We’re closing in on the end of October faster than I’d like. There’s still much to do before anyone around here wants to start thinking about winter. We’re going to act like we made a lot progress and celebrate anyway. Actually, I made enough progress to justify at least a small celebration. Along the way, we’ll see if we can work in Linda’s Stream of Consciousness Saturday prompt:
Your Friday prompt for Stream of Consciousness Saturday is “hook.” Use it any way you’d like. Have fun!
SoCS by Linda G. Hill
Interesting and timely in a weird sort of way.
“Good afternoon, Dan.”
“Hi, David. Did you order? I’m thirsty.”
“I did. Curley had a delivery on the patio. He said he’d be right back. In fact, there he is now.”
“Here you go, Dan, a nice cold Modelo draft.”
“I’m paying, shouldn’t you serve me first?”
“I always serve the guest first. Besides, your ‘drink’ as you call it is quite an ordeal.”
“I don’t understand why it’s so hard. Three things, three glasses.”
“If you really want to know, it’s the snifter of seltzer that bugs me. The shape of the glass means it fills faster as you get to the top. Easy to spill, and then it’s sticky — I hate that.”
“Okay. I guess that makes sense.”
“But I get paid for it. Here’s your John Howell’s Bourbon, that snifter of seltzer and a glass of ice.”
“Thanks Curley. Cheers, Dan.”
“Cheers David.”
“So Dan, what have you been up to this week?”
“Cleaning the garage to get the cars inside, and working on that clock.”
“How’s the clock coming?”
“I didn’t make a lot of progress, but I didn’t break anything. The cars are in the garage though.”
“What about outside? Are you picking up leaves yet?”
“Not too many have fallen, and I’m not up to shaking the trees. Next week, I have to move a few plants and prune a few others, but landscaping isn’t a priority with me.”
“You want the name of my guys? They do a great job.”
“No thanks, David. I’m not good with people working for me.”
“It makes you uncomfortable, doesn’t it?”
“Look doctor, I didn’t come here to be analyzed.”
“It’s just that some people…”
“Yeah, yeah, I know. Some people and all that jazz. Curley, David’s buying me another beer.”
“Coming right up, Dan.”
“What about in the evening, Dan? Are you working on that new book?”
“No, I never write in the evening. When I’m tired, I make mistakes.”
“From what I’ve heard from the proofreader, you make mistakes when you’re alert. So, what do you do in the evening?”
“I’ve been watching some old movies.”
“Yeah, what’d you watch last night?”
“Bogart and Bacall — To Have and Have Not — I like that movie.”
“Is that the one where Bogart’s a fisherman?”
“He owns a fishing boat. It starts with a guy that hooks into a big Marlin and then loses him along with Bogart’s fishing gear.”
“Then that guy gets killed, right?”
“Right.”
“I remember it now. Who’s the guy playing the piano?”
“Hoagie Carmichael. My mother liked him a lot.”
“Sounds like she got you hooked.”
“Perhaps, it is an old movie.”
If you haven’t heard, Marsha Ingrao and I decided to sponsor a one day / one photo challenge on November 7th. That’s our birthday and it would have been Cee Neuner’s birthday. So, the deal is, post a picture of a flower or a black and white photo on your blog. It can be the only thing you post or you can add it to your post. Then link to Marsha’s blog or mine. Also, Deb Waters, the woman who took over Cee’s Which Way Challenge will be supporting the challenge.
Below the badge we’re using for this challenge is a gallery that includes quite a few autumn pictures. I’m posting these for Deb’s Which Way Challenge this week and a little music.

Here’s the signature song from To Have and Have Not. Lauren Bacall and Hoagie Carmichael at the piano.
