Last Saturday, our daughter and I traveled to New Haven (45 mi (72 km)) to visit the Peabody Museum of Natural History, which is part of Yale University. I have a few photos in the gallery from there, and a few more from around my home and Hartford as the seasons begin to change.

During the past week or so, I’ve said and I’ve heard today’s one-liner several times. I think it’s a wonderful expression:

“Let me help you with that.”

Think about when you’ve said.heard that — One-liner Wednesday by Linda G. Hill

Six of Dan's books
The Dreamer’s Alliance and Rascal Todd Mysteries on “display” on the Gateway Clipper.

If any of those look interesting, you can find them all here. PS, they are all also available in audiobook format. I used KDP’s Virtual Voice, but I edited each book in its entirety, and I really like the way they turned out. And, as far as audiobooks go, they are a bargain.

  1. Looks great Dan and love the view across the river. Lovely to see you and your daughter doing so many fun things together.

    1. I had never been to this particular museum, Wayne. I enjoyed walking through and studying the exhibits. The views across the river remind me that winter is on its way.

  2. For me it’s usually at the grocery store when I say that. When I see someone so much smaller than they can reach the top shelf of some aisle and I happen to be there at the same time. I see they’re really reaching and on their tippy toes and of course I ask if I can help them with that. Most the time people are sheepish and defer to my height which I found out this year has shrunk a whole inch and three quarters since my last physical!!!! So they are really small people!
An inch and three quarters! Can I digress just a minute and say how very, very much I HATE AGING!!!! It’s not for wimps or snowflakes. Just sayin! The sad thing is …at this rate it’s just a matter of time before someone taller than me is asking me if they can help me with that item at the very top shelf in the grocery store. I hope Karma is a real thing and does come back to help and not hurt me!

    1. An inch and three quarters? That’s a sizable chunk, Deborah. Maybe it’s the opposite of a growth spurt and not a trend. I thought of these words when I took a cart from a woman who seemed to be struggling with it as she was returning it to the corral. I give her credit for putting it where it belongs, and I was happy to help. I like that the grocery stores are becoming more social again. They got so rigid during Covid. I do help people reach those top-shelf items fairly often. I hope I don’t lose that ability. Aging is not for wimps, that’s for sure. I hope you have a nice week ahead.

  3. Last time I was in a museum with a dinosaur exhibition, I had to go, there were too many screaming running little children. I lasted a good 15 minutes.
I am the same. In the market getting things off high shelves for those of a smaller stature and generally little old ladies. Always get a smile and a thank you.
I also found it was better to get the item from the shelf that hoist her up to get her own. You wouldn’t believe how fast store security gets there.

    1. I had to laugh at the thought of you tossing Granny up to reach the top shelf. There were a lot of children in the museum, but most were well behaved. We wandered around and waited at times, but we were able to study the exhibits in peace.

  4. It is incredible to think that those creatures actually walked our Earth, isn’t it? xx

    1. It is, Jo. Standing next to the skeletons, one can only marvel at their size. But, it’s the smaller creatures that survived (at least so far).

  6. Hi Dan – I look around for some to help … sometimes it’s a while before someone tall enough appears in vision … but I always thank them with a big smile! The museum sounds a great visit – so glad you had that happy time together. Cheers Hilary

  7. Dan, I agree. It’s such a good feeling to get to say those words. Too bad that more people don’t say, and mean, them. You set a great example. Hugs.

  8. Six wonderful words to say and to hear. I’ve been on both ends of this phrase and it’s a good place to be.

The dinosaurs are amazing to see. Hard to imagine that any creature so ginormous could move around. That sweet bunny is quite a size comparison!

Love the way the sunlight lights up those few leaves on that small tree. Beautiful shot.

    Happy Hump Day.

    1. Thanks Ginger. I find it easy to help, and I am glad that I can. Receiving a helping hand is a very special feeling. I think we become a bit more human at those times.

The bunny runs behind the fence when the neighbor’s dog is out. The dog can’t get in our yard, but…

That little tree was trying so hard to hang onto its few leaves. It made me smile to see it.

I hope you have a great rest of the week.

  11. I wonder if there are skywriters anymore. Those words should be written huge across the sky. Thanks for reminding us of good people doing good things. I love that tiny tree and the city reflections. As for the dinosaurs, being one myself, I can say I know just how they feel!

    1. You made me laugh, Maureen. I think you’re trying to send coffee up my nose. We should all look for opportunities to say those words. I think the whole “social distancing” aspect of the pandemic was the worst effect. It feels good to talk to people in the store and on the street.

  12. I don’t know which photos I like better, Dan–the dinosaurs or the lovely reflections-especially the crane reflection!

Aren’t those wonderful words to both say and hear? It aggravates me when you see someone who is clearly struggling, and people look and walk by. Why, people?? Why? Helping and being helped–it’s a beautiful world.

    1. The crane photo is my favorite, Lois. I didn’t even notice it on the way into the park, but the sun was in just the right place on the way out.

I remember once when I was returning to work from lunch. Across a little courtyard, I saw a woman with a baby carriage trying to negotiate the double door entrance to our building. There were people sitting in the courtyard and two high school age boys just standing next to the doors. I yelled over, “Get the door for her!” Everyone looked like they were in shock, like I was a crazy person. One of the boys did get the doors.

      1. They were right there yet you had to tell them!!! Oh, the aggravation of it all. But good for you for telling–and yelling–at them anyway.

That crane photo is a beauty, Dan!

  16. Love the dino skeletons, so many sizes and shapes they had back then. Cute little bunny, too. Maybe it is warm air blowing from the compressor is why he gets back there sometimes. :)

  17. A nice thing to say or hear. Love dinosaurs! My fave tree in front of hospital has finally lost most of its leaves darn it😌

    1. We had three heavily windy days. They took care of most of the leaves. I like seeing the dinosaurs. The words are always good to hear, and they feel surprisingly good when we can say them.

  19. It was fun to see the picture of the bunny hanging out in your AC area. We have found bunnies on several occasions residing in the same general area of our outdoors. The Peabody looks like a fun visit…a great place to “bone up” on history.😊

    1. Ha!. The bunny goes through there to get home (under our porch) and when the neighbor’s dog is out and barking. I had never been to the Peabody Museum before, we had a great time.

  20. Thank you Dan, for this reflective gallery. You captured many great shadows, lines (cranes), and reflections (Connecticut River view to downtown and the Colt Dome).

My absolute favorite photo is that of the persistent tree with a few leaves gleaming in streams of sunlight. Great capture!

Love the bunny chillin’ (pun intended) behind the A/C. There does not seem to be grass to eat there, so it must just love that space for some other reason, I am guessing.

Love the dinosaurs at the museum and the great shadows you captured. I like the shadows of the Stegosaurus.

Thanks, Dan, for the lovely tour of the Peabody Museum.
    Cheers.

    1. I’m glad you enjoyed this post, Suzette. That little tree is trying hard to stay in autumn, but winter is coming.

It’s always good to see the bunny hanging out. I think it was on its way home. Our porch is about five feet away.

The dinosaur skeletons are fascinating to look at. To imagine them walking around is amazing.

The bunny ‘chillin’ made me smile.
