This page is a list of “rules” ( I really don’t like the word, but I guess every challenge needs to have rules. I hope you find these accommodating of both readers and participants.
As many of you know, I took over the stewardship of Thursday Doors from Norm Frampton in December 2020. I’ve made a few changes over time, so I thought it would be good to share the things to remember about participating — yes, I like that much better than “rules.”
- Your doors are shared in a post on your blog. Most participants are on WordPress, but people on Blogger and other platforms are welcome.
- You can leave the link to your Thursday Doors post in a comment to my post for the week, or (if your blog is on WordPress) you can include pingback in your post. I think comments are easier for others to read, but it’s up to you.
- You can link to your post any time between 12:01 am Thursday and noon Saturday (both north American eastern time). Of course, you can post at any time — it’s the link that has to be established between those hours. We often have posts from regions where Thursday come much earlier, and we have posts from people who post on a schedule of days that don’t include Thursday.
- If you want to schedule your post before Thursday, you can always add the link to the comment section later.
- In recognition of the fact that there are many challenges, posts can be linked to Thursday Doors as well as other challenges — as long as you have a door in there somewhere.
- Thursday Doors is a place to relax; a sanctuary of doors, architecture, art and history. Government buildings are welcome — political messages are not. Churches, synagogues, mosques, and temples are welcome — proselytizing is not. History is welcome — revisionist history is not. Humor is welcome as long as it is not at the expense of any person or group. Note: this only applies to the post linked to Thursday Doors. I am not trying to influence or control the layout and design of your blog or any of your other posts.
- Anyone can post any and every week. There is no membership, no commitment and no upper or lower limit on the number of doors in your post.
- You can post anything that falls in the broad description of “Door.” The only hard rule is that you have permission to share that door. You can use your own photos, photos given to you and photos downloaded from free-to-use sources. You can draw a door, describe a door in poetry or music, and you can generate a door using AI. At the time these rules were last updated, you can use screenshots of doors from Google Maps. It is your responsibility to acknowledge the image source if necessary.
- “Door” can refer to a door, a doorway, a portal, a gate, an opening, the suggestion of a passageway, a “Ghost Door” (a door that has been sealed). We have also had pictures of inspiring architecture where, “there must be a door in there somewhere” has been added.
- If you place a link to your doors in the comments, or if you include a pingback, your post will automagically be included in the Sunday Recap in which all doors posts are listed in an easy to use table. If you don’t do the link/pingback, I may still include your link, if I follow your blog and, if you include a hint in the title. A little more about the recap is below:
- As part of the automatic process, it’s necessary to remove ‘:’ characters from your title.
- Unless it’s necessary, I remove the phrase “Thursday Doors” from your title. It’s important on your post, but not in the recap.
- Links to my home page (NoFacilities.com), or the Category of Thursday Doors, will not be seen by people visiting my site and will not be automatically included in the recap. You have to link to my post for the current week.
- The order of posts in the Recap is the order the appear in the comment section on Thursday, except for the ones I add in manually, which have to go at the end of the list.
- I adhere to Norm’s practice of not providing bail to any Thursday Doors photographer. Please respect people’s property and obey No Trespassing signs.
- If you share your doors on social media, you are encouraged to use the hashtag #ThursdayDoors.
The guidelines above apply to people who want to share their posts on Thursday Doors.
