John Howell’s Bourbon Special

We’re closing in on the end of October faster than I’d like. There’s still much to do before anyone around here wants to start thinking about winter. We’re going to act like we made a lot progress and celebrate anyway. Actually, I made enough progress to justify at least a small celebration. Along the way, we’ll see if we can work in Linda’s Stream of Consciousness Saturday prompt:

SoCS by Linda G. Hill

Interesting and timely in a weird sort of way.

“Good afternoon, Dan.”

“Hi, David. Did you order? I’m thirsty.”

“I did. Curley had a delivery on the patio. He said he’d be right back. In fact, there he is now.”

“Here you go, Dan, a nice cold Modelo draft.”

“I’m paying, shouldn’t you serve me first?”

“I always serve the guest first. Besides, your ‘drink’ as you call it is quite an ordeal.”

“I don’t understand why it’s so hard. Three things, three glasses.”

“If you really want to know, it’s the snifter of seltzer that bugs me. The shape of the glass means it fills faster as you get to the top. Easy to spill, and then it’s sticky — I hate that.”

“Okay. I guess that makes sense.”

“But I get paid for it. Here’s your John Howell’s Bourbon, that snifter of seltzer and a glass of ice.”

“Thanks Curley. Cheers, Dan.”

“Cheers David.”

“So Dan, what have you been up to this week?”

“Cleaning the garage to get the cars inside, and working on that clock.”

“How’s the clock coming?”

“I didn’t make a lot of progress, but I didn’t break anything. The cars are in the garage though.”

“What about outside? Are you picking up leaves yet?”

“Not too many have fallen, and I’m not up to shaking the trees. Next week, I have to move a few plants and prune a few others, but landscaping isn’t a priority with me.”

“You want the name of my guys? They do a great job.”

“No thanks, David. I’m not good with people working for me.”

“It makes you uncomfortable, doesn’t it?”

“Look doctor, I didn’t come here to be analyzed.”

“It’s just that some people…”

“Yeah, yeah, I know. Some people and all that jazz. Curley, David’s buying me another beer.”

“Coming right up, Dan.”

“What about in the evening, Dan? Are you working on that new book?”

“No, I never write in the evening. When I’m tired, I make mistakes.”

“From what I’ve heard from the proofreader, you make mistakes when you’re alert. So, what do you do in the evening?”

“I’ve been watching some old movies.”

“Yeah, what’d you watch last night?”

“Bogart and Bacall — To Have and Have Not — I like that movie.”

“Is that the one where Bogart’s a fisherman?”

“He owns a fishing boat. It starts with a guy that hooks into a big Marlin and then loses him along with Bogart’s fishing gear.”

“Then that guy gets killed, right?”

“Right.”

“I remember it now. Who’s the guy playing the piano?”

“Hoagie Carmichael. My mother liked him a lot.”

“Sounds like she got you hooked.”

“Perhaps, it is an old movie.”

If you haven’t heard, Marsha Ingrao and I decided to sponsor a one day / one photo challenge on November 7th. That’s our birthday and it would have been Cee Neuner’s birthday. So, the deal is, post a picture of a flower or a black and white photo on your blog. It can be the only thing you post or you can add it to your post. Then link to Marsha’s blog or mine. Also, Deb Waters, the woman who took over Cee’s Which Way Challenge will be supporting the challenge.

Below the badge we’re using for this challenge is a gallery that includes quite a few autumn pictures. I’m posting these for Deb’s Which Way Challenge this week and a little music.

Here’s the signature song from To Have and Have Not. Lauren Bacall and Hoagie Carmichael at the piano.

  1. Well I don’t know Curly but I didn’t think he was on the portly side
“In fat, there he is now.”” 😁
The leaves and trees are so good Dan. Something I don’t get to see unless I go to the towns in the mountains.

    1. Thanks for catching the typo. I wouldn’t want to offend the guy pouring my beer. Autumn is my favorite season.

  2. Fall color is beautiful, although I do look at it, appreciate it, and then think about cleaning it up. :-)

    1. Our cleanup tasks have diminished since our neighbor took down all their trees. I miss them, and the wife recently planted two new ones, but those leaves will fall in their yard for many years to come. I will have to clean up quite a few, but I would miss seeing the color and having the shade during the summer.

    1. I could watch that movie every night. I think I’d choose it over a WWII movie (although it kind of is one).

  4. haha, my mom got me hooked on Bogie & Bacall, but dad got me hooked on Hoagie Carmichael.
Um, isn’t David supposed to get cherries too?

    1. Very good parents :)

Let’s go with the peanuts being implied. There is one in the picture.

  5. You’ve got some wonderful colors going there, but the silhouette of the birch tree is my favorite. I like the way it seems to be leaning into the day as it begins. The older I get, the more I see trees as work but I certainly can’t deny their beauty and all they do for us, not to mention what they do for birds and squirrels. That’s a fine pumpkin harvest, by the way!

    1. Trees do represent a lot of work, but they give us flowery blossoms, shade and beautiful color. I think it’s a fair bargain. I worry that the birch tree will be taken down. It leans into the power line right-of-way. It’s not tall enough to do any damage if it were to fall, but I’m sure someone has a sheet with numbers and measurements and instructions. Someone that isn’t here to see it every morning. We will cut each pumpkin for the “Farmers” to enjoy.

  6. Kudos to the squirrels for their pumpkin harvest. They deserve some extra peanuts Dan.

Is David on a diet? No cherries!

Bogie and Bacall never disappointed, and Hoagie Carmichael was a classic!

Beautiful array of fall colors in your area. Love those misty photos and the Memorial through the trees.

Why Dan, that wizard is holding a bobcat by the tail!

    Enjoy the weekend.

    1. Extra peanuts? Ginger, are the squirrels paying you on the side?

I was working on this post late while watching that movie, I forgot the cherries.

The tree of them, and Walter Brennan really make that movie. The entire cast was selected well. I could watch it over and over.

There we go, the wizard was hunting. Wizards have to eat, right? Good job!

I hope you have a great weekend.

  7. Look, ‘doctor’, I didn’t come here to be analyzed”….ahaha! Good one, Dan!

Love the photos, all of them superb. The fall colors are wonderful. That red tree between the houses (with the white car)…stunning and a great photo.
The mist rising over the fields and the park areas feel magical. The photo through the trees with the mist and the flags looks like it would go well as a book cover…I think.

My absolute favorite is the leaf on the wet grass at sunrise. I get a sense of peace from the view and the atmospheric vibe of the photo…superb.

The pumpkin harvest the critters planted is excellent…I admire your ‘assistant gardeners’, so diligent. You are very lucky to have their participation.

P.S. Thank you for the lovely music selection. It’s been a minute since I watched modern movie theatre classics.

Great share as always, Dan, thank you. And I hope you have a great weekend. Cheers.

    1. Thanks you so much, Suzette. The photo on my last book was featured in a blog post where someone said it would make a good book cover. Now I have to make a note of this one.

The pumpkin plants died after the first hard freeze we had, but I think they got a pretty good harvest. I’ll be cutting one up later this afternoon.

I love that move. I was torn between that song and Am I Blue? which features both of them – here’s the link, it’s only a minute long. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=YnuCCcXPRSM

I really like the picture you liked. There’s something about the wet grass that works well with that leaf.

I hope you have a great weekend.

      1. Thank you for the link, I remember that song now! Oh my goodness…That sure brings back fond memories.

I am think the critters will be delighted with the pumpkin bounty, they look the perfect size for them to feast inside comfortably once opened. Cheers Dan.

  9. I’m always inspired by your projects. I have two large ones — storage room and attic — that I’ve been putting off because of the heat but I’m running out of days to use that excuse and haven’t mustered up the determination to start. Now we’re talking about replacing all the carpet and that means closets have been added to the list. 🫣😖

    1. Closets? As in the place where angels fear to tread? I’d postpone the carpet until 2026.

  10. Your trees are so pretty! Ours turn kind of sporadically–mostly they stay green or completely shed their leaves. Not too much color, but I embrace what I can.

Bogie and Bacall–be still my heart. They were great together. Hard to believe she was only 19 years old. I didn’t look near that good at 19. Still don’t. 😂😹 Have a great weekend, Dan.

    1. She was amazing, and at such a young age. I maybe could have played the guy that got shot trying to ride away.

A lot of our trees are somewhat muted this year due to the drought conditions we’ve been having.

    1. Thanks Jan. We have a lot of trees that haven’t started to change yet, but some of the early ones really brighten up my morning walk. I think the One Day challenge will be a nice thing. Cee was a great friend, and so helpful to so many photographers and bloggers.

  12. I always look forward to your Autumn photos, Dan The dew, color and light are mesmerizing. While I am a landscaping fanatic (if you call jungle management landscaping) I agree about doing my own work. I need to catch up on your older posts and find out about this clock project. The prompts sound fun. Three glasses, David? Seriously? Of course I use that many mixing up my favorite cocktails. Enjoy this pre Winter wonderland, Dan.

The first clock post (the initial idea) is here: https://nofacilities.com/2025/09/27/late-arrival-socs/ Of course, that idea changed greatly before the second post: https://nofacilities.com/2025/10/11/time-will-tell-socs/

I hope to have an update next Saturday. It’s been an interesting project, and I almost destroyed the whole thing on Thursday. I’m in a good place now.

Landscaping in your part of the world must be interesting. I doubt David’s people would want the job.

I hope you have a great weekend.

      1. Thanks for the links! I’m sure it will turn out great. Let’s just say the ‘gardeners’ hereabouts prefer to slash things to the bare bark. Even though it all grows back, there is little room for lush growth and it stunts blooming. This way I can only blame myself if anything goes wrong. 😉

  24. Those squirrels are gonna eat well, Dan. I may have relayed the story before of the time we set out a large pumpkin on our front porch and the squirrels went “nuts’ on it. I walked up to the front door and there was pumpkin everywhere as if someone dropped it from ten feet up. Hey, squirrels gotta eat too. I have heard some people “coat” their pumpkins so they won’t be as attractive to eat, but I don’t have the heart to do that so pumpkin-less we go. Bring on the hardy mums. We have a lot of hardy mums, and the squirrels just enjoy them as they fly by. Win-win.

    1. I’m glad you didn’t coat yours. My brother set an uncarved pumpkin on his steps. Squirrels dug into it. and ate the seeds. They made several holes, so when they were done, he just put a candle in it. It looked weird but it was Halloween, so…
