Last week we did retail establishments that sell food. This week, we’re moving onto Cultural Venues, but there’s a slight warning. If you take a look at the home page for the challenge, you’ll see that some things are coming up that might be considered cultural venues. Specifically, ‘Sporting Venues’ and ‘Libraries and Bookstores’ which will be covered separately. However, as they say, you do you. Post whatever you like. By the way, churches are also going to be covered separately.

My feature photo this week is the inside of the Warner Theater, looking back at the entrance.

On Friday, November 7th, post a flower or a black and white photo on your blog. It can be the subject of your post, or just a photo you add to a different post. Visit either my blog (https://noFacilities.com), or Marsha’s (https://alwayswrite.blog/), or both and leave a link to your post. The black-and-white pictures can be on any topic, but Marsha reminded me that Cee particularly loved bridges and old barns. Post a photo and, if you like, add a thought about Cee or your experience with her challenges. Reminders, links and the publishing schedule will follow in the coming weeks. Note: I plan to put my post up early enough for the folks in Australia to join as their day starts. You can use the hashtag @1Day4Cee and you can use the badge below if you like.

Six of Dan's books
The Dreamer’s Alliance and Rascal Todd Mysteries on “display” on the Gateway Clipper.

If any of those look interesting, you can find them all here. PS, they are all also available in audiobook format. I used KDP’s Virtual Voice, but I edited each book in its entirety, and I really like the way they turned out. And, as far as audiobooks go, they are a bargain.

  1. Theater entrances always feel like a magical sort of space. An entryway into wonder, joy, laughter, adventure — each one a new experience.

  6. So hard to pick a favourite of these. I wish I could visit them all. I do agree with you about the theatre entrances. Old theatres always have wonderful entrances don’t they? The red brick opera house surprised me. I guess I am used to thinking of Opera Houses as being very imposing and this one is quite unpretentious.

    1. Thanks! That Opera House is more of the kind you might have found in small towns during the 19th century where it was a cover story for a saloon. Still, it’s been well preserved and it is used by a community theater group.

  8. These are all so inviting! But the model railroad set-up is outstanding — yes, I could spend time there! The entrance to the movie theater is so good that I think I smelled popcorn. The house that’s part of the Webb Deane Stevens Museum is calming just looking at it. I’d love to go in. The Phipps’ lamps are beautiful! A great Monday morning gallery — thank you!

    1. I’m glad you enjoyed these, Maureen. They are all places that I could escape to for the better part of a day or evening. That’s one small piece of the model railroad layout in the Carnegie Science Center. The layout is huge, and mostly historically accurate, covering the Pittsburgh area for most of the 20th century.

    Thanks for sharing these.

    1. Thanks Ginger. I love these places. My daughter recently texted me saying that she wants to visit the Carnegie History Museum the next time we’re in Pittsburgh. I used to go there often when I was in graduate school. It’s right across from the university and admission was free for students.

  12. The T-Rex reminded me of our many trips with our boys to the Museum of Natural History in NYC. When our sons were old enough to travel into The City by themselves, they’d head straight to the museum. Now they bring their own kids. I always knew it was a special place but knowing the family tradition lives on makes it even more special.

  14. Wonderful theme, Dan, and beautifully photographed gallery.

*Love the train display at Carnegie Science Center and Luna Park and Kennywood Park in miniature; such amazing detail, the trees look amazing!

I love the sparkle of theatre entrances, their marquees, and the showbills. Especially love the colors you captured in the New York (I think) entrance “Dazzling Thrilling.”

My absolute favorite photo, which to me is like a postcard, is the Phipps Conservatory replete with fabulous streetlamps. The building’s design is elegant. Amazing photography!

Love the photo of the bike with the Aviation building in the background…a perfect contrast/comparison of methods of transportation all in one photo. A great theme for a photography challenge, perhaps, eh?

The Riverside Theater looks like a beautiful setting for an outdoor theatre. Not certain how much of the performance I would take in; I would be delightfully distracted by the surroundings.

Thank you as always for the inspiring ideas and for your great photos thoughtfully presented, Dan.

    1. Thanks Suzette. I think I could have split this between indoor and outdoor venues, but the divisions sometimes get confusing.

The bike at the air museum is mine. I had a blowout and I was waiting for my wife to come pick me up. The people at the museum were very kind. Fortunately, the museum is only about 3 miles away.

Phipps is a wonderful place to visit. There are over a dozen themed rooms/gardens inside.

I’ve only been to the Riverside Theater one time, for a small concert. It was nice, but it was easy to be distracted. Of course, I’m easily distracted anyway.

I hope your week is off to a great start.

  32. I am a big fan of playhouse and movie theatres, Dan. Some of the entrances still radiate with that vibe from 75-100 years ago. There are a number of locations in the Philly area which buyers and/or donors have swooped in and saved the day from them going away. It’s nice to keep these original locations up-and-running, or at the very least repurposed. Enjoyed this cultural theme.
