Last week we shared some wonderful churches from around the world. If you take a look at the home page for the challenge, you’ll see where we’ve been, where we’re going. As for where we are, this week, we’re looking for ‘Sporting Venues.’ It occurred to me after the post was live to add two photos from NHRA (Drag Racing).

My feature photo is the scoreboard over the football (American College) stadium at West Virginia University in Morgantown, West Virginia. I went to college there, but they didn’t have such a fine stadium then. The photo below is the stadium in which I watched them play. The round section was lovingly referred to as the Wine Bowl.

The photo is from WVU’s history page. I hope my tuition
earned me the right to use it.

Six of Dan's books
The Dreamer’s Alliance and Rascal Todd Mysteries on “display” on the Gateway Clipper.

If any of those look interesting, you can find them all here. PS, they are all also available in audiobook format. I used KDP’s Virtual Voice, but I edited each book in its entirety, and I really like the way they turned out. And, as far as audiobooks go, they are a bargain.

    1. I don’t really go to too many. A few each year, but I’ve been going for years. I had some pictures from NHRA Drag Racing. I just decided to add them after seeing your motorcycle racing photos. Thanks for the reminder.

      1. The drag racing photos are so good Dan. Glad I was an inspiration 😀

  4. These are great pictures. I don’t believe I have a single picture in this category, Dan. I’m not sporty at all.

          1. I do like tennis and both my boys play although I do not. I had undetected bad eyesight as a girl so I was poor at sports. When I got glasses and could see the ball, I was already disillusioned with team sports. I was a great cyclist and taught spinning at the gym in my twenties.

  5. Wow! Awesome photos, Dan.

Superb views in all of them. I love the Carnegie Science Center model train tracks and the Forbes field replica miniature.

The mist over the field after the rain is a brilliant scene, beautifully captured. That would make a lovely sports themed coffeetable book cover, I reckon.

Love the blimp, great photo. They are hard to photograph. The close-up of the bleachers in the park ~ just superb leading line.

I have two favorites: Heinz Field from the riverboat and PNC Park.
*Love the archive photo of the “Wine Bowl” of your college school. I love to see older photos and the scenes they captured.
You spoil us with great examples for lots of inspiration, Dan. Welll done. Thank you!

I hope you have a great day.

    1. I’m glad you like these, Suzette. The photo of the blimp is from a hockey game we decided to attend at the last minute. Our seats were in the very last row, and the blimp never made it up as high as we were.

I’ve never been to WVU’s new football stadium on game day. I looked into buying tickets to take my brother to a game where WVU was playing a team he liked. The cost (in 2024) for crummy tickets and parking would have been more than I paid for a semester’s tuition in 1976. We decided to watch the game in our hotel.

Brian’s post inspired me to add two more photos. Old photos from a racing event in New Jersey.

The picture of PNC Park is from the same night I took the one that ended up on the cover of one of my books. I love taking pictures from the riverboat.

I hope you have a great week.

      1. The cost of tickets at some venues is astronomical, you are right, Dan. Watching from the comfort of home or a hotel is a perfect alternative on occasion!

I love the images of speed you captured in the two photos you added of the NHRA. The idea of speed is so hard to capture. I love these, Dan. Well done.

Thanks for the best wishes for the week. Cheers.

        1. I was stunned when I tried to buy tickets to that game, Suzette. I had already told my brother I’d get them. When I called him back, he understood fully.

NHRA is the fastest sport on the planet. I have lots of shots where the car is blurred, but that one came out well. I’m glad you like it.

          Liked by 1 person

          1. I did not know that NHRA was that fast sport on the planet, wowza! In that case, the clear image of the car you captured at the track is a superb shot! Kudos!

            Thanks, Dan.

  6. Great photos of the many stadiums you have been in. You are well-acquainted with bleachers! I like the Iced Coffee and Hot Coffee mascots!

It must have felt weird to be so close to that blimp.

I have no doubt you consumed many hot dogs and beer in these venues!

Hope you have a great week.

    1. Bleachers and stadium seats, Ginger – they almost require a beer to get comfortable. I don’t go to a lot of sporting events, but I’ve collected a lot of photos from the ones we attended.

My understanding is that there’s no calories in food consumed when rooting for your team.

The mascot races are fun to watch. In Pittsburgh, at PNC Park, they have a pierogi race. How they get people to put on a heavy costume and run around the outfield is beyond me.

  8. The last two photos, especially, are wonderful! You can feel the speed in that 300mph photo, and who doesn’t like flames??!!

Stadiums are pretty cool already, but the ‘good night’ photos are really pretty.

    Liked by 1 person

    1. At those races, I had to choose between starting line flames or an attempt to capture the cars at speed. I guess good photographers can do both, but I never could.

Those goodbye photos are my favorites, Lois. The game is over and we’re taking a riverboat back to our car. For my money, it doesn’t get any better.

    Liked by 1 person

    1. Not the pros, but the views of the soccer fields are in our local park. maybe a hundred fans (mostly parents) for those games. Dunkin Park is a small stadium, about 6,000 seats, but they put on a good show, and feature a lot of local youth groups for pregame entertainment.

  12. Fantastic pix, Dan! Minor League games are a real thrill. We enjoy going with our teenage grandkids to see the Boulders at Clover Field in Pomona. A fabulous way to spend a summer evening. ⚾️

    1. The minor league teams go to great lengths to make the event fun. They are reasonably priced, and I love the way the Yardgoats work to include the community of Hartford. I think they are a wonderful group to have in town.

      1. You’re absolutely right, Dan! It’s a great way to enjoy the thrill and excitement of baseball while spending quality time with family and avoiding the hassle of traveling into the city. We are very fortunate to have minor league teams who do so much for the community and their fans.

  13. I love the flames coming out of the race car and the images of the ballparks.

    Liked by 1 person

    1. Those cars are already moving fast. I would try to get one good picture of the flames and then focus (no pun intended) on trying to get one at speed near the top end of the track. Most of those were crummy. We enjoy two or three ballgames a year. It’s always a fun outing.

      1. I always trying panning as the race cars go around the track and it’s hit or miss if I get any good shots. I usually only manage to get a handful I like. We love the AAA teams and enjoy several games a years as well. We always have a great time when we go.

        Liked by 1 person

        1. This might be my one successful attempt at panning. Those cars are moving so fast that a clear night shot is a stroke of luck. Minor league ball is so much fun to watch.

    1. Thanks Kerfe. Paul Skenes says he wants to win in Pittsburgh. I hope the owner will let someone pry a few dollars out of his wallet this offseason. A couple of good bats and 3-4 relievers are needed. Oh, and a lights out closer (not that I’m greedy, but we sent ours to the Yankees). I hope the Pens can stay healthy. They could do some damage if they can.

  28. What great collection of sporting venues (I’m especially partial to hockey arenas)! Interesting tidbit about the Yardgoats being affliated with the Rockies-I did not know that. I’ll never forget how impressed I was with the view of Heinz Field from the Duquesne Incline. That’s such a great confluence of rivers.

    1. We always hope for the Rockies to do better so they wouldn’t call up our best players. I believe the RockCats were a Rockies affiliate as well. Still, we love going to see the Yardgoats. The views from the incline and Mt Washington are spectacular.
