Before first: Happy Thanksgiving to my friends in Canada!

First, the news: Marsha Ingrao and I are teaming up to bring you a special challenge. Marsha and I and Cee Neuner shared a birthday—November 7th. It was just the funny kind of coincidence that rises to the surface in the blogging world, but now that Cee is gone, we want to do something to remember her. What could be better than a photo challenge?

Cee was always known for her FOTD (flower of the Day) challenge, and perhaps less well known for her CBWC (Cee’s Black and White Challenge) which she ended in favor of her Midweek Madness Challenge. I participated in Cee’s Black and White Challenge a few times, and I remember always being impressed by Cee’s black and white photos.

So, here’s the deal. On Friday, November 7th, post a flower or a black and white photo on your blog. It can be the subject of your post, or just a photo you add to a different post. Visit either my blog (https://noFacilities.com), or Marsha’s (https://alwayswrite.blog/), or both and leave a link to your post. The black-and-white pictures can be on any topic, but Marsha reminded me that Cee particularly loved bridges and old barns. Post a photo and, if you like, add a thought about Cee or your experience with her challenges. Reminders, links and the publishing schedule will follow in the coming weeks. Note: I plan to put my post up early enough for the folks in Australia to join as their day starts.

Now, for CFFC. This week we’re continuing the series we started last week, the one I summed up with “Places People Spend Time and/or Money.” If you look at the home page, you can see the kinds of places we’ll be trying to find. I don’t think there’s a lot of overlap, but it’s always good to know what the future is going to bring.

We’re moving on to retail establishments, but try to exclude food and groceries, since that’s next week’s subject.

Six of Dan's books
The Dreamer’s Alliance and Rascal Todd Mysteries on “display” on the Gateway Clipper.

If any of those look interesting, you can find them all here. PS, they are all also available in audiobook format. I used KDP’s Virtual Voice, but I edited each book in its entirety, and I really like the way they turned out. And, as far as audiobooks go, they are a bargain.

  1. I love the hardware store! Dan that’s a great idea, count me in. That’s amazing you all share the same birthday. Cee was one of the first bloggers I met when I started and always so welcoming to her challenges. It’s really lovely to her see her memory living on, it just shows what an impact she made here.

    1. I’m glad you’ll be joining us, Wayne. I’ll post some reminders along the way, and I’m sure Marsha will as well. Cee was very special. I’m glad you like the hardware store (my favorites).

  2. What a great gallery of shops and retail Dan.
I like the idea of a Memory of Cee challenge and should be back home by then.
My post for Terri’s Sunday Stills had a Cee dedication 😀

  5. Of all these places to spend time and money in, the most inviting for me is the old department store, but I’d want to go in when it was a real department store. Is that where your mom worked? I miss the old department stores, whether the small local one or the elegant Marshall Field’s in the Loop. Your gallery is an interesting commentary on our errand lives. Next week will be too, it seems.

    1. G Fox was a department store here in Hartford. My mom worked for Kaufman’s in Pittsburgh, but they were both part of the May Company stores which gobbled up department stores all over the country. In 2004, they acquired Marshall Field’s. I loved wandering around department stores. I liked the downtown stores more than the mall varieties. When I first moved to Hartford, I worked downtown and there were still two department stores in operation (G Fox and Sage-Allen). I used to go there during lunch.

      1. I hope Kaufman’s had cool doors like G Fox’s. The loss of Marshall Field’s was huge. It was its own world. Wandering a department store during lunch time is a lovely memory!

        1. Kaufman’s was more traditional, whereas G Fox’s home store was Art Deco throughout. Kaufman’s had a giant brass clock on one corner, and it was a frequent meeting place – “I’ll meet you under Kaufman’s clock” is a well known phrase in Pittsburgh. (There was a different version my father shared about what he would do if he lost a bet, but I won’t go there). The store closed years ago, and the new owners have plans for some retail, offices and residences, but they say they are committed to keeping the clock.

          1. A clock! Of course! Same with L.S. Ayres in Indianapolis. And Marshall Field’s in The Loop. I do hope they keep the clock, and I’d suggest a brass plaque with your dad’s name near it; only you will know the historical significance.

  6. Like Maureen, I too miss the old department stores and the small ‘mom & pop’ stores where the salesperson(s) knew you and exactly what to show you.

I bet that first hardware store had anything and everything you might need. Today you would be told, “Sorry, you have to order that online.”

The shot of the disheveled shelves is all too familiar these days. Sad commentary on life as we know it today.

Great collection depicting places where we spend our time and kiss our money goodbye!

    1. I’m glad you liked this, Ginger. The little hardware stores are always a favorite of mine. Sarasnick’s Hardware is still in operation in the town where I was born. They had everything you might need. I remember being sent there by my dad to get things he needed for a repair he was working on.

One of the last times I was in a large department store Men’s department, it looked like a bomb had gone off. I really don’t understand people.

We’re getting soaked here. I hope you can stay dry for a couple days.

  8. It is a wonderful idea and plan to honor Cee with the November 7 challenge that you and Marsha have planned. What a marvelous connection you, Marsha, and Cee have… the same birthday… gave me goosebumps when I read that.

A really great gallery, Dan. I enjoyed all your photos and the atmosphere. I may have mentioned that I love shopping, so photos of shops are up there next to trains and water for me..!
Sarasnick’s Hardware is a superb photo, and I love the mirror image you captured in the window of the building across the street. The sky too is awesome.

My favorites… the soft outdoor lighting and upbeat mood/vibe of the 960 Main facade photo and the ornate and, nostalgic entrance to Station Square shops.

I like the sense of movement you captured and the tree framing your photo of those elegant double doors of the facade at “Burberry Brit(?)”

Great photos, Dan. Thanks for this virtual window/door shopping tour and drive along and for the inspiration for this week’s challenge.

Thanks for the Canada Thanksgiving best regards. Much appreciated.

    1. I’m glad you like the idea of honoring Cee, Suzette. Many people mention her from time to time. I think we all have blogging or photo memories that are associated with her and her challenges.

I love your comments. I remember shopping when it was driven by stores and not the Internet. I feel bad that some people will never know what it’s like to wander through an eight or ten story department store.

Sarasnicks was a hometown staple, and they seemed to have everything we ever needed, including advice. You could go there with a problem, and someone would say, “Well, you could use one of these…” Such a unique experience.

Your door photo from a supermarket gave me the idea to separate retail from groceries and food shopping. I hope I have enough of the latter in my archives.

I hope you have a great holiday and a wonderful week.

      1. You are right, Dan. The experience of shopping at department stores with many wonderful floors of items is fading from the culture. That used to be total fun for me…at Woolworths in particular…oh, there I go dating myself again…lol.

I am happy to provide a bit of inspiration in a photo or two; you do such a great job in that regard, Dan.

I hope you have a wonderful day as well. Cheers.

    1. I love neighborhood hardware stores. We have five within an easy drive. I have a favorite, and I just spent $36 there a few days ago for a project I’m working on in the garage. I love to be able to go in and buy four bolts instead of two packs of three bolts. One piece of steel and a bag of nuts and bolts–not cheap, but exactly what I needed.

I’m glad you like the idea we have for Cee’s birthday tribute. I hope you have a great day. Wilson would not be a happy pup here today. Wind and rain. He wouldn’t be able to stay dry, even under an umbrella.

      1. Neighborhood hardware stores are the best (except at inventory time when counting all those nuts and bolts used to cross my eyes!). I heard about the first Nor’easter of the season hitting the East Coast. Stay warm and as dry as you can. Happy Monday, Dan.

  13. Your downtown storefronts look so nice. I rarely head downtown anymore. All the good shops have closed and we now have way too many (in my opinion) bars and restaurants in their place. Plus parking is a nightmare since our mayor decided we should pay to park. And use an app. And not be confused between blue signs and aqua signs which have waaaaay different rules for parking. And then the app for senior parking. I give up. I will just enjoy your photos and relive the old times.

November 7 is on my calendar! What a great idea this!

  16. If I walked into that sports store in the strip, I’d be leaving with a couple of bags full of merch. Lots of time spent, lots of money spent In a world full of color, I still have a great appreciation for monochrome shots. Great idea, Dan. Those NY Rangers apparently were not happy losing their home opener. No worries, the West Coast trips are always good “bonding” opportunities and we’ll see how the Pens handle it.

    1. We know we’re going to spend some money whenever we head into the Strip District, but it’s fun. I hope the Pens stay healthy.

I will try to get a new monochrome shot of the railroad trestle over the Connecticut River once the leaves finish coming down. I have lots in the archive, but I’m going to try to get a new one for the 1-day challenge.

  24. I was just thinking today it’s been a very very long time since I’ve been in Macy’s. I once even had a Macy’s charge card, but I also worked in an office a few blocks away at the time.

So many actual retail establishments have closed, it’s hard to even find a hardware store any more. I would much rather buy something in person than online. But it’s difficult these days. (K)

    Liked by 1 person

    1. I, too, would much rather shop in person, but it is hard, and getting harder. Small retail establishments are under so much pressure. For hardware, I have to accept that I am paying a little more, but the personal service and close proximity are worth it. As is the ability to get in, get what I need and get back to my project.

The shopping trolley bay in our local Woolworths is full of recycled plastic trolleys. They send a staff member out to collect the strays from the car park and nearby areas and bring them back.

I love the idea of commemorating Cee on 7 November. I have a birthday twin amongst my acquaintances, most people do but being a birthday triplet is more unusual I think. I will definitely try to participate.

[…] We took the double decker to Camden Locks in London. On the way we passed what appeared to be an area devoted to large graffiti murals, some of them reminiscent of Banksy, and then a street of shops with huge 3D objects decorating the front facades. “Is this it?” I asked. “No,” but another block, and “This is it!” Older yellow and orange brick buildings dominated, most with a lot of character. The Interchange, dark orange lettering against light orange bricks.A hat shop with just about every type of hat you could think of. Cyberdog store with its unique huge silver figures. Inside is ‘rave’ clothing, with unique cuts in black or fluorescent materials, something I would have thought was cool 50 plus years ago!Inside one of the buildings were rows of small shops and crowds of people, and masses of clothing markets, some reminding me of the markets in Mexico with so many goods available I was overwhelmed. Display of brooches on a mannequin in a shop.  The pillow I really wanted. There were masses of food places, a lot of them “grab ‘n go”with pods outside to sit in if the weather wasn’t great, along with pubs and terraces for sit-down dining. There are actual ‘locks’ for canal boats in the area, and you can take a tour via canal boat. A block over and we found the stores with giant 3-D objects on the front. This New Rock, the Leather and Boot Store, has a huge 3-D boot on its facade.Another New Rock store, this time with its giant boot wrapped in chains. Chinese Buffet with a huge 3-D dragon descending. We definitely shouldn’t have eaten before going there. All we did was drop into the first pub we found with a Happy Hour for a beer. But that’s another story. More of Dan’s CFFC: Retail Places. […]
