsmanship is the star here. I’m gobsmacked. The slideshow is amazing and a feat of photography on its own. Bushwa! The drawers… Hollowing them out AND making them fit back in… This is brilliant work, Dan. I really can’t say enough positive things about your work and about this post. Kudos! Big hugs.

    1. Thank you so much, Teagan. I’ve always been fascinated by bandsaw boxes, but I’ve never tried to make one. This is a bit of a hybrid, but I like how it’s coming (apart and back) together.

The slideshow was such a mess. The photos are taken in order. They are on my phone and in the folder in order, but when they land in WordPress, they’re like Jacks thrown on the floor. Unless I load them one at a time, i have to reorganize them.

      1. I figured it was a royal pain to make the slideshow — but you did a great job with it. I really am awed by the clock.

        1. I waited too long to do the update. The worst part was that 10 photos were “rejected” when I first uploaded them. Then the page listing which ones were rejected disappeared, so I had to go through my folder and compare the images to the WordPress media library to figure out which were missing.

  10. Awesome project for someone with awesome talent for wood crafting….and that would be you! The drawers absolutely fascinate me. Only you would even think about drawers and then go to work creating them.

LOVE all the misty photos. You must be happy to be able to see your trestle again!

That leaf? I see a horse rearing up with an unusually long tail and a child on his back. Super shot of the Harvest Moon!

Well, apparently we’re getting more rain than we bargained for this weekend. Stay safe and dry. I’ve already made sure we have nothing outside that the wind could turn into flying missiles.

    1. Thanks Ginger. You and Brian have teamed up again on that photo. I didn’t think about maybe there being a kid on the back. That could be.

The misty views are a favorite sight of mine, as is that trestle. The best would be mist around the trestle with a train coming through. I have to work on that.

I’ve always been fascinated by bandsaw boxes, but I’ve never tried making them. I like the way these turned out, and I like not having to cut that hunk of wood in half.

Stay dry and enjoy the weekend.

  12. Now that’s a major project. My husband’s dad spent years in his workshop creating things from wood — he made us a beautiful quilt rack and table! He doesn’t do it much in his older years. I hope the memories bring him joy.

  13. The misty mornings look lovely. The drawers was a neat idea and it looks like it’s going to be a neat clock with more function than just telling time. What kinds of trinkets and things do you imagine storing in the drawers? Is the bottom one big enough for the spare or other car’s key fob?

    Liked by 1 person

    1. Ooh, that’s a good idea, a spare key or fob would fit in there. I don’t think they are very practical, but I do like the way they are turning out.

I love seeing the mist rising in the park at sunrise. I don’t see it in other places on my walk. It might be because the fields are watered frequently.

That wood piece is adorable. When does the silent auction here on the blog start? I’ll open the bids!

  19. Dan, woodworking seems to be so rewarding in that you are taking something that otherwise would look or be discarded, and give it new life. I think Fall is finally here. Misty rain, smokeys running amok looking for acorns, the line at Starbucks is around the block, and the temps for the next couple of weeks look to be leveling off. Go Pens! 2-0 before tonight’s game. Loved seeing Brunicke and Hallander each get their first point on Brunicke’s historic goal as a South African-born player.

    1. Thanks Diana. I bought this piece of wood at a woodworking show for $10. At the time, I had no idea what I might do with it. That circular-ish area seemed to want to be a clock. I thought I could stick a clock into the recess, but my daughter thought it would look better if I could put the mechanism behind somehow. That’s the next challenge.
