Thursday Doors Combined 2025 Badge

The 2025 badge contest ended in a tie. I was alternating the badge but I kept losing track. You’re free to use the combined badge or either Teagan’s or Ritva’s individual badge.

Last week I shared doors from the train I took into Hartford and Union Station. I was on my way to pick up my car that had been repaired. Once in Hartford, I walked across the Connecticut River into East Hartford. Along the way, I snagged photos of a few doors, and as the title suggests, some street art. We don’t have much in the way of street art — nothing like what people in other parts of the world have shared — but I like these examples. PS, according to the artist: “The Fireflies mural depicts 10-year-old Sam Gonzalez, who lives in East Hartford, releasing fireflies from a glass jar. The artist, Michael Rice, wanted the mural to send the message that you should experience the world with childlike wonder.”

I hope you enjoy the photos in the gallery. The feature photo was taken as I was walking across the Bulkeley Bridge (the longest stone arch bridge in the Interstate highway system) on my way to East Hartford where the dealership is.

Please take a few minutes to visit the doors from the other participants. You know, it’s not just doors waiting for you. There’s poetry, artwork and short stories, too.

Six of Dan's books
The Dreamer’s Alliance and Rascal Todd Mysteries on “display” on the Gateway Clipper.

If any of those look interesting, you can find them all here. PS, they are all also available in audiobook format. I used KDP’s Virtual Voice, but I edited each book in its entirety, and I really like the way they turned out. And, as far as audiobooks go, they are a bargain.

  1. Dan the first two images of street art are fantastic! I also enjoy the first building and of course the church. Here is my entry again for this week https://wrookieschu.com/2025/10/30/doors-of-wordpress-v141-fremantle-prison/

  2. Great shots of the doors, Dan! The street art on the side of a hotel is interesting. Is the guy catching fireflies or releasing them?

    1. The fireflies are escaping, Miriam. It’s the tallest mural in New England and it was meant to send a message of hope and joy. I’ve been driving past it (on the highway) for a few years, but I think walking by is the only way to get a good picture. According to the artist: “The mural depicts 10-year-old Sam Gonzalez, who lives in East Hartford, releasing fireflies from a glass jar. The artist, Michael Rice, wanted the mural to send the message that you should experience the world with childlike wonder.”

      1. I’m sure it’s not possible to take a photo of a mural this size when driving by, Dan! Your walking made it possible! I love the message from the artist! We all should find something childlike to do. 😍

  9. You sure gave us a taste of the city. Some real grit in these images. That giant image of the child with lightning bugs seems so incongruous — I wonder if people stop and look. The feature photo is a beauty!

    1. The governor and the city mayor hoped that people would notice the mural, but it looks over a highway interchange so it’s hard to stop and look (unless it’s during rush hour). I should have added this to the post, but according to the artist: “The mural depicts 10-year-old Sam Gonzalez, who lives in East Hartford, releasing fireflies from a glass jar. The artist, Michael Rice, wanted the mural to send the message that you should experience the world with childlike wonder.”

  11. A post from heaven in my book, street art and doors, it doesn’t get much better! The range of architecture in your pictures is amazing, I guess like so many urban centres where different periods are stacked up alongside one another. I love that first building – I wonder if a new lessee will give it a lick of paint. The street art is wonderful, and the anamorphic piece by M Rice of the woman reading a book is exceptional.

    1. I knew you would like this post, Steve. Hartford has gone through several attempts to renew and revitalize, none of which have really worked. They’re trying again, the tall mural, the skate part and the mural you mentioned are all visible as you walk to the area of new construction on the city’s north end. The city destroyed access to that portion when they cut through with Interstate-84. They did a cut and cover tunnel trying to bridge the connection (that’s where the skate park is) and they are finally building things on the north side. It’s been over 60 years since they built the highway. The other street art is from the south end, which has held onto its culture to a degree.

      1. Interesting. High-end pieces are often reserved for new builds as part of the look and feel, whereas the older pre-gentrified places tend to be rougher authentic graffiti.

        Liked by 1 person

        1. The fireflies mural is in the area of the only new construction underway. The girl with the book and the skate park are on the way to the newly developed area.

  12. […] A view of nature gently framed by the entrance of a timeworn building. I hope you appreciate the beautiful contrast between the vibrant outdoors and the wear of the structure, as it tells a story of both beauty and decay. This image highlights the poignant difference between the enchanting allure of nature and the fading remnants of human craftsmanship, observed through the threshold of a once-proud building. It captures a heartfelt moment where the colors of the natural world embraces the history of human creation, inviting us to value both the thriving beauty and the whispers of time. This scene was shared with Thursday Doors. […]

    1. I love seeing it, too. We don’t have much around here, but maybe that’s going to change. The tall mural and the girl reading the book are relatively new, and they have been supported by the mayor and governor (Hartford is the state capital).

    1. I”ve never been inside the White Rabbit. I can only imagine that 100 years ago that building was a hopping place (sorry). The building is an easy walk from the train station, and I think it probably attracted a large number of business travelers. Maybe insurance wasn’t as boring then as it seems today.

  17. Great gallery, Dan.

I love the view from your bridge crossing in the feature photo and the mirror image of the skyline in the river. The river is almost like a huge mirror…pretty amazing.

So totally unexpected and a delight to see a Caribbean restaurant…Wow! Thanks, Dan!! Feels like home.

St. Patrick and St. Anthony church is a beautiful building and looks well cared for. I love the tiny attention to details in the lines of color around the windows. Great photo, Dan. And I like seeing the car out in front, it gives a sense of scale.

*I am a huge fan of street art/murals and was delighted to be introduced to the fabulous artwork of Michael Rice and the others you shared. I like them all! The girl reading the book is pretty awesome!

  18. Thanks Suzette. I haven’t been to or know anyone who has been to the Russel, but it looks like a lively place.

I have lots of photos of the Hartford skyline, but from a different angle, and looking up from the river. The view from the bridge is very interesting, especially with the sun rising later. I was happy with that picture.

St. Patrick and St. Anthony church is beautiful, and it’s beautiful inside. I haven’t been inside for about 20 years, so I’m not sure that’s still true. It’s the oldest Roman Catholic church in Connecticut. I’m not sure, but I assume that extends back to the original church building, which was destroyed by fire in 1853 and the original parish, as churches date themselves from the point the congregation was assembled. I featured their bell tower (below) several years ago.

The street art was interesting, and I know there are a lot of fans here.

    1. Those two churches are at opposite ends of the spectrum. When I first moved to CT, my boss was a man who ran a computer training school in that building. That was back when Computer Science degrees were not that common. I don’t know when the building became a church, but it seems an odd conversion.

I’m glad you like the street art. I hope you have a great day, Ginger. Stay dry.
