Remember the machines they used to have at carnivals? The deal was, you guessed your weight, then put in a penny. If your guess was close enough to your actual weight, you got your penny back. Of course, the likelihood that the scale was remotely accurate was another story. I get that feeling at my doctor’s office.

Without leaving indelible images in your mind’s eye, let just say that when I check my weight at home, it’s mostly just me on the scale. At the doctor’s office, the scale is in the public hallway. My old doctor explained before offering today’s one-liner. She said that they record the weight shown on the scale with no allowance for clothing. I tried to explain the concept of ‘tare weight’ which I learned while studying chemistry. She said she hated chemistry classes more than any classes she took on her way to becoming a doctor, and she added:

“Remove as much clothing as you like, but I’m recording the weight shown on the scale.”

My Doctor for One-Liner Wednesday by Linda G. Hill

My annual checkup was yesterday. My goal for that visit, given me by my doctor during my last visit, was to be under a certain weight, as measured in the office on that scale. I made it by 4.8 ounces (136 grams). Please don’t ask me what I ate to celebrate.

I’ve been promoting the #1Day4Cee challenge all week, but I want to add a piece of new information for those of you in time zones way ahead of mine. My post will go live at 2:00 PM Eastern Standard Time on Thursday, November 6th, so you can more easily link to it. If you want to schedule your post to publish after mine is live, please see the instructions in the excerpt in the sidebar for the link.

This Friday, November 7th, several of us bloggers are asking you to post a flower or a black and white photo on your blog, in memory of Cee Neuner. Your photo can be the subject of your post, or just a photo you add to a different post. Visit either my blog (https://noFacilities.com), or Marsha’s (https://alwayswrite.blog/), or both and leave a link to your post. The black-and-white pictures can be on any topic, but Marsha reminded me that Cee particularly loved bridges and old barns. Post a photo and, if you like, add a thought about Cee or your experience with her challenges. Reminders, links and the publishing schedule will follow in the coming weeks. You can also link up at Cee’s Which Way Challenge which is now managed by Deb Waters. Deb will be featuring Which Ways with B&W photos beginning on the 7th.

Note: I plan to put my post up early enough for the folks in Australia to join as their day starts. You can use the hashtag #1Day4Cee and you can use the badge below if you like.

Six of Dan's books
The Dreamer’s Alliance and Rascal Todd Mysteries on “display” on the Gateway Clipper.

If any of those look interesting, you can find them all here. PS, they are all also available in audiobook format. I used KDP’s Virtual Voice, but I edited each book in its entirety, and I really like the way they turned out. And, as far as audiobooks go, they are a bargain.

  2. A warning would have been kind on this one; when I got to the part about not asking you what you ate to celebrate there was a very close call. Nonetheless, I join in the congratulations on your victory. Of course I had to look up tare weight, and I agree that doctors should be more flexible about recording our weight. Surely our clothes are heavier than we realize!

    1. I guess I should have included a definition of Tare Weight. I usually wear jeans, and they are very heavy. I was thinking about a pair of lightweight slacks (that I never wear) but thought that would be gaming it. Seriously, they should take it into account. I did move everything (keys, wallet, phone) into my jacket which I placed on a table.

  3. I like those leaf shadows.

When I was overweight (and I’m not anymore) there were three things I paid attention to besides taking my clothes off before I stepped on the scale.
    1) I was eating something I shouldn’t be eating. (In my case it was too much popcorn, pizza, beer, cookies, etc.)
    2) I was not eating something I should have been eating. (In my case it was not enough olive oil, coconut oil, sweet potatoes, etc.)
    3) I was eating too often during the day. (In my case it was eating popcorn 24×7 just for something to do so I went on intermittent fasting.)

It took a few years to figure all that out, but I no longer bother stepping on the scale with or without clothes.

    1. A good recipe for success, Frank. It’s good that we can still figure things out and change our habits, even if we do it slowly.

    1. You’re not far wrong, Judy :-) But I won’t make a habit of it. He and I have agreed on an ideal weight for me, and it remains in the future.

  5. Congratulations on your successful annual check-up, Dan!

I love the adorable bunnies and the photo of the bunny among the beautiful pumpkins, pondering and envisioning them cut open so they can enjoy the fruits of “their” labors!!

My favorite photos (I could not pick a single one, of course) are the sunrise images. The play of light is just right in each photo. That ground-level shot of grass is superb! As is the rising sun in the mist and between the tree.
Loved the view of the trees and the great artistry in the sky with their leaves now shed.
The oak tree’s colors are wonderful. I like the angle of your photo.

Thank you, Dan, along with Marsha and Deb, for hosting the commemorative for Cee. Happy Birthday to you and Marsha in advance.

I hope you have a wonderful day!

    1. Thanks Suzette. My previous doctor had a wry sense of humor. Once, when she suggested I get a tetanus vaccine booster, I complained that I still had a year to go (they’re good for 10). She said, “Have you ever known anyone that had tetanus?” I said no. She said, “That’s because they’re dead. There’s no cure.” She was effective.

I’ll be walking at sunrise again, as winter draws near, but the leaves will be gone and the grass dormant. These past few weeks have been favorites.

We are giving the squirrels their pumpkins, along with some “store-bought” sugar pumpkins. Like any good gardener, they prefer the ones they grew.

Thanks for the birthday wishes. I hope you can join us on Friday, and I hope you have a great rest of the week.

      1. Winter walks are so refreshing. I am looking forward to them; however, I must admit that autumn days/mornings are my favorite!

I will be beyond happy to join in on Friday!

Thank you, Dan. And have a great rest of the week. Cheers.

  6. The worst part of going to the dr is that evil scale. But that chubby little bun is cute with a few extra pounds. No fair!

    1. I hate that scale. Ms Bun says “it’s mostly fur, and the camera adds a few pounds.”

  7. Those doctor scales are a killer. It doesn’t matter what doctor I visit, there is no agreement. Even on the same day in two offices they don’t agree. The one that shows the heaviest is, of course, in the office of the doctor most concerned about weight.

    1. I don’t trust this one, John, and I despise its annoying accuracy down to the tenth of a pound. At least I was under the wire.

  8. Great one-liner, but your doctor needs to get real about calculating your weight. Congratulations on achieving your goal. That accomplishment didn’t come easy. 🤙

The sun lighting up the grass is a fantastic shot! The flag at the senior housing complex looks like she’s hugging the pole for warmth.

The pumpkin harvest this year is awesome. A grand feast will be had by all who come to the Antion’s Buffet. Love the bunny nibbling on hor’ dourves before the main meal is served.

Definitely a young bull posing as a leaf!

    Have a great day.

    1. Thanks Ginger. I was hoping for horns to blow and balloons to fall from the ceiling, but I guess 4 ounces isn’t all that big a deal for them. Still, add in the weight of my clothes and I think it was pretty good.

The squirrels love the pumpkins they grow. The store-bought ones we put out end up with the seeds eaten and the insides nibbled on. They ones they grow (which are darker orange and softer inside) are eaten down to the skin.

I love walking as the sun rises. Pretty soon, I’ll be out there again, but it will be colder.

I hope you have a great ride on the downhill slide of this week.

  9. Oh, that darn scale! I always took my shoes off (God knows how much they weigh!) before I got on the scale. One time a new nurse in my doctor’s office said, “Keep the shoes on.” I thought, ‘you’re new here, lady. I’m not.’ I took my shoes off anyway. We don’t need to be adding unnecessary poundage. That’s what chocolate is for!

The squirrel on your porch with his garden bounty is so cute. He looks about as round as those pumpkins! 🎃

    1. I’m glad you stood up to the nurse. Who knows how much those shoes weigh. My shoes are laced, so taking them off would be too much of a delay.

The squirrels love the pumpkins they grew. We cut them in quarters, and they munch them like crazy. My wife took some pictures and a short video. I need to remember to share them on Saturday.

  10. I always take off my shoes before getting weighed at the Doctor’s office. Sometimes it helps…a wee bit. I laughed out loud when you said, ” don’t ask what I ate to celebrate after the visit.” 😂

  12. My husband always puts his keys, and anything else not attached to or covering his body, aside before getting in the doctor’s scale. Many, many years ago, I worked at a Sharper Image store demonstrating exercise equipment. We had a scale that would announce your weight, something I thought would be useful for people who couldn’t see well, etc. It didn’t do well, though, because women in particular didn’t want anyone else hearing the number. 😉

    1. I can imagine that not being a big selling item.

I put everything I could in my jacket pockets and placed it on a table before stepping on the scale.

Congrats on making your weight goal, Dan! I did my annual physical last week and closed my eyes when I got on that hall scale. I hate we can’t take our shoes off. Goregous photos, the sunrise so beautiful.

  14. Dan, the idea of the squirrels wanting their pumpkins sliced made me chuckle. All the photos are delightful. “Please don’t ask me what I ate to celebrate.” Okay, and I won’t ask you what clothing you removed before stepping on the scales either. ;) Pro tip: shoes are usually the heaviest, and the least embarrassing to remove in public. Just make sure your socks are clean and free of holes. :D Hugs.

  15. I solved that Doctor vs Weight Dilemma- my GP is a few pounds overweight herself! Therefore, we only discuss weight if I want to- and losing weight is not her cure all for anything that ails ya! hehehe

I really dislike this time change. I will never get used to it.

Every doctor I visit has a different way of determining my weight. Some subtract for clothes, some don’t. Some don’t even weigh me they just ask me how much I weigh. I’m glad you made it under the wire. (K)
