Happy Saturday. It’s good to be back at the bar. I’m a bit late, but I’m sure David will let me pick up the tab. The patio is closed now, so there are a few more people in the bar. We have some catching up to do, and we’ll have a go at Linda’s Stream of Consciousness Saturday prompt:

SoCS by Linda G. Hill

I think we will enjoy.

“You’re late!”

“Hello, David. Yes, I’m late, albeit only a few minutes.”

“I thought you were going to skip out on me again.”

“I didn’t ‘skip out’ on you, I went out for the day with our daughter.”

“Well, the result was the same.”

“Look, I’m sorry you had to drink alone.”

“Don’t be sorry, Dan — he didn’t show.”

“Hi Curley. David left you hanging?”

“He did. However, he did order this John Howell’s Special. I put it on your tab along with this cold glass of Modelo.”

“Thanks Curley.”

“Cheers, Dan.”

“Cheers? I thought you might offer an apology.”

“Apology, after what you put me through?”

“You stayed home, what exactly did I put you through?”

“My wife had her book club over.”

“Oh? What are they reading?”

“Labels on wine bottles, as far as I could tell.”

“I take it you didn’t join them, how bad could that have been?”

“They were in the Family Room. The room with the big TV. I ended up watching college football in the bedroom.”

“That couldn’t have been too bad.”

“I was in bed. I fell asleep and I missed that big play in the last seventeen seconds. Anyway, where did you go?”

“We went to the Peabody Museum and then…”

“Stop. Don’t tell me. You had dinner at Pepe’s didn’t you?”

“We did!”

“Did you have to wait in line to get it?”

“Yeah, but only for about half an hour.”

“What kind of pizza did you get?”

“My daughter had a small vegetarian deal, olives, mushrooms and stuff. I had a small with onions, mushrooms and sausage.”

“You guys ordering a pizza?”

“No, Curley. Dan is telling me about his dinner at Pepe’s last week.”

“I love that place. Our pizza is good, but it can’t compete with theirs.”

“Still, if David’s hungry for a slice, we can order one.”

“I see him nodding, Dan. I’ll have them pop a meat lover’s into the oven.”

“Was there anything special at the museum, Dan?”

“No, but I had never been. Faith went there on a school field trip when she was a kid. We both love museums.”

“So, why were you late today?”

“I had to sign for a package.”

“Something special? Something expensive?”

“Nope, an AC adapter for my new laptop.”

“Didn’t it come with an adapter?”

“It did, but I like having a second one.”

“Why?”

“I sometimes take it into the kitchen to work for a long time, longer than the battery goes. And I use the second one when I travel.”

“What’s wrong with the first one?”

“Nothing, but the cord goes through a slot in my desk and then behind the leg. It’s a pain to disconnect and move.”

“I can see that. Who’d you buy it from?”

“Lemovo.”

“Whoa. I thought you said it wasn’t expensive. I would have guessed Amazon.”

“It was on sale at Lenovo for twenty percent less than Amazon, and they offered free shipping.”

“I wouldn’t have expected either of those things from Lenovo.”

“I could have paid for shipping if I wanted it a day earlier, but the shipping would have been more than the cost of the adapter.”

“Still, you would have been here on time.”

“Not exactly, but I would have had a hole in my budget about the size of a John Howell’s Special and a meat lover’s pizza.”

“Point taken. I hate those ‘pay to get it earlier’ offers. The free shipping usually arrives ahead of schedule anyway.”

“True in this case. This was supposed to come Tuesday. The paid shipping was for Monday, but I got the alert that it was out for delivery today.”

“That makes me feel better.”

“What? Why?”

“You didn’t plan to have your shipping interfere with our Saturday festivities.”

“I wouldn’t do that to you two weeks in a row, David.”

  2. I didn’t realize Smokey was so dark in colour. I also have two adaptors. One at the office and one at home.

    1. The black squirrels vary in how dark they are. Some are a dark gray. Some have bits of brown.

When I was working, we always bought employees an extra adapter so they didn’t have to disconnect things in the office.

Smokey has you well trained now. No more one at a time 😂

    1. It was a great day, Brian. The critters around here all have us well trained. We put the cut there when we’re working in the yard, so it’s handy. Some take that to me it’s self-service. Not all the squirrels can carry two peanuts.

      Liked by 1 person

      1. They don’t do the stuff peanuts in their cheek pouch? or don’t Squirrels have them 🤔

        Liked by 1 person

        1. I guess they don’t have them, or they aren’t that big. Mostly, they carry one off at a time. We’ve joked that we should get them little shopping carts.

  6. “Labels on wine bottles” did it for me. David and Dan are such a matched set! Your autumn photos are beautiful, especially that featured photo at the top. Your dad-daughter time sounded great — good pizza and a museum? Good memories!

    1. We had a great time, Maureen. Time is a very special gift. Even standing in line for a pizza was time well spent. I’m running out of autumn. It’s 19 degrees here as I’m about to begin my walk.

  7. David sounds like he missed you last week, Dan. His protests seemed sincere, albeit he was at home chillin’ in your absence.

I love the photo of the backlit leaf, superb! The remaining resilience of the trees still with leaves is inspiring. Nature can and does not always give way easily even to the expected changes in the seasons.

The feature photo of the sunrise (?) is gorgeous! I love the shadows and bits of sunlight adding extra drama to the sky, which I always enjoy.

The critters are adorable, but I always say that… I loved Smokey’s posture when seeking his peanut offering and his delight scampering off with his found prizes, tucked in.

Sammy on the fence is a great photo, I love his curled tail and focus on eating. All the critters look so relaxed in your yard, Dan. You do a great job tending to them. *Mr. Crow in flight… is my favorite photo… superb scene captured.

Thanks as always for the great photos!
I hope you have a wonderful weekend, Dan. Cheers.

    1. Thanks so much for the visit and comment, Suzette. I’m glad you enjoyed this post. The critters are comfortable around here, but they remind us that they come for the food. They’ve lost so much habitat, and natural food sources. On our street alone, I think they lost a dozen oak trees — that’s a lot of acorns.

The crow in flight is a favorite of mine. I almost never get a photo like that. I was lucky with this one. I love seeing his wings spread like that.

The feature photo was at sunset, but it’s hard to tell. I only know because I recognize the property and know I was facing west.

I hope you have a wonderful weekend. We’re starting off cold, but it will warm up enough to be comfortable working outside.

      Liked by 1 person

      1. Thank you for doing more than your part to enrich the habitat on your street for the critters, Dan. My guess is they come for the food; but stay to say thank you (just my imagination, of course).
It is always a pleasure to stop by for a visit at your blog.
The weather here is about the same…a cool morning and “warming” up as the day’s moods swing.

I appreciate the weekend best wishes and same to you Dan. Cheers.

  8. We have 4 burning bushes and they always put on great fall show.
Not as cute as a blurry bunny or Smokey of course…

    1. We should have three burning bushes out there. When we first planted them, that blurry bunny ate one down to nubs. Still, we find it impossible to stay mad.

  9. They make mighty fine pizza. I’ve eaten it a couple of times and sure wish he’d come a little further north so I could eat it on a regular basis. :-) I love burning bush this time of year. We had several in the Midwest, but they are considered invasive in NH so can’t buy them here.

    1. I was surprised to learn that Pepe’s has expanded as much as it has. We’re purists (I guess) we drive past a few that are closer to get to the one in New Haven.

We have a couple larger burning bushes that have been here for over 30 years. We were able to buy a few to fill in along the property line several years ago. The bunnies ate one before I realized I needed to put some fence around them. I think these are large enough that the bunnies can’t do much damage.

  10. Pizza is a magic food group — same item can be entirely different experiences depending on the chef. I’m with you on the second adaptor. The backup makes sense in general but if I’m required to crawl under and around furniture to free the one at home? Nope, I’m buying one to keep with my travel gear.

    Liked by 1 person

    1. We get good pizza from several places around here, but Pepe’s is the best. When I was supplying people with laptops (before I retired) we always bought them two adapters so they had one to travel with. I wish they were more universal, but I’m no longer outfitting a crowd,

      1. The revolving door of charge cord needs is an annoying one. My son showed up here yesterday asking if I had (cannot for the life of me remember the specifics) and I was no help. He pawed through his old nightstand and came up victorious. Gotta love when you can put your hands on what you need.

        1. It can get frustrating. I’m glad to see a bit of a universal standard emerging. Maybe in a year or two.

  11. That pizza looks delicious! Seeing a picture makes me understand the lines out the door. It is always that busy?

Are you putting out containers of peanuts for Smokey now? Kind of a help yourself peanut bar. He looks so polite. Our squirrels forage around the yard and scurry up the trees soon as I make an appearance. I’m friendly, little guys!

You computer guys are funny. I told my husband about you buying a second A/C adaptor from Lenovo. A brand he likes! And cheaper than Amazon?! He showed me a box he uses (no idea what it does) is Lenovo. He is always comparison shopping for the parts he buys, too. A discount and free shipping? Sold!!

    Have a great weekend, Dan.

    1. There’s always a line at Pepe’s, Lois, but it’s worth the wait.

My wife takes the container of peanuts out when she’s working in her garden or when she’s putting out the birdseed. When she is ready to come in, she dumps it on the steps. The chipmunks used to climb up and steal a peanut, but most squirrels don’t. Smokey looked over at us as if to ask for a peanut. We told him to help himself, as we were busy putting a tarp up over the A/C compressor. I think this was Smokey’s idea of foraging.

It’s funny. I have a box from HP that I brought home from work. We use it for dead batteries that we take to the town’s recycling center. We’ve used that box for over 10 years. I have some in my shop from back when you had to add network interface cards to desktop computers. I have woodworking odds and ends in them. They’re really good boxes :-)

  12. You and David didn’t miss a beat in your absence last week. Today’s conversation is a hoot.

Burning bush is a beauty. That cup of peanuts cracked me up. I bet those squirrels thought they found the pot of gold at the end of the rainbow!

Museum, pizza, and you and Faith celebrating your birthday. Priceless.

Have a great weekend. Maybe make a couple of shopping carts for the squirrels to carry their peanuts home.

We had a great day last week, Ginger but it was good to be back in the bar. Most of the squirrels don’t go in the cup. My wife takes a few peanuts out and tosses them in the yard. Smokey was being brave.

I hope you have a great weekend.
